Codemaster hints at DiRT 4

Will buy. Dirt is my favorite racing series. Grid 2 was pretty awesome as well (though I ran into a technical issue that caused me to not be able to play it for over a month)

Would really like to believe that the game would be good but that's asking a lot at the moment. Codemasters used to produce some fantastic games in different genres then but then started struggling with good games everywhere so decided to stop everything but racers so they could concentrate on what they knew. Since then they've got even worse for me.

I may be wrong and hopefully they'll turn things around with this but they've become such a middle of the road studio that they'll have to do something really special to convince me this time.

I know there's a lot at stake for them at the moment but I'd rather they took risks than just played it safe and ended up producing yet another game which is sort of pretty but was as average as you can get in every other way.

Please sir, less Extreme Sports parody and more formal (doesn't have to be occasionally stuffy like the real deal, however) stylings.

Thanks Santa

P.S. We all miss TOCA. *cough* Micro Machines downloadable title?

Oh man, I really REALLY hope it's going to be more like Dirt 1 again. I really didn't like the X-Games vibe introduced in Dirt 2, the Gymkhana bs I flatout hated and the extremely short rally stages in Dirt 3 were disappointing.

Focus on Rallysport again please!

Also, less talky menus would be nice.

Considering how other developers pushed the microtransactions even more, I'm sure Codemasters will do their best to take the crown once again.

"Hey pandejo! Great job! You owned that track dude. Sadly you used every bit of energy you had. Go to the store and buy Monster cans to replenish your energy like a boss or rest for 12 hours"

I hated that dudebro voice and having to waste my time after every race listen to him gouge my ears out. If he has to be in the next game, I hope can shut him up.

The more like DiRT 1 and/or Rallisport Challenge 2 DiRT 4 is, the better.

I'm not worried.

I am, after dirt 3 being so called 60% rally it turned out to be what felt like 30-40 and a rather limited selection of locations, one being a dlc where the actual menu art and files were already on disc (cut content for sure) and well, gymkana can go stay with showdown titles.

No other company has managed to destroy their credibility as Codemasters did during the PS3/XBiox 360 area. I bought the 3 Dirt games and each one was worse than the previous one. As such, i don't have any interest in Dirt 4 yet but that can change depending on what Codemasters has planned for their new game.

Things i'd like to see changed:
- faster menus. The primary function of menus is not to look nice/be nicely designed but to navigate the player to the actual gameplay in the fastest possible way.
- less DLC whoring. For example, in Dirt 3, the DLC cars were right in between the normal car selection screens... Focus on releasing a good game first (without any DLC reference) and think about DLC after the game is out.
- Make the visuals more realistic. Get rid of that piss filter/instagram look or tone it down (pretty sure they are never going to do that though)
- offer pure rally and get rid of that dudebro facebook/youtube/cool kids attitude that plagued Dirt 2 and 3. I'm not interested in Gymkhana (or whatever it's called) and other non-rally disciplines

That being said, i look forward to the reveal. I hope it's going to be on next gen consoles. It's going to be interesting to see what Codemasters can do graphics wise on next generation. Should be beautiful at least. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Codemasters will have learnt from the past and is willing to listen to feedback.

Yes!! Would love a new Dirt game. Hopefully the new one is a bit more like Dirt 1&2. Didn't mind 3 but it wasn't their strongest effort

I loved the first dirt, when it was rally racing. As they shifted focus to the xgames bullshit I lost interest.

sad, nothing was more intense than driving cockpit view down some narrow dirt roads in a forest as fast as possible.

What gives you that idea? code masters has their own teams.

Just putting two and two together.

The other day Sumo said they're working on a new entry for a big racing franchise, I'd qualify the Dirt series as one of those, they've worked with Codemasters before on F1, Dirt and Race Driver. Maybe both are working on it?

Sumo Dirt 4 for PS3/360

Codemasters focused on PC / Next gen

Also I seem to recall reading or hearing that Milestone/Black Bean's involvement with the WRC license just happened to expire last year... I think this could be a very exciting reveal (if and when we actually get it!).

Bigben acquired the WRC license for three years last year:

Bigben Interactive announces their acquisition of the FIA World Rally Championship license from WRC Promoter GmbH relating to publishing and worldwide distribution rights for the WRC video game.

WRC: Authentic and extreme motorsport, high performance cars, the world's best drivers, dramatic surroundings

Created in 1973, the World Rally Championship is the FIA's premium rally series. It currently consists of 13 rallies from around the world, each with up to 25 competitive stages. Rallies take place on different surfaces - gravel, asphalt, snow and ice. The WRC showcases authentic motorsport in the form of high performance cars and the world's best drivers competing in dramatic surroundings. It features automotive manufacturers including Citroën and Volkswagen.

With over 3.5 million spectators at events in 2012, and more than a billion television viewers (combined audience) watching in 125 countries, the WRC is one of the biggest motoring competitions in the world. Next step is Neste Oil Rally Finland, from 31 July to 3 August.

