Bloodborne Producer: Targeting 30fps for "Game Design" purposes

People really can't tell that 60vs30 gif up there apart?

Yikes.

Perhaps 30 fps was the right choice after all if people can't tell the difference? (unless it's a browser issue)

I rarely even get the taste of 60 fps on this laptop, but it's quite obvious to me even when the gif is shrunk.

Yikes.

Normally I can tell 60 from 30 without issues (there was a post on here a long while back that had gifs like that and one side was 30 and one was 60 and I got them all right) but this specific one I am not seeing it.

I'm a huge stickler for 60 FPS and I can't even tell.

I think some people just need to have fullscreen, playable gameplay to feel the framerate. Those tiny gifs, don't show as much to me.

Honestly think it's a browser issue, as far as this gif is concerned. Having them side by side, really makes the 30fps gif look all the worse too. Looks much less smooth relative to the 60fps gif.

The article includes two separate quotes about action games being 30fps. I can see one of those two quotes being lost in translation, but both?

Dark souls 2 is kinda nightmare at 60fps

Its a console thing, if you want 60fps go PC

As long as the controls are snappy I'm fine

I wish all games were 60fps, just seems like that's not a reality for now

If you can't tell the difference, then you are blessed son. Oh, if only I couldn't tell the difference!

What pray tell is an optometrist going to do? There are definitely some people out there who cannot tell the difference between 60fps and 30fps, and I see that as a blessing in disguise.

Just out of curiosity, have your tried playing TLOU: R and switch framerate on the fly? Loads of Gaffers started to turn around the subject when experienced.

Exactly.

This doesn't sound like a mistranslation to me: “they weren’t targeting 60fps because it’s not first-person shooting, it’s an action game.”

We knew it was going to be 30 fps, but pls From... Don't say this. Just keep quiet, please...

Pretty much this. It's kind of annoying though that it seems like more devs are now saying stuff in reaction to the people complaining about no 60fps in games. I honestly didn't expect them to go 60fps with this.

I literally can´t play those games with 30 fps anymore

I got a lot of responses saying people can't tell the difference between these in this specific GIF.

I'm viewing it on Chrome on the iPhone and it's pretty obvious that the left is 60 and the right is 30.

The left should feel smoother or 'sped up' while the right feels a little more choppy and slow.

Since you never get to see what it could look like, you'll never know though. People go on an on about how great MGS V looks. Obviously it would look "shinier" at 30 fps, but since no one has seen what that could look like, no comparison or complaints can be made. I reckon if you could see Bloodborne at 60fps, it would still look plenty shiny enough for you

There is nothing better than choice but we don't get choice. Same could be said about the gains from halving the frame-rate to a locked 30 fps (whether that be better resolution, better AA, shadow detail, texture detail, particle effects etc), versus inconsistent 60 fps. I have played enough 60 fps games to know the trade-offs involved. Some games are better off going for 1080p, 30 fps. In a perfect world, 1080p, 60 fps would be the norm without any compromises but those are not the times. TLOU is a good example. On PS3 I would take 30 fps and its current graphics vs. 60 fps and downgraded graphics. Even if I am provided no choice - ND made the correct choice.

I can tell the difference fine myself. I am talking about the hypothetical person who cannot tell the difference visually. Even in that case, you should be able to feel the difference anyway.

The only reason people have a hard time seeing the difference is the optical illusion created by the side by side placement, put more space between them or stack them vertically and it's night and day.

Blighttown was one spot. And it STILL managed to be infinitely less of an impediment to game play.

Dark Souls 2's frame rate on the PS3 was so bad it ought to have been dubbed: Blight Souls.

You have the most hilariously ironic username on this forum.

Consider "loquacious" instead.

Hey GAF, here's an audio clip wherein he says the part in the news article.

Edit:

Just trying to make it clear that the article is just reporting what was said during the group interview session.

I always believe awareness is the key. We need to call into question their perceptiveness unless they themselves experienced 30fps and 60fps alternatively. It's understandable when you compare COD to uncharted but unless they experience the same game first hand side by side (so far TLOU is the only case example) then only I can attest said hypotheticals to their claim.

I don't really notice the difference unless I'm playing a racing or sports game. Even in some racing games the difference isn't that apparent in some instances. Hell, I lock a lot of games to 30fps on my PC to play with more eyecandy or downsample the game...

People take this framerate thing way too seriously. As long as its stable and locked (regardless of whether is 30 or 60) it should have minimal impact on your playing experience.

Seems like there could have been some mistranslation with the translator not expressing exactly what was said 1:1 but yh fair game to the author.

I'm really enjoying Bayonetta 2 guys!

Didn't you guys make Ikaruga? WTF happened!?
Treasure is from now?

I'll compare to my favorite series, Metal Gear Solid. I'd consider MGS3 an expansion pack. 1, 2, and 4 are all in different generations and each brings something new to the table, so much so that passing them it off order is unsavory. MGS3 is one of the greatest games of all time, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't an iterative work. Yes they pulled it off, and yes it was worth full price, but if it didn't completely change the way you played, different camera system, camo system, cqc, healing, "open world", I probably wouldn't crown it.
............................

Dark Souls 2 had the worst game play breaking frame drops, slowdown, lag, magical hit boxes, and lol hurt boxes of any game in recent memory.

The world layout was also quite bad, if not a wholesale homage to FF13.

And it has by FAR the worst atmosphere, imo.

Bloodeborne looks to be carrying all of these flaws within its Quasi-Gothic, gun-toting Muggle offhand.

Well Thanks for that clip. I guess it wasn't really the fault of the journalist who wrote the article, but it was problem with mistranslated. The producer doesn't say 30fps is the best for action game when he speaks about this in Japanese in that clip.

Ah, so it's a mistranslation? Can you translate what he said?

I was going to question the exact translation. I'm sure in a perfect world, From would love to deliver the best visuals they could, while maintaining perfect 60, but they have to make compromises, and with the game looking as stunning as it does, I think 30 is fine. If it was a choice between that, and basically DS2's visuals at 1080/60, I'd choose Bloodborne.

If they actually hit 30 constantly or not though is the big question. I know people were impressed with the performance of the alpha, but Demon's/Dark Souls both have places where performance is pretty good on console, then it's just dog shit at 5-2/Blighttown and other areas.
