Ugh seriously, my hype has never been killed as dramatically for anything.
I was salivating at the gameplay details, but I just cannot see myself playing a game with designs like that.

I'm interested about the game part of the, well, game, but as far as aesthetics go I think it could be much better... regarding this "american comic" style, it just doesn't seem very well executed to me from what is shown here.

This is probably yet another case where the game looks fine in motion but ugly as sin in stills.

I get where the EBA comparisons were coming from though.

Looks more like Justice League TV show tier art than actual comic book art (not a bad thing). Need to see it in motion.

People need to chill, 3DS screens always look bad and its not like it's a vita. Be happy we are getting a boss new IP from one of the best srpg developers ever instead of a remake. I'm stoked.

The art style looks fine to me. Not my favorite in the world, but it's pretty charming. Furthermore, 3DS screenshots pretty much never do games justice, so I'm fairly confident this will look good when I'm playing it.

Intelligent Systems have never made a bad game.

look it up

confident as shiet

Yep. I love all their games. And with Advance Wars Days of Ruin's composer, I LOVE everything about this game but the art. I will make this grow on me, becuase the game just sounds too good.

honestly most of you brought it on yourselves with the expectation

las thread was full of pictures of mignola art as if you could recreate that in any way on a 3DS. saw this coming

either way, judging a 3DS game on screenshots is futile

Gonna wait to see it in motion. They're going to show it on Treehouse Live tomorrow.

It doesn't look great in these screenshots. If it doesn't look good in motion, but if it plays great, then I'm fine with that.

I link to the stuff for bandwidth purposes. The box is 4MB, I also did the same for the screens being bmp so every bit helps, just trying to be considerate. :)

This whole proposition is bizarre to me. I was expecting a game that "saves" 3DS from loosing momentum, either a core franchise like Metroid or a mass market game like a brand new 2D Mario. I don't understand what Nintendo wants to accomplish with this title.

Game itself: Interested in how it plays, dislike the artstyle. Cel shaded is a plus.

Smash Bros. and Hoenn Pokemon remakes are already towing the line. I don't really see how whatever they could have possibly announced tonight (Metroid, Majora's Mask) would "save" the 3DS.

- Everyone complains about art
- Game bombs
- Nintendo why don't you make new IPs
- Oh my god this Zelda art looks amazing
- Nintendo why don't you make new IPs
- Oh wow this Kirby art is amazing

This game would probably be better if it was claymation.

Oh man, this is great. The hype thread was oozing at every. single. word. Then a few screens show up and BLAM negativity everywhere.

but it really does look gross. That ain't no comic book style.

"WE WANT NEW SRPG FROM THESE DEVS"

Devs make new SRPG with style to get more people playing.

"UGH THE PICTURES GAME SUX 1/10"

You buy sRPG games from IS for amazing gameplay. Yeah, the art style is pretty eh, but the actual game is what matters.

Every goddamn 3ds game screenshoot looks like crap, the games look waaay better in motion have people not learned this yet?

I am, but I've also seen good 3DS screens. Likewise I think Smash 3DS's cel shading looks rough on the 3DS - won't stop me from dropping a hundred hours on it.

Maybe make a new IP with good art?

This definitely looks like there was an edict handed down to "make it look American". Unfortunately, it's an extremely cliche, lowest-budget-cartoon-network-show "American" look.

I don't think anyone is being hypocritical by saying the art is very awkward. It really is. I'm in the camp that IS has never made a bad game. I really want to see this in motion. But their art direction does make it look like a bargain rack DS game for kids.

I don't think anyone is doubting Nintendo and Intelligent Systems' abilities to make a good game. That art style does not mesh well with the technical limitations of the 3DS.

I disagree. A number of games used cell-shading/cartoony style graphics to make the most of the 3ds' graphics. Think about Professor Layton, Ace Attorney, etc. This game might end up looking a lot better in motion.

I take it back, the art style is growing on me. They totally nailed the comic book look, and graphically, it looks pretty damn good for a 3DS game. Still wish it looked like Valkyria Chronicles, though.

Now, the character designs. THOSE are bad.

Art is really super ugly. Boxart looks like those from those shoddy games you find in bargain bin. Hopefully the gameplay is really great because that is one ugly duckling.

I think the art looks good, once you notice the Kirby dots (as in, the dot-pattern-based style of the legendary Jack Kirby). The dots really tie together the art design nicely. I also like the retro color scheme they're using here.

I also have a feeling that the sharply-delineated shadows will look really nice in-game and in stereo 3D.

sums it up nicely. With the pedigree of the developer, people are seriously getting ruffled because a goddamn 3DS game has an art style?

all 3ds games have art styles. this one is just ugly.

and it sounds like most people are willing to play the game regardless of how it looks.

And this. Most IS games have been really great. Only IS game that I played didn't like was Super Paper Mario but that's just me

(Much) bigger.
Clean.

I love the way the game sounds, but Jesus is it hideous. It not only has a horrible artstyle that looks like a cheap kids cartoon but the graphics also look like something you'd expect from a tie in with a kids cartoon. I hope they hear the criticism of the art and change it because this game is so ugly it's almost offensive.

Other than the main guy's weapon, which vaguely resembles the shape of a gun, I honestly can't tell what anyone else is holding. My eight-year old self who loved to draw stuff from Star Wars wouldn't know where to start with this.

Edit: This team looks like it leapt from the pages of an iHOP kid's menu.

If they were gonna reinforce the whole comic book style with the dots then they probably should have used them everywhere and not just the box art.
