I cannot wait to play this game again on PS4. It was totally my Game of the Generation.

I do not think I will beat it on Survivor again though. Running around with little health and little supplies actually wasn't all that entertaining. Making a mistake and dying several times until I did a section "perfect" was not really fun though I did get more of a sense of achievement when I finally DID beat an area. Never finished the DLC on Survivor as I found it too hard. Could not get passed the gas for the generator part.

And boy did I run a lot.

But yea playing where I died after 1 or 2 hits, was not all that great IMO.

I think next play through on PS4 will be Hard.Normal, I was never low on supplies and Survivor I rarely had anything.

But yea an amazing game. Loved every minute of it. I hope a sequel comes eventually.

will be my first time playing this game....what should I expect.

any tips for my first playthrough?

- bricks are your friend
- explore fucking EVERY nook and cranny. Seriously. Prepare to go full OCD
- focus on upgrading weapon sway first, followed by health (though Im sure some will argue against this)
- Always stick around characters after cutscenes just in case you can trigger additional dialogue
- conserve arrows and rifle rounds especially
- dont waste a shiv if you get grabbed by a Clicker. Save them for the locked doors
- use your alcohol and rags to craft molotovs instead of health. Aside from Grounded mode, if you are low on health, you will always get tossed a free health pack. Use those along with any food you find lying around as your health refills.
- make sure your first upgrades at the tool bench are the extra holsters
- use bricks and bottles against enemies to stun and then run up to do an auto one hit kill with a bat, pipe or plank. Great at conserving the melee weapons.

and lastly..

- PLAY ON HARD WITH THE FOCUS MODE OFF

Some people will tell you to play the hardest difficulty (Grounded) for your first time, but I would suggest playing on normal/hard the first go round. It's a good way to get used to how the game plays, and it means you can enjoy the story without fear of too much frustration.

I am definitely getting this game but I had a few questions that some of you may know the answers to.

1. I was told that the PS4 game uses the Cutscene models from the PS3 version but better is there any truth to that statement?

2. I also have heard that this games multiplayer is really good is there another game that could be used as a reference point?

3. How is the AI? I hear they have a new game difficulty that was originally removed because it was deemed to hard by playtesters but is being added back in. Is this true? If so that's pretty amazing.

Thanks

1. I heard the cutscenes will still use the ingame models, and as those have been dramatically improved, expect nothing PS3.

2. You, AND EVERYBODY ELSE, who didn't take the plunge into MP owes it to themselves to do so this time around at 60fps. I am a competitive focussed player, not pro or obsessive, but I love social contest - and this game is my MP of the last 5 years. It is intensely tactical, cooperative, credible, stressful, real, in all the ways that countless military shooters claim to be, and this is not one of those. In terms of references: Gears of War for it's small team 3rd person arena combination with strategy, emphasis on revives and following-through with executions, teamplay. It moves like nothing else, so fluid traversal, your avatar touching and connecting with the world, and the pace is forced to a more gradual, considered, cagey rhythm which I adore. Maybe more Splinter Cell, or Day Z.. life is precious and all of the values of SP carry over. Listen Mode is your radar, that makes careless players lighthouses, and stealthy ones predators. It is beautiful to have matches erupt into occasional crescendo firefights that ebb and flow and dissipate as the stakes get too high. TRY IT. You will get butchered at first, I did, there will be dozens of seasoned players returning. But skill is the only advantage, it is balanced. You will find your own style, and love will ensue. At least play yourself through 12 weeks of getting your head caved in, and by then you'll know..

3. Yes, Grounded Mode. It is brutal. Actually the ones already there are pretty brutal. So much to enjoy.

I played on normal and had focus mode off. I wasn't robbed of anything.

My first play through was that as well. Listen mode is the main thing that can detract from the experience. You'll get a better feel for crafting on Normal so you'll be able to prioritize better on higher difficulties.

Unless you're a horrible shot and dont explore anywhere, there will be absolutely zero struggle, desperation or anxiety over a lack of ammunition or crafting supplies on Normal and below, which to me kills a major part of the whole experience and what ND was trying to convery when creating the game.

I played on Hard with focus mode the first time and didn't feel it damaged my experience but a lot of time I forgot I had it.

Same here. I was stuck for ages at certain points, totally forgetting I could use the focus to lend a hand. I don't think you really need it either. Just helps people who might not be as good at games as others. On the flipside, there's no shame in using it. Like hints in adventure games. If you're stuck, use it.

2. I also have heard that this games multiplayer is really good is there another game that could be used as a reference point?

The game's multiplayer is fantastic and I will never miss an opportunity to sing its praises. I'd say the most accurate description I can give is Gears of War + Rainbow Six Vegas + Counter-Strike.

The maps are symmetrical, arena style designs with multiple choke points and sight lines. While there are player loadouts with weapons and skills, there are item supply boxes which act as the games' map control locations and dictate game flow, sort of how power weapons would work in an arena shooter multiplayer game. This plus the constant transitioning from cover to cover quickly or stealthily makes it similar to Gears of War/R6V.

