Volition announces Saints Row Gat out of Hell (PC/PS4/XB1/PS3/360, $20, Jan 27, 2015)

Bit disappointed in this. Loved Saints Row 4 and all the various addons but I am getting tired of the same city now and whilst I love GAT as a supporting character I can't say I have ever wanted to play as him.

Still at 20 bucks I will probably give this a go (kudos to them not trying to tack on a full price for this. But I really think it is time to put a new saints row in the oven and come up with a new city for us to explore.

Fuck yeah, I'm glad I didn't snag SRIV on its recent Steam sale. $29.99 with all DLC is a great value for a last gen remaster.

Expansion thing sounds fun too, I'll probably get them both.

Gat is truly this series's Poochie.

Not really, as I'm pretty sure he was the most popular character early on. But during SR3 and 4 pretty much all the other characters passed him by. And the 'boss' character has more of a personality now, which is more or less an even more extreme version of Gat.

Don't know if other sites did a writeup on the rest of the panel, but they also showed a few cutscenes.

A couple of the cutscenes were straight up musicals with the characters breaking out into song. One was between Satan and his daughter. Another was Kinzie and Gat.

IdolNinja said SR4 modding tools would be coming soon and deploying it for other people would be simple. Also that some of the content shipping with it would eventually be teaser preview weapon stuff from Gat out of Hell.

Well that gameplay demo looked like fun.

There's a new emphasis on flying, and a lot of the activities seem to be back in Hellish form. Torment = Insurance fraud with a twist, and Hell blazing looks like the standard fair race through checkpoints ish. I'm excited to see more of the weaponry, as the city looks a lot smaller.

THE SLOTH CHAIR. WE NEED GIFS, RECLINING AND ALL.

That environment sounds just like SR4 and the devs said Hell is 50% smaller than Stillwater.

I don't know if you could really have a Saints Row game not be in a city/urban environment at this point. The smaller size just sounds like a trade off for getting to make a one off new environment instead of going the SR4 route and slightly changing Stillwater.

That was extremely boring. City looks bland and small, the overly red color scheme gets annoying super fast. Graphics aren't exactly hot either. I guess they don't have shadows in hell? Or was that too difficult to add?

eh what do you expect for 10 bucks?

You mean 20 bucks.

Anyway, it shares the same problems SR4 had, so if you were tired of that, you'll probably be tired of this.
But i mean it's a stand alone expansion, not a new game... it's not like Fetch DLC for Infamous changed the fundamental structure of the game or anything like that.

I skipped SR4 so I will give this package a go at some point.

What the hell is the Saints Row franchise now though? I have zero idea what direction they are taking this thing and thats great in a real dumb way.

Looks like more SR4. Should be fine if you find yourself hungry for more of that.

I'll be over here waiting for SR5, though. Hopefully they'll get back to some kind of city simulation + worthwhile story in that one, even if they won't dial back the craziness. It's funny, as the mission scenarios have gotten more and more over the top, the city + plot have become more and more uninteresting.

Decent sized map,

It looks fun enough. I think I buy SR more for the humor then the gameplay. SR4 was fun, but I don't think I would recommend it to people. Personally I liked SR3 the most.

The control stone conversions and the other activities just look like reskinned and slightly adjusted SR4 stuff. I don't care about the tone anymore, where'd all the worthwhile content go after SR2? I think this will be the first Saints Row game I genuinely can't feel an inkling of excitement for.

Thats kinda the point.

Saints row is kinda like a sitcom based on AAA gaming. Its basically whatever idea the developer thinks of next. It doesnt have to make sense.

I just wish there was a way to have a deadpool cameo.

Man after seeing that gameplay demo all I want is a remaster/remake of SR2 that game was so fun easily one of my favourites of last gen. Maybe if i wish hard enough they'll do it.

They are not gonna do it.

A Saints Row 1 & 2 remaster with better controls, graphics, and modding sdk is all I need and I swear I'll stop shitting up threads about new Saints Row games with my negativity. You hear me Volition?

mhhhh that looks so stupid. It doesnt even look like hell. Character moves janky as fuck.

Lol Volition such a fall from greatness.

Yup.

and this franchise don't have what it made it great anymore, and seeing such a horrible gameplay from this "thing"(seriously I don't know what to call it) is just sad. it's clear that Volition lost their way.

Looks like fun. SR4 was pretty fun on my lame PC. I need to finish it and then decide where to get this expansion.

I hate that every conversation on GAF about Saints Row is choking on fools in love with SR2. It really shits up the threads.

Saints Row 2 was one of those rare rare lighting in a bottle games. The fact that they haven't been able to replicate is evidence of that, they can add all the activities back in, but it still won't be the same as the themes behind the game wouldn't be the same.

The action, story, characters would be far too over the top. Any sense of seriousness that was in Saints Row 2 was lost to the drive to be ever crazy and off the wall. It's never coming back, all we can do is either embrace the new direction of Saints Row or abandon ship and fondly remember that we got two pretty great open world titles that both challenged and in some cases surpassed the likes of Grand Theft Auto in terms of game mechanics, story, characters, etc.

But there was craziness in SR2 (Voodoo immortal dude..ect) but it was balanced, everything was right in SR2, The Boss as a charachter, the story (it's also balanced between been quirky and serious) and all other stuff. It's just that Volition seems to not know who to keep it between balanced and parody-like.(in case of SR3).

I think they can have SR2 again but it just seems like Volition want to take the easy route.

But what new direction? I honestly don't know where SR is going anymore. some people may say SR3 was their new identity (and away from been a GTA clone) but then SR4 came and it is just Crackdown/Prototype clone. and now this game look like just some random ideas put together.

IdolNinja is their community manager. I think they know what SR fans say and want but just don't care.

Probably because the SR 1 & 2 purists don't speak for all of us? Judging by sales, you don't even represent a majority. I like the direction the series has gone in. Taking it back to the sociopath Boss of 2 and making the series back into a GTA knockoff with a better sense of humor would be a step in the wrong direction, IMO.

SR3 was my first SR game and I loved it. I then tried SR2 since I got it for free on PS3, but it was so goddamn ugly and boring compared to SR3 I just said fuck it. I, for one, want more of what SR3 did.
