Codemaster hints at DiRT 4

Hi all,

Lee from Codemasters here, finally got my account activated so I'm able to chip in.

Sorry for teasing you all like that back at the start of the year, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. :p

I've asked this question quite a lot over the last year in various places but not been able to ask you. So here it goes...

What 5 things are most important for you when it comes to the next DiRT?

1) 100% rally
2) authentic stages (long, narrow, challenging)
3) damage carry over, teams, rally rules and strategies
4) weather and night (real time transitions would be nice too)
5) variety of locales

in other wrds, much more CMR than dirt

are we seeing this at e3 finally?

Lee, ignore BruiserBear and stick with 30fps locked instead please! I'd love crazy vista's, wide open massive tracks, great visuals and effects, full soft body physics damage modelling and so on. 60fps is not necessary for your game, and 30fps is sufficient.

I really can't believe people would rather have 30fps and slightly better graphics over 60, I'll never understand it from a gamers perspective.

Welcome to GAF! :)

Here are my 5 wishes:

1. Proper rallye game with long stages. No more Gymkhana/X-Games or other stuff.
2. No more Ken Block. Or other dudes in the menu. PLEASE!
3. Dynamic weather with snow, rain and a lot of different road surface types that change according to the weather.
4. Cockpit view :)
5. Awesome bonus cars like CMR's old Escort MKII and the Group B Audi Quattro!

So basically all I want is CMR 2.0 reloaded. I'm already hyped, please make it good. Will preorder day -1!

As much as I would love a Richard Burns Rally type of game, I don't think that's what we are getting. I understand that the target needs to be broad and am expecting at least some type of 'fun' Ken Block modes.

However, if you must include those things, don't let them be the theme of the game. Have pure rally as the main focus and keep the rest of the stuff as some sort of side games.

Words like 'radical', 'awesome' and 'dude' should not be uttered in the game lol.
If your going to have a story mode or a mechanic guide or something, let it be serious.
I loved the mechanic guy in the old Toca. He was old school!

yes! I don't think 3 is as important to me, although it would be great to have, but the other ones would be awesome

All of you requesting a rally only game are just setting yourselves up for dissapointment. There aren't enough pure rally fans to support such a game. They've got to make it more broad than that.

I have to disagree with this statement. Most Dirt 3 players I know did not care much for the gymkata stuff, and a lot of them strongly disliked it. I'm one of them. I like rally games, if I wanted a gymkata game I'd buy that. Actually I don't think there are any pure gymkata games, that fact alone can probably tell you just how much demand there is for it.

Lee, I'm going to be honest with you, totally honest because you seem like a nice guy and whatnot, but if Dirt 4 has gymkata stuff in it then I'm going to be very hesitant to purchase it. Dirt 3 is my least favorite of the series solely due to the lack of rally focus, and I really don't want more of that "variety" in a rally game. It's just not what I'm personally interested in, and I'd probably just rather stick to Dirt 1 & 2 instead which I still play regularly. For comparison I never play Dirt 3 anymore.

The world needs more quality rally games. :(

What makes you think half the frame rate would net you only "slightly" better graphics? We're not talking open ended PC style optimising here, we're talking closed platform. Half the frame rate is going to be able to get you huge graphical improvements or much bigger tracks, draw distances etc, not slight ones.

The one thing I would want to see is a single player campaign but let me skip through all the talking. I just want to get to the next race! even better let me turn off all that story stuff.

I dont mind if its there by default I just have gotten really tired of it in the past few games specially when its not skippable.

Other than that you guys make fine games and have great PC support so I look forward to seeing more in the future.

Yeah basically no gymkhana bollocks.

I can understand them wanting to include it to broaden appeal, but for the love of God tone it down and don't make it the focus.

My main thing is just as long as it's on PC.

Also, a large number of tracks, and maybe some slightly less expensive DLC this time around.

Also, zombie multiplayer was great. Keep it. Driving around the all those buildings and things trying to evade other players had some great intensity.

Gymkhana wasn't awful as some people seem to think, but I do think it should be more optional and show up less in the main campaign. It was still a lot of fun. Just frustrating when I had to run into that and have it keep me from continuing the campaign until I finally beat it, and then the skills I learned from that honestly don't really help me in the rest of the campaign, other than (sort of) drifting, because the cars and tracks are both completely different.