There is only a limited amount of ammo per spawn, which must be recovered from downed players, item boxes, or can be purchased in the the in-game store. The in game store is one area where the Counter-Strike element is most prevalent. You gain parts from completing any action (downing, executing, playing objective, healing, gifting items, etc.) and these parts are used in the store to upgrade your held weapons, buy any purchasable weapon you have equipped, buy personal armor, or buy ammunition.

One of the things that makes it it so enjoyable is the balance between cautious, stealth focused gameplay and intense, all out action, with a focus on teamwork and communication. All of these elements are necessary for real success and happen pretty much every match you play. Couple that with low ammo counts which places an emphasis on not wasting ammo/landing shots makes for a very rewarding and addictive game, especially with friends.

More people should play it, and I absolutely cannot wait to play again in a few weeks.

I would recommend hard although the first true encounter can be a bit frustrating.

But i would really really recommend to play without listening mode (off). The tension is so much better when you only try to hear them/pan the camera (and get suprised).

For me, it's like using a short cut. When I had it off I had to sit and wait a lot. Wait to see pattern or for enemies to move away and I had to duck in and out of cover to see things better.

Basically not having Focus made me take longer.

With Focus I could hit it and see what was going on and then go.

As you said it's best viewed as a hint system.

You've got this kind of backwards, or maybe just phrased it weirdly. In the PS3 version, the cutscenes used a higher fidelity model with better textures, and the in-game model was of a lower quality. The PS4 version will be using the better cutscene model 100% of the time, during gameplay.

The fun I had with the game came from experiencing the dynamic combat scenarios. It wouldn't necessarily have enhanced my experience to NOT have as many supplies to work with. I also played on normal and sometimes used listen mode. I loved the game and will be buying the remaster for full price.

I'm tired of seeing people with apparently limited perspective-taking abilities insist that the way they played a game was the most fun way possible and any other choice objectively diminishes the experience. People enjoy things in different ways and for different reasons. This should be the most obvious fact in the universe if you spend time on GAF.

That said, I will probably play on Hard for my first playthrough of the remaster, just to compensate for the fact that it's not my first time with the game.

For someone who's not played this, what's Focus? Am I right to understand it's a chargeable function that lets you see enemy movement through walls or something, kinda like Splinter Cell's sonar goggles?

If so, I can understand why it's best to turn it off. Surprised they added it; sounds like quite an atmosphere detraction.

I would say that atmosphere takes a backseat during combat, when you need to focus on enemy numbers and positions and act quickly in response. Listen mode lets you make a tactical plan, if that's your preferred play style. It isn't necessary, of course, as evidenced by those who prefer to disable it.

Yeah you hold a button and it highlights any sound enemies might be making. A bit like sonar.

I agree. I played on normal and used focus/listen mode and had a blast. It was tough enough to feel rewarding without being irritating, and I still died many many times. I don't want to throw my controller at the TV from anger - I wanted to enjoy the story. But I respect people who are better at games than me and want the ultimate challenge. Everyone has different ways they play, pick what suits you!

I dunno man, personally I find seeing the skulls and brain pieces exploding into confetti bits and then scattering onto the floor accompanied with the sound of someone dropping a jar of Tic Tacs onto a hard surface a simple joy to behold, but hey thats the detail/sound production whore/sociopath in me.

Yes, I love the gore in the MP, it's not too much, but it's just enough. And that's coming from a person that a very sensitive to shit like that

YESSSSSSSSSSS no game has come close to Gears MP for me so I hope this will be a nice replacement since I switched from Xbox.

It doesn't even have to be a skill thing. I died a lot because I liked experimenting with different opening tactics in combat scenarios to see how things would play out. Naturally, there was a lot of failure. If I had wanted to play super carefully and deliberately, I could have, and in that case, more limited resources probably would have added to that experience. It just wasn't how I felt like playing. Generally, I don't play games to exercise patience.

played through on PS3 normal/focus on (i just considered it a helping hand in terms of situational awareness).

But for PS4 I'll try normal/hard with focus off

This is something I would have wrote but you did!

Are you me?

When I first started playing I got a Gears/Splinter Cell/Counter Strike vibe. (Which is similar to what someone else already said. Mechanics like Gears, stealth like SC, and purchasables like Counter Strike. Nothing is a copy paste though and it TLOU has its own unique differences from all three titles in each respective similarity.

One of the best parts about TLOU online is the slow tactical methodical gameplay that can suddenly ramp up to fast, precision focused combat. Low ammo is probably the greatest design choice because it makes EVERY bullet count. I played TLOU online for 24 weeks in single party lobbies (mainly) and loved every second. Now I've convinced my cousin to buy a PS4 (and my other already owns one). I will finally be able to play this game with teammates and chat.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The thing I'm looking forward to the most about TLOU:R is the freaking MP!!!!

What are the censorship differences? Is it just some of the gorier executions and bombs which are toned down or are there other changes?

I ask because as a bow user maybe it wouldn't affect me much.

1. Supposedly uses ps3 cutscene models and some extra lighting etc (ps3 models were good)

2. Its hard to explain its more tactical and the best compliment I can give it is outside of counter strike (cs go , 1.6 etc) this is the closest I have seen a game capture the essential nature of cs (addictive rounds, tension, tactics, teamplay etc)

3. Havent tried the new ai mode sorry.
