Thank you sir.

It's interesting to see how the series has gone up and down in popularity over time. I wonder to what extent it was just a matter of the existing fanbase being slow to switch over to the 3DS? Or if it is a matter of a new group of (Nintendo) users discovering the series?

Also, as always, I'm curious to know how much should be added to the recent numbers to account for digital sales. As someone who has gone digital only, I'm always amazed that a majority of people still go the physical route.

Yes. compared to 1.5 second week it's 50k behind. And once again concidering the platform of choice was quite likely to get Japanese sales. Western sales will probably be even more drastic drop. You don't release a PS3 game in the second holiday season of new gen.

Damn. That Monster Hunter. Wow.

So we've got three million sellers in Japan this year? Yo-Kai Watch 2, Smash Bros., and Monster Hunter 4G.

The 3DS will have 8 million sellers this year:

Yokai Watch
Yokai Watch 2 Ganso
Yokai Watch 2 Honke
Yokai Watch 2 Shinuchi
Smash Bros for 3DS
Monster Hunter 4G
Pokemon OmegaRuby
Pokemon AlphaSapphire

According to Dengeki superior tracker =P.

------------------------

05./00. [PS3] FIFA 15 # <SPT> (Electronic Arts) {2014.10.09} (¥7.884) - 17.128 / NEW <60-80%>
06./00. [PS4] FIFA 15 # <SPT> (Electronic Arts) {2014.10.09} (¥7.884) - 16.998 / NEW <60-80%>

I think FIFA 15 is the first Western game to sell worse on the PS4 during the launch, but it was really close.

Serious question:

PSVita VS XBone LTD prediction?

Was PSPGo a bad project (commercially), but of another league? can't remember its LTD

Man, who was in control of Nintendo's supply lines back then? :p
It was a crazy period really. The DS became essentially sold out all year. The previous (DSL launched in early 2006) 2005 holiday period was really when the crazy momentum began. No one actually thought a Lite was even needed at that point.

and they repeated the same mistake with the Wii back in the days (worldwide, too)
their most impressive successes really caught them off guard

I know Kinki no Magna was made by some of the same developers but what does that game's success have to do with the Rune Factory franchise?

probably Kinki no Magna fail will push Marvelous even harder on RF5 (considering how well RF4 succeded on 3DS).

It's possible :)

The regular 3DS and 3DSLL just seem to high given the new models are the same price if they didn't get a drop.

Yeah, that's the reason I assumed there had to be some retailers selling the old 3DS's for a lower price than the new ones. OH what about supply issues for the New 3DS? Maybe some people wanted the New 3DS but had to settle for the old 3DS because the individual retailers they visited were sold out?

A; the form factor hasn't changed.

B; you clearly didn't read my post past the first line.

A bigger size is a form factor. More inputs is also a change. First of all: There's a lot of improvements to be made on Vita. Also, there's nothing preventing them to try a tablet or a phone or a slider design. And maybe something designed for remote play, with clickable sticks and triggers.

Do Nintendo and Sony pay for high selling handheld 3rd party exclusives? Or do the publishers just choose to miss out on sales?

All of the best selling 3rd party handheld games from PSP, DS, 3DS, and Vita were exclusive even though most of them had a fanbase on all handheld platforms.

I think the fact that they don't want to lose money will prevent any such revision. It wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference, it would just be throwing good money after bad.

That depends on the titles in question. Some are going to be driven by co-marketing, but others are going to be driven by thin teams, disparate technology, varying demographics, and/or hardware needs.

That's before we get to potential audience overlap as well between device ownership.

There is also the question of whether the other platforms will actually add sales or just divide them. That would be the reason MH4U is skipping Wii U despite 3U doing well, they can probably sell a similar amount on 3DS alone and save time and money.

Expected higher for 3ds to be honest.

Sales of LL indicate that a home/portable hybrid would do very well even at a large size.

u wot m8? A hybrid is a terrible idea.

The PSPGo was ahead of its time, innit. I'd like to see Nintendo release something similar but for VC & mobile gaming only.

Right, that's what I meant to imply by "That's before we get to potential audience overlap as well between device ownership."

If everyone who wants to play Monster Hunter has a 3DS, even if we assume something generous like 300,000 of them would prefer to play it on Vita, they're going to buy it anyway on 3DS, so why bother?

I think DD sales for MH4 on 3DS were somewher near 250K last September.
MHP3 was a peak for many reasons, I can't see that happening again (as for some DS software peak)

Exactly and I would assume that the temptation isn't as strong if you are already on the better selling platform.

When you mentioned overlap I thought you meant like how it makes sense for Youkai Watch to be on the same system as Pokemon but in hindsight it seems obvious that's not what you meant.

Oh that's definitely true as well, though I guess I mentally slotted that under demographics.

The Vita's exclusives I imagine heavily derive from a mix of financial incentives from Sony, a company's technology base, the hardware needs of the game, and the demographics of the people picking up a Vita.

If you think you're going to sell to the same audience on either device and it's easier for you to put out your game on the Vita and/or Sony is greasing the wheels, it's a solid incentive to go that route. The incentive grows if your game is also targeting PS3 and/or PS4 since getting it around those platforms is easier than getting it on 3DS as well.

Bu...but...

While technically Sony is a Japanese company and I can see how someone who is insane would come to this conclusion, I feel that in practice SCE is effectively a Western company with a Japanese branch.

Like that's at the crux of a lot of their Japanese market issues. They don't have much of an actual first party in Japan because almost all their investment is in the West and has been for quite a while.

Similarly, their products optimize toward the needs of the West rather than what works best in Japan. This certainly makes sense for them given where their strength is and how the dedicated market is, but it does help create the reality we see.

Yeah Sony has done a great job incentivising developers to stay focused on Sony platforms. I think a lot of people thought that Namco might bring God Eater 2 Burst to 3DS as well but they instead expanded to PS4.

I suspect they will do a soft discontinuation where they stop making it, but just let it keep selling until slowly there's no stock left.

Yeah, this is what they did with the DS Lite and DSi when the 3DS came out. I imagine that retailers will get one last big shipment of the regular 3DSs this holiday season, so that stock will be able to last until the release of the N3DS.

Sony should at least have managed to make games like MH and YW multiplats, by not doing that they pretty much gave up. 3DS having those franchises as exclusives in addition to all their own franchises like Pokemon is just too much,

I don't think they can make them multiplatform especialy YW i don't think this would sell even 500k on Vita but they should at least get MGS,FF and Kingdoms hearts
