Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

Wait, you think this will be higher?

With how little good taste they've shown in the HUD and coloring, I'm not so optimistic, and certainly not so unrealistic.

Seriously, do I really need animated stars over an enemy I've caused to flinch or be stunned? Get that off my HUD or let me shut it off. And I don't need enemy health bars and emblems all with different colors. Don't have green and white and orange and yellow and blue and red all in the HUD at once. All in color coded text. Don't use lit up faces as indicators of control. There's got to be easier ways than what looks like a hideous bloom effect. All totally opaque.

It's just missing the sophistication to be higher for me.

I really like the nemesis system, but I'm not buying this until I hear about what I can do with the ludicrous amount of text and colors in the HUD that are used so distractingly as if I'm not an adult who would prefer not to be told in an aesthetically displeasing manner about things I can see plainly.

EDIT: gahd damn I want to cry thinking about if The Last of Us had a HUD like this.

I just stupidly bought in to the Steam Premium Edition instead of waiting for reviews like I should have, so this better be good! I have so many games in the backlog and ones I'm in the middle of... but every once in a while it's nice to join the hype train on launch day.

Not sure why ya'll are harping on his comments about the HUD. I agree, I heard talk about there being HuD customization but I can't find any solid evidence and that has me a bit concerned. I'd very much like to turn off the mini map and counter icons if I could.

Oh so hey in case no one is aware, the game also has a system that ties into the nemesis system called "Vendetta" where when an orc kills you, that orc is then populated and kinda sent to people on your friend's list who are also playing and you can then kill them in your game to enact revenge. It's kinda a player generated mission in a sense. So this could then actually kinda spur stories to talk about with other people. I do wonder if the game tells you who the orc killed on your friend's list so you can talk to them about it.

Yo why the thread title change? I preferred the original.

Yeah hearing parkour and thinking about Lord of the Rings is sorta silly.

Also, isn't there supposed to be some sort of embargo lift early thursday (today) morning? Not necessarily reviews, but impressions or something. I think it was destructoid that said that.

Its the 26th, destructoid was mistaken on the date. So less than 24 hours from now the reviews will start going up.

Still not to sure whether or not I'm gonna like this game. It looks interesting but it might get quite repetitive very fast. ( And the world doesn't seem that big ).

I don't think it will be any more repetitive than Batman or AC games. If anything it should offer more variety since there's actual magic via wraith abilities and the choice between ranged/melee combat.

I'm definitely interested in some of the ideas they've got cooked up. Them not giving code for PC reviews has me very skeptical about the port though.

This is firmly a "wait for reviews" title for me.

Same boat, actually. The obvious likenesses to Assassin's Creed were an immediate turnoff to me, but the game grew on me over time.

They've said countless times that it is not a port but built alongside the ps4/xb1 versions as its own version.

Damn that PC gameplay looks incredible even though it is compressed to shit.

I wish I had money for this, ugggggggh.

I have nothing to play. :(

THIS IS GOING TO BE SO FUCKING GOOD.

now it does not like so much AC like anymore. i really looked like a LotR Skin AC clone..glad that it changed in most parts.

What is it about this game that people find so interesting? I've tried to watch videos for the game and understand what the game is. But I just don't find it interesting at all? Am I missing something? I kinda understand what the nemesis system is, and I guess that sound pretty interesting. But everything else just seems very "meh" to me :/

It's Arkham City with a sword in Middle Earth......

I spent countless hours in the challenge rooms of the Batman Arkham games because I enjoyed the combat/predator flow and the limitations of each room. I expect to do the same in Shadow of Mordor but instead of selecting the limitations and approach (combat/stealth) before the round starts, I'll be moving seamlessly in and out of challenges and gameplay types while the world reacts and changes dynamically. Since so many people loved the Arkham games, this really shouldn't be a hard sell.

On top of this, we haven't (recently) had a Lord of the Rings game that lets us explore freely; we've had mostly on-rails fighting games and RTS interpretations. When you combine that freeroam aspect with some of gaming's best voice actors, a lead writer with an excellent pedigree and a radical but novel take on Tolkien lore, there's plenty of cause to be excited.

I'm a LOTR fan, so there's that for me. I also love art direction and orc designs. The combat I'll struggle with however, trying to convince myself that its okay to have Nightcrawler fucking shit up in Middle Earth. Looks really cool and flashy, but goofy considering the setting.

Its entirely possible that I'm just being a bit too rigid however. I'll concede that.

I've seen some of you guys talk about a 3rd open world area in the game but I haven't read or heard anything about that anywhere else. Can someone source that? As far as I know there's only Sea of Núrnen and Udûn.

There's a shot in the Machinima documentary (at 15:22) that shows two of the three areas, Udûn / The Black Gates and Gorgoroth / Barad Dur. The third one can't be seen in the shot, but we know from demos it's the Sea of Núrnen.
