LttP: Japanese 3DS LL

I think I know enough Japanese to understand Youkai Watch, but the whole "Buy a 2nd 3DS" thing is really offputting to me

I guess I might as well share a picture of mine ^_^. It's a white LL. That's a Totoro sticker, not because I'm a huge Totoro fan, but because I'm a Ghibli fan and that's the only Ghibli sticker I could find for sale anywhere.

I'm planning to buy a 3DS LL from the Akihabara Mandarake on Saturday, as I hear they're going for about 14,000 yen for a standard colour. Would it be worth paying the 18,000~ odd for a brand new LL instead, giving me a better choice of model and a free game?

Not entirely sure how much 3DS games typically cost over there to know how big the price difference really is. I was planning on getting a copy of Pokemon X anyway.

Not nearly as awesome as some of those great special editions but I love my silver LL.

If Yokai Watch is no problem than I really recommend DQ7, and also both of the Kunio games that came out if you are into that sort of thing. As others have mentioned 3D Outrun is also the best thing ever.

LL/XL is a much nicer console. It just feels way better in the hand, the big screens are so much nicer, and the battery lasts longer.

Do you have a 3DS from another region? If so you might as well get Pokemon from somewhere else, since all regions have all languages but the Japanese one is ~5000 yen and the US one for instance is $40.

Yeah. Buying a 2nd 3DS validates Nintendo's shitty region lock stance.

The region lock seems like its mostly to keep Japan paying massive prices for games (it's not uncommon for new 3DS games there to be $60-$70). Buying a 2nd 3DS is also relatively inexpensive compared to the long term cost of games, plus you can get all those cool Dragon Quest games that will never come out here.

Yep, I have an EU 3DS XL. I'm getting a Japanese LL for some of the exclusives, but I fancy another run through Pokemon, which is why I'm interested in getting X :) I have an EU copy of Pokemon Y already.

Edit: If Pokemon X is 5000 yen, then I suppose I might as well get a new console and use the voucher :)

I've been mulling over a 3DS LL purchase for a while. I strongly considered the DQM2 limited one earlier this year but bought a PS4 instead. I really want a 2DS, so I'm kind of hoping they release them in Japan soon so I can cover my Japanese region bases while getting to try out the new form factor. But if they don't do it soon I'll probably cave on the LL.

I just did the same thing OP! I watched too many nice Japanese exclusive models come out, and finally couldn't resist anymore.

Even with only a tiny tiny knowledge of Japanese, I'm doing fine in Yokai Watch 2, though I've been playing imports for a long time and Level 5 games are pretty straightforward anyway. (Though if the key quests (the ones you complete to unlock the next story quest) get more complicated that "go to this nearby store and buy X" or "defeat Y yokai nearby" I may hit a wall eventually).

Nabbed Afterburner II and Outrun immediately, and some demos. Being able to get Smash 3DS 3 weeks early will be very nice.

I'm definitely considering either the Orange Spice model, the Youkai Watch model or the Dragon Quest model (LL one btw). I can't make up my mind though, any suggestions?

I got this bad boy because 1) I desperately loved the design (despite not being a big Pokemon fan) and 2) I wanted to be able to play all of the retail and digital 3DS games that'll never leave Japan.

Part of me does wish I'd sprung for a more "typical" model, though, as I actually use this one less than I otherwise would due to my fears of scratching/damaging it :|

That orange spice one is really hot, I like that one the most out of the three.
The youkai model is super cute too, but I would pick the orange spice model.

Have to disagree here. There's not that many people who import 3DSs. Plus if someone ever figures a good regionfree hack that works on newer firmware, it just means I get a cool mint 3DS LL that could play US games and my US Zelda one for JP games. Worth it in the meantime to play these imports. Loving Taiko 3DS.

I've been very tempted to import an LL and this thread isn't making things any easier, lol. Don't care for RPGs, but would get the Sega arcade classics that haven't been released here yet, plus Senran Kagura 2 and Smash. Just don't know if it's worth it.