And finally please, get rid of that "cool duuuuude" who is constantly jabbering in your ear. He's annoying af.

Funny thing about this picture that got passed around a lot as a screenshot from "DiRT 4" in the press is it quite clearly has the DiRT 3 logo on the side of the car. - always made me chuckle.

There was another one where I tweeted a pic of the back of the new Subaru WRX STI with just the world "Spoiler" and the press thought that was from the game too!

Doing the social media stuff is a real challenge for DiRT, I want to talk about real world cars and rally and the sport but at the same time I've got to be careful I don't string people along too much.

I hate it when games you love just kind of disappear in-between versions, its like they only pop back up when they want something (you to buy their game) so thats why I try to keep it interesting for the fans and active.

Though I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy teasing so I try to only do it once a week now :p

if i remember correctly, it was in this thread at the codies community forum. not sure if it was flat out confirmed or strongly hinted at though AND i'm having trouble locating it. hopefully i didnt dream it all up.

http://forums.codemasters.com/discussion/203/dirty-gossip-thread

Some good stuff in that thread MastavonBlasta loves pouring over the little details, some things are way off though so don't take any of it as gospel.

I just thought about something i always forget, a driver seat option would be cool. Can't remember if past Dirt games had this. You basically can set the position you take inside cockpit view. If i don't like how much space is taken up by the cars interior and i want to see more of the street... you know what i mean?

I just remembered that I also had my account validation pending :) And here I am :D
So welcome whole Gaf and of course welcome Lee :)

So I will start with my 5 things, that should get DiRT on right tracks:

1. Longer and harder tracks - please try to make longer tracks. Because most of them doesn't even last 3 minutes. I think making some extra challenges with minimum 5 minutes tracks would be great! Of course make it more challenging! The tracks in Dirt games are so easy that's it's almost unbeliveable sometimes :) Bring back the hardcore rallies for real drivers! :)

2. Dynamic weather - I think it's finally time to do dynamic weather on tracks.
I know there was a rain, but I don't recall if it was dynamic or just for the whole race.
Anyway, it would be great to have changing weather in game.

3. Service Area - bring back repairing cars between rallies. I know it was in DiRT games, but it was too simple and just some sliders. It would be great to have ability to see what's damaged and choose what we want to repair and not. I will never forget great service from Colin 2.0. If You could do something like this + some great animations from service area, it would be really great and add some good rally atmosphere.

4. Real locations - in Dirt 3 You tried to bring back some of the real locations, like Finland rally or UK. But it's still not enough. We would love to see more real locations, like Spain, Italy, Sweden (can't rembemer if it was in Dirt3), and etc.

5. Excellent wheel support - Im a PlayStation player, so I'm speaking only from PS view. The configuration for wheel in Dirt 3 was a disaster. It was eather too sensitve or otherwise. It was almost impossible to make a suitable setup. Car was responding really weird. I speak with many people on local forums, and they also have negative feedback on wheel support and setup. I'm using Logitech DFGT, and I hope it will be supported on PS4 too ;)

That's my 5 points. I'm not even speaking of focusing only on rally and realeasing game on next-gen (current-gen already) platforms with faboulous graphics and physics :)

i'm sure the game will have some other modes. rally cross, raid, maybe more. you can have all that and still have a terrific game where everything is enjoyable. for me, this was rallisport 2.

also, the question though is what would you like to see in dirt 4

As long as there is less gymkhana stuff (could still be fun to have in multiplayer), more rally and being able to skip the talking in menus I'm all good.

And keep making good PC versions.

justbiglee, any news about the Dirt 3 GFWL removal?

Really looking forward to Dirt 4 btw. Hope it's more similar to Dirt 2 than 3 though.

I don't really have anything more to say about Dirt 4, all my colleagues here got things covered.

However, I gotta say I love the new Cody openly communicating with their fans. Between Lee here and Loore in the Grid A thread,it's been great to have conversations between the fans and the company.

I agree. It's very refreshing. Can't wait to see how they're using our feedback :)

Well PGR2 halved the framerate of PGR1 and in my opinion didn't look THAT much better, sure the IQ and lighting were improved but I didn't think the extra detail was worth the loss of FPS. 60FPS is a huge deal for racers, It should not be downplayed.

Loved the canyon stages on Dirt 2. =http://youtu.be/GJcW89f_5zs

Elevation changes, open vistas followed by tight corners and flatout straights with uneven surfaces.
I felt like it was replaced with smaller narrow stages and gymkhana challenges. Kinda miss the trailblazers, felt like it was an under appreciated mode

I bought the first DIrt for $2.50 on steam and still haven't played it.

It doesn't feel like a real rally.... On the other hand I just bought WRC4 on ps3 from milestone, and it's kinda bad. Does anyone here enjoy it? The two biggest problems are tracks have repeated segments, ie a segment will be found in stage 1 and then again in stage 3 and then 5. And the stages are so short. Not since rally championship 2000 have we had long 30 minute stages.

Pretty much everyone wants the same thing. More Colin 2!

Long stages, 60 fps, lots of countries, real rallying, damage. Don't tailor to American mainstream audiences! Just make a great rally game.

I only have 2 things to add

Like everyone said PLEASE make it more rally orientated.

and although DIRT 3 had many problems, the car selection was fantastic, PLEASE include even more classic rally cars such as the Lancia 037, Mcrae's Ford Focus and the Peugeot 106 Maxi

The team all read it, I make dam sure they do. Sometimes somebody says something that just strikes a chord with us and really inspires us - Those ones get printed off and put on the wall.

This one is by a guy who posted on our Facebook page called Greg Flinchbaugh in response to the question "What do you love most about rally" and it just sums it up perfectly.

9fZEWlY.jpg

It reads "gravel, the Sound of gravel, the sound of anti lag, the chirp of birds then the chirp of the turbo dump valves, dirt and gravel rooster tails coming around corners SIDEWAYS, all both incar and outside as a spectator."

Now everyday we ask ourselves "What Would Greg Flinchbaugh Do"

That it plays like DiRT 1 and not like 2, 3 or the downloadable game.. much more Sim-like. 60 fps please.

I'd like to see a more dynamic physics based everything : terrain deformation ( mud covering the the paint an even one's windscreen) including cloth ( for like the rope and flags), soft body physics for the cars.

and in car dashboard driving.

and some nice foliage. please no more sprite or alpha based trees.. polygon based
speedtrees ones would be cool.

Some fancy lighting would be tops as well (HBAO)+

Hope this helps.

I have to say Dirt 2 felt great. Adding assists in Dirt 3 just made it feel easier, and getting rid of them just made it harder. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to feel good without also feeling frustarting. Dirt 2 had a great feel and personally the perfect amount of assists by default.

I loved DiRT 3. In my opinion there are only a few things I'd change:

1. Please implement some kind of penalty system for leaderboard times on Rally stages. People cutting the course completely ruined the competitive aspect of the game.

2. More focus on Rally, less Gymkhana.

3. Slightly more solid feel to the cars.

4. Tighter, more technical rally stages.

5. Another open area like Battersea Power Station.

1. Content! Track variety that was in old CMR games and even in first Dirt. Long and harder point to point tracks in lot of locations. Pikes peak! No gymkhana. Many cars from different eras and the car types that were in first Dirt.
2. Weather and time of day selectable before race with any cominations
3. First GRID like visual damage, meaningful mechanical damage and less indestructible stuff in the enviroments. (I liked how I could run over small trees in first Dirt)
4. Service between stages
5. If you people can't do all that then at least give us proper mod support with map editor.

Replace Gymkhana with a destruction derby type mode please Lee and I'll pre-order it right now.
Better still, announce Dirt Showdown 2 please :)

Grid Autosport will have demolition derby, so consider picking that up in June.

Also, the less we use the 'S' word the better... =p

I wonder how successful the game would be if Codies actually based everything on Gaf feedback...

It has disaster written all over it.

Don't listen to us Codies, just make- Dirt 4: Dudebro Gymkhana Awesome Dude!lol*# Edition
