The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Can do:

Keep in mind before you do anything that you need both a regular SD card (2GB or less) for installing all the homebrew and an SDHC card for actually using Nintendont. (You can just copy all the files to your SDHC card once you're done installing everything.)

Main guide to getting started
This is probably the hardest part of actually setting it up (and the only part where you can actually break something if you're completely careless.) The guide recommends that you use the Lego Batman exploit, but Smash Stack is far easier (IMO) if you have Smash Bros.Brawl on hand, so I'd look at this guide for using that instead of doing steps 2-3 in the main guide: If you happen to have neither of those there are four more exploits listed in the guide.

General advice on safety measures
A lot of it is stuff you probably know about, but it never hurts to review this kind of thing in case you plan to do more with your vwii in the future. The main guide actually covers some of the safety measures listed in here (hence why this is listed second)

Nintendont thread, including installation guide: http://gbatemp.net/threads/nintendont.349258/

Actually installing Nintendont is super-easy (you just stick files on your SD card and rename them correctly). I recommend you have a Wii U Pro Controller unless you're dying to use a different controller. Nintendont is able to use the Pro controller right out the box so that removes the need to set up the controllers if you're playing solo.

Make sure to delete Smash Stack once you've done everything. (Or else if you try to play Brawl the console freezes at the stage select screen with a hideous screeching noise and the only way to fix it is to unplug the console.)

Hopefully that helps.
Thanks a lot. I'm lacking physical space big time, and haven't played my Wii U in months, so will see what happens when I get my Gamecube back from the colour job (I've been on a retro trip for ages). I guess my main concern is GC games not working as they should via Nintendon't. Have yet to come across any issues playing them on Wii though.

Youre gonna want Wii U specific forwarders too. I'll post some later.
Thanks.

Apologies to the guys that are asking for this discussion to be moved elsewhere. This is all due to our appreciate of the Gamecube and its amazing little library, and being able to preserve it, promise!

It's just kind of taking over, is all. I don't really feel like many people are going to be using the techniques described to preserve their library, you know? I don't wanna lose this thread.

but hey, not worth the hassle if people are going to argue about it.

Same here, on both points.

I'm not bothered by it as it seems like the core of the discussion is still Gamecube based, and as a Gamecube lover I'm very interested in reading about this stuff to back up my collection. Not only that, the Wii U gives those without component cables a way to play their Gamecube games looking their best.

Yeah. I feel that any discussion of gamecube games is relevant, as...well, that's what its all about, right? Doesn't matter if they are on a Gamecube, Wii or Wii U, Timesplitters 2 is still Timesplitters 2.

I will start a new thread tomorrow for Nintendont and such with tutorials and files just to keep the modding discussion out of here. But either way, the best gamecube experience I've found so far outside of dolphin is indeed on the Wii U. Dat immaculate hdmi picture quality.

I was wondering what sort of the policy on doing a "best games on X console" kind of list is. Like in the style of the GOTY lists on GAF where you list your top 10 for the console and then it's aggregated so we get a list of the best games on the console as voted for by GAF.

It'd help to have such a list for people who always come in asking for recommendations and such. I'd also just like to see what people's favourite Gamecube games are. I'd be willing to aggregate all the votes if we just sort of do it in this thread and have like 10-40 people chime in with their top 10s.

Hasn't that sort of voting been done before? I know for sure there have been multiple polls for best RPGs.

It's been done for genres, for sure, but not for consoles and it'd probably not be easy to convince mods that such a thing should be made, especially when the console is largely irrelevent to all but RetroGAF.

I ran a poll for virtually every Genesis game several years ago. Didn't get a whole lot of activity but the results weren't bad.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=184158

Only reason why I never did it again was because I just ripped the voting script from some other guy and never really asked if I could reuse it.

Wow that's pretty cool though. GAF has changed in 7 years but still I wonder if I, or someone else, could try doing this for the 'cube.

Were all new Gamecube game sealed with Y-folds? I noticed a few sellers claiming they have new games but with no Y-folds in the seals. I'm wondering if anyone came across a new game in the past where it wasn't sealed in this fashion. Pick up up Rebel Strike and the preview disc recently and they have no y-folds.

I have seen this before, and at stores that had 10+ all shrunkwrapped the same. I know my preview disc for rebel strike didn't have y-folds.

I think like the DS some games didn't have the Y fold. I remember from GameStop (well, software etc) when I worked there I would buy new games that did not have the Y fold but just a normal shrink wrap. Someone with more knowledge can probably chime in and explain more.

Yeah, Order of Ecclesia and Megaman Zero Collection are like that for sure

Just realized the GC had some of the best arcade games ever made.