Dang, you guys are tempting me. What's the deal with that free game promotion. Like, if I were to pick up the Dragon Quest Monsters 2 3DS LL, would that get me something for free? Do you only get to use your "ticket" or whatever for one of those periods? Also, it looks like I may miss out on that first grouping even if I were to order now unless I got lucky.

Gah, so very, very, very tempted.

Ok so I'm probably gonna end up buying a Japanese 3DS now... I ran into some money today and I feel like spending it on one. Bah... I am still unsure of it but I'm pretty confident that I will be buying one soon. For $130, I feel I'll get my money's worth out of what I know I'll be playing. I'd get one of those jazzy limited edition LLs but they're way too much for me.

I know that I'll be using it to play Smash (and potentially other games in the future) early because I'm an impatient man, and that i'll be buying many VC/eShop titles that aren't available over here in NA and likely never will be. I'll also probably import a copy of Ace Attorney Trilogy so I can have a physical copy instead of downloading one. What are some other games that yall can recommend a guy with no Japanese knowledge whatsoever (but who is willing to learn)? Yokai Watch seems fun and is apparently pretty playable without having to know the language fluently? Are there amy guides out there an english speaker could use? I think I would really like the Taiko games as well. I'll probably get Puyo Tetris as well if it's cheaper on 3DS than on Vita.

I'm open to pretty much anything, so long as it doesn't require extensive knowledge of the language to enjoy it. I know I'm probably severely limiting myself with that, especially with some RPGs (which thankfully I can mostly do without), but yeah. ;p

I've had a Japanese 3DS (no LL sadly) for about two years now and I've only imported two games so far :(. I actually got this beast:
UTzpDdt.jpg

I imported it so I could play MH3G but shortly after it arrived the localization was announced... lol. I also got Tomodachi Collection, which was also recently localized. So noticing this trend I should probably import Dragon Quest and Youkai Watch next :D.

To be honest I'm too spoiled by my EU XL and I find it hard to go back to the small screen of the normal 3DS... I'm going to Japan in about 6 months so I might get a LL and a bunch of games then. Still have a huge backlog to beat until then anyway.

Hopefully some super nice LE LLs will be announced in the meantime :D

I was already fighting the urge to get a 3DS LL and some simple games to work on my Japanese and then this thread comes along.

The variety of Japanese hardware is awesome. I'm quite tempted by the Youkai Watch one. Is it weird that the game is not included? It seems weird.

Grabbing a 3DS LL was the best decision and purchase I did last year. Let's ignore the fact that my backlog has been piling up because I've spent most of my 3DS LL time with Monster Hunter 4.

Also make sure to have a look at recochoku (レコチョク) if you want to buy individual Japanese songs but don't feel like importing whole CD singles or albums (you can still buy whole singles/albums through the app). I have probably bought around 30+ songs from it.

I'm curious about Youkai, and I said I can't read Japanese right now (so Dragon Quest VII is not an option). Anything else you'd recommend?

Spend a weekend learning to read Katakana; most of it will read out to English words anyway (example: オレンジジュース reads as orenji juusu, literally Orange Juice). Play another recent Dragon Quest game a bit in English to see how the menus are laid out. Refer to this walkthrough as you go for when you get stuck (from the PS1 version -- its mostly the same scenarios), and you should use this Japanese language guide with google translate on/off to figure out what spells/skills/items do what (items are easier since there are pictures next to every item). The JP language guide is also good for figuring out what you learn from different classes.

I know a bit more Japanese than this but aside from the above what I know hasn't been that helpful. Using just the above I'm ~45 hours in. It's really not so bad.

Aside from that, you could get Gyakuten Saiban 123 since the Japan release includes English translation. Puyo Puyo Tetris is also good -- should be fairly easy to play since it's a puzzle game and will never see the light of day outside Japan.

Can a JP 3DS LL play NA DS carts?

Yes.

Does it get any cheaper than ~$130 and ~$160 for used JP 3DS's and 3DS LL's shipped? Those are some eBay prices from a reputable super seller and I haven't found any cheaper, but maybe I missed a site.

Had this for a few years now. I've gotten too used to my plain white XL though and I've been eyeing an import LL unit. I quite like the white Monster Hunter and Tomodachi Life ones that've been posted.

I basically have no interest in or use for the OG 3DS these days, thanks to being spoiled by the larger screens of the LL/XL, but I still want to own one of these suckers some day. Lucky you!

Welp, I just bit the bullet on an OG Ice White 3DS using fromjapan (the seller says it's in terrible condition and sold it for 8000 yen (with the box and all accessories and inserts included), but pictures and other listings of his say that the slightest scratch is enough for a D rank by his standards, lol). Would have gone for an LL but they're just too expensive for what I wanted to pay for a second 3DS. I don't really mind the smaller screen but eh. By the time it ships out to me I'll have spent less than $110 I'm guessing, so I'm pretty happy.

Should be nice having early Smash access and a far superior eShop. Probably gonna use it to help in learning Japanese as well.

People in Japan take REALLY good care of their game stuff from what I've seen.

I imported a 3DS LL shortly after Monster Hunter 4 came out, generally because I knew we wouldn't be getting the title for well over a year (ended up being right on that one) and there were a few Japanese only titles (looking at you DQM: Terry's Wonderland 3D) that I figured would never see the light of day over here, and I desperately wanted to play them. I've played my 3DS LL quite a bit between those two games and the few VC titles I've downloaded (having access Outrun 3D is awesome!), but I'm definitely looking to pick up some more Japanese games to play, just need some good recommendations!

Awesome JP collection of 3DS software! What is your ratio of physical games to downloaded retail releases? I'm mainly only looking at purchasing downloadable copies of retail games since it'll be cheaper in the long run than importing and I can have the games almost immediately rather than waiting 2 weeks or so for them to get here, but my only importing experiences have been with Play-Asia. Also, how is the Taiko Drum Master for 3DS in comparison to the original DS titles? Would you recommend it?

I should probably note that I don't speak or understand a lick of Japanese and that definitely hasn't lessened my enjoyment of Monster Hunter 4, and I've been able to navigate and play through almost all of Terry's Wonderland 3D without needing to know/understand any Japanese, but I've played the original so many times that I have the game down pretty well. I'm definitely interested in Yokai (sp?) Watch and I've played the demo for EX Troopers (plan on grabbing it) but I'm concerned with how easy it is to navigate and play through with little to no Japanese.

I still don't get why N isn't bringing more colors or LEs to the west. All things considered, North America is still a huge market. Are they afraid it might not do good? What are they waiting for?

That white 3DS LL... God, that would make me buy a 3rd 3DS.

Just look at this thing.

White 3DS XL isn't Japan exclusive. I have a UK white XL. Bought it last year.

America is literally the only region that doesn't have it.

damn I didnt know the taiko game was on the eshop. I would have just downloaded it on my 3DS instead of wait a month for the retail copy to arrive... (still not here :(

I remember when I saw a guy at Gaymers with the rare Charizard LL. Holy shit x.x

I guess Band Bros. P won't be coming here so I may look at importing it next...but is there a translation guide anywhere?

I'd also recommend Beyond the Labyrinth but it's not on eShop.

Even though I really liked the game for it's mechanics and it's atmosphere - even for it's story, I can't recommend it to everyone. It's pretty hard and if you don't understand the story, there isn't much to keep you going.

I think I know enough Japanese to understand Youkai Watch, but the whole "Buy a 2nd 3DS" thing is really offputting to me

the thing is, you wouldn't really buy a "2nd 3ds". with the LL, it's more like you're buying an entirely different console. entering the japanese eshop for the first time was like stepping into another dimension. ebooks, music, tons of visual novels by arc system works... there is so much stuff on there. It's crazy.

there is no need for a guide. the game is pretty much self explanatory
feel free to join the OT if you got any questions

I got lucky last year and was able to get my hands on an Eevee LL (+16 games)

Somehow I feel bad for even touching it... but I already managed to get more than 500 hours of game time out of it. (at least 200 hours for mh4 and about another 100 for band bros P).

buying an LL really paid off

Great collection! I am very tempted to import the LL Version despite not knowing a lick of Japanese. I feel like i'm missing out on so many great games.