The WRC video games: Over 7 million copies sold since 2002

Bigben Interactive's acquisition of the WRC license represents an exceptional opportunity to add a flagship video game to their catalog: over seven million copies have been sold since 2002. 95% of sales are in Europe, and 50% in France, Germany and Benelux, territories where Bigben Interactive has a strong position for distribution of video games and video game console accessories.

WRC 4 is the first game to be released under this new license agreement, and will be developed by Milestone, creator of the last three versions of the game. Available at retail and for download on PlayStation®3, PlayStation®Vita, Xbox 360® and Windows PC®, the game will be launched in two phases:

August: Presentation to trade and public at Gamescom in Germany (from 21 to 25 August), alongside the ADAC Rallye Deutschland;
October: Launch of the game and WRC activities at Paris Games Week, a video game exhibition to be held in Paris from 30 October to 3 November.

"We are extremely happy to have acquired this license. Having already successfully proven our capacities as a distributor with the WRC 3 video game in France and Benelux in 2012, we now find ourselves in the driving seat to publish and distribute the next three versions of the game worldwide. Whilst this agreement allows us to add to our catalog with an extremely popular video game, it also represents recognition from our peers for our know-how and leading position in Europe." Alain Falc, Chief Executive Officer of Bigben Interactive.

I hope to god they've dumped Milestone for WRC 5, maybe Sumo are working on WRC 5? banderas.gif

That twit from touring racer Matt Neal provides an evidence that Codemasters are working on GRID 3 as well:

Less "DiRT2/3" more "colin mcrae/DiRT1" please.

Huge focus on rally. Get rid of gymkhana, buggies and all that shit, No office chair handling, fast menu's and loading (no more stupid flashy menu's that take 8 minutes to load) just make it good, immediate rally fun. Just you and the road.

Can't wait for codemaster to show this off. You all will be in for a big surprise.

Is it going to be a good surprise?

I loved both DiRT 1 & 2, but 3 left me disappointed. I wanted more rally and less everything else. If DiRT4 is a pure rally game and none of that gymkata nonsense, then I'n very interested. If they want to do gymkata make it a separate game, but focus the DiRT games on rally racing please.

I'm tepidly interested, but cautious as well.

The Dirt series went downhill after the first one. They should go back to basic and give us a rally game with pure rally, or at least a championship mode.

Have they used Neal before? Is the BTCC returning? This years championship is shaping up to be a cracker with all the returning champions, please Codies, dial down on the arcade crap and give us a fully featured BTCC mode banderas.gif

trucks? RACE DRIVER 4 DO IT CODIES

Race driver 3 was the PGR before PGR, so fun online and being able to stall your car in the sand and all that, felt like a real touring racer and had truck racing in it too.

Driving aston martins on ice due to a glitch was fun too.

Surprise! Dirt 4 will be entirely Gymkhana-focused and in addition, Ken Block will explain the menu to you for five minutes everytime you start up the game (non-skippable).

Showdown 2: DiRT harder
They will, however, honor the series' heritage by showing pictures of actual Rally racing during the loading screens. Incidentally, that will still mean more Rally content in Dirt 4 because those loading screens take longer than the rally stages in Dirt 3.

:p

That reminds me, is Dirt 3 worth picking up for cheap? I haven't played a rally game since the Colin McCrae series.

WRC 4 came on STRONG at the end of last gen to be the best rally game of the gen.

I hope Dirt 4 goes that direction.

I played most of it (no DLC, only a little bit of Gymkhana because it sucks) and it's not terrible. The rally content is just very limited. Most stages (of whom there are not that many) are about 1 minute long, some even shorter. And some of them even overlap in certain sections. When the DLC whoring started and already completed events showed as uncompleted in the menu because they threw the DLC tracks into the middle of the career, I immediately sold the game.

When I needed more Dirt in my life last year, I chose to buy Dirt 1 again and I'm loving it (again). So I'd say go buy Dirt 1. It's the better game, especially the better rally game and it still looks gorgeous.

It's too bad Milestone didn't recreate real special stages, also all cars have identical interiors. Otherwise it's a great game.

I just want real consequences for crashing again. Only limited time to repair your vehicle and not having rewinds made it a lot more tense and fun.

Agreed. I really loved the repair aspect in Dirt 1 where I had to decide which parts to repair, whether cleaning the car beforehand would be worth it etc. I was hoping they would expand that stuff but nope, X-games happened.

And dito to the comment about the rewind function as well. That feature has destroyed racing games in my opinion because it became an inner struggle not to use the feature after even the slightest mistake. It also led to races feel disjointed and undynamic. I turn it off whenever I can so if they have to include it, just give me a mode where rewinding is not possible so I don't get tempted even.

I just really, really hope they don't ditch cockpit view like they did with Grid 2. If they do I'm going to leave quite a sever number of sternly worded posts on GAF expressing my displeasure.

That's right Codemasters, tread lightly.

Hi all,

Lee from Codemasters here, finally got my account activated so I'm able to chip in.

Sorry for teasing you all like that back at the start of the year, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. :p

I've asked this question quite a lot over the last year in various places but not been able to ask you. So here it goes...

What 5 things are most important for you when it comes to the next DiRT?