Mario Smash Football ( a LOT better than the sequel)
Beach Spikers (from Virtua Tennis creators, very addictive)
F-Zero GX
Freekstyle (IMO best motocross game apart from nail'd on 360/PS3)

Then, there's Mario Kart Double Dash with Baby Park drifting track, Smashing Drive, a very good arcade offroad game called "Dakar 2", Super Smash Bros and Midway Arcade Classics 3 which includes Hydro Thunder, Offroad Thunder, SF Rudh 2049+The Rock.

Reminder to check out goodwill/thrift stores guys, once in awhile you can stumble onto something amazing.

I hit a relative jackpot yesterday as far as Gamecube purchases go the other day.

Bought this all this

The Gamecube, two controllers, GBA, GBA link cable, Gameboy Player, Gameboy Player disc, Animal Crossing with memory card, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Harvest Moon, Pikmin 2, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Monkey Ball all cost me $25 total.

The Wind Waker and Four Swords Adventures were another $10 each.

$45 total.

Just got my Rebel Strike preview in today and not only was the disc bouncing around inside the case the damn label is peeling like my MGS TTS and RE4 discs. Can't win damn it. No scratches on the disc though.

Wait, peeling discs?

Yep some Gamecube game disc labels are peeling for some reason. I posted about in a while back. Seems to be games that use very cheep looking labels. Almost as if the entire label was painted on. All of my games still work but any value they had goes right out the window.

That's messed up. Which games have people seen this with?

Metal Gear was the first game to do this for me. RE4 seems to do it and now the Rebel Strike preview disc. I'll edit this with some pics to give you a better idea of what I mean by "painted on" labels.

I know Rebel Strike it is just a preview disc but I bought it brand new. The others I have had since release.

That's crazy.

Also, quick question for you guys regarding authenticity of factory seal (vs resealed Y-fold). I recently go this game and my gut instinct was that it was re-sealed, but then I found out Pikmin as a game did NOT have the little opening in the bottom. Can you guys tell by my pictures if this is factory/original sealed or not? I'm nearing the end of my return window with eBay.

EDIT:
Also, to mention, one of the reasons I bid on it is that it had a Player's Choice (Circle) sticker applied to the front, which made me think it was more likely to be legit since that was only added before the Yellow-Top coverart was released...

I'm pretty sure every GC release had the hole on the bottom of the case. Not having that screams reseal to me.

Edit: Wait, you mention Pikmin didn't? That's strange, I hadn't heard that.

See, that's what I thought but when I look back at some of the open copies I have of older games (including Pikmin) that were bought used they also have the bottom sealed off. I was hoping some experts could weigh in since I thought I read somewhere that initial games did not have the security opening

My copy of Sonic Adventure DX has the paint thing, but it's centered around the spindle area. Sort of like that RE4 disc. It seems like the data layer isn't remotely connected to the painted label, so it can't ruin the game, but still. No good, Nintendo!

My copy of Melee has the hole. I'm 99% sure it is a release day copy and that came out the day after Pikmin. Don't think I have anything older than that anymore though.

Edit: Actually nevermind, I guess Melee did get replaced since it has the best seller label on it. So I dunno.

It looks like all the labels that are having this issue are white. Perhaps it's a problem with the ink?

So I was able check out a launch copy of Luigi's Mansion and it did NOT have the square hole in the bottom. So there's that.

Oh my

Guys/gals, go to any local thrift store as often as possible

Why?

Well

My copy of Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader, which was bought the day the GameCube launched, does not have that hole in the bottom.

I checked my Pikmin (non-Player's Choice) and can confirm that it doesn't have the hole at the bottom. I also checked five of the sealed Gamecube games I have and I can say that from what I can see the bottom foldflaps match, if you're looking at the front of the case and tilt it to look at the bottom, the flaps on the outside of the packaging point / \ towards the cover. On the tops of my sealed games, the top flaps on the outside packaging pointed \ / towards the cover.

My sealed copy of Second Sight seems to have been very strangely factory sealed, and the top flaps at the top point / \ away from the cover and the bottom flaps meet at the middle and there's a line down the middle where the plastic is slightly separating

The kind of air bubble look between the flaps at the tops and bottoms seem to vary in appearance from the games I compared, and sometimes side where the game opens is perfectly smooth, and sometimes wrinkly. The two sealed games I had that were published by Nintendo had air bubbles that most resembled your Pikmin.

I wish I had my camera with me to show this. Do you happen to have a picture of the top or side where it opens? My two sealed Nintendo games more closely resemble each other in the way the factory seal flaps, etc. look than with the other third-party games, particularly from the top. If your first picture is of the top of the case, that's very much like my two games look from the top. Very smooth at the top and bottom edge, with a bubbly strip down the middle and where the bubbly middle strip faces the cover, it kinda curves in and out in what isn't a very straight line.

Oh right, forgot about that. Man what were they thinking?

The usual "man, we need a badass looking DUDE with a GUN on the cover! How will people know to buy this if there is some amazing looking artwork on there that is evocative of the atmosphere and is all around awesome! Here, take this shoddy CG renders!"

That's we you guys got all of these:
