No Man's Sky "Super Special Announcement" at PlayStation Experience

Purely hypothetical of course, but I'm actually more curious as to how PS4 fans will react to a potential exclusivity of No Man's Sky, since in that case it would be an even worse situation than the Tomb Raider timed exclusivity deal. Will there be similar outrage from them?

I'm sure most people without agendas would be able to discuss the differences between exclusivity of the two without bursting into hypocritical flames.

"Bought" exclusivity is the worst.

I don't mind exclusivity by developer/publisher choice (niche Japanese games) because it's obvious Sony didn't need to spend a dime for Oneechanbara to be exclusive, but not when they're wasting money to exclusify games that can be made by the developers themselves without monetary support from a publisher.

Fund another Doki Doki Universe instead, please.

If that's your position, that you don't want this exclusivity for Sony to have a feather in their cap at all and you ONLY want this exclusivity so that it can support the close-to-destitute Hello Games company, then fine. I just don't think the vast majority of people in this thread salivating at the thought of possible exclusivity are thinking that way because they want to support Hello Games. They're salivating at the thought of another exclusive game to add to their list wars.

And providing "financial support in exchange for profits and exclusivity" LOWERS the amount of gamers that can experience No Man's Sky. It is that simple. And to wish for exclusivity is to wish for fewer gamers to experience the game.
I think you're vastly oversimplifying the complexity of this theoretical decision. It's not as simple as "Become exclusive, have less players in absolute terms."
Is not that simple. If they use the money to make a better game the reviews are going to be better. And more people will buy it.

Metascore: 60-70: In XB1+PS4+PC maybe will sell less than Metascore: 80-90 por PS4. So, more people will "experience"the game.

The ugly part: Is buying the exclusivity. And I don't think SONY is going to do that after using seveval times the XB1 decisions against them...
Precisely. That being said, there is absolutely no indication that this will be a first-party announcement. That's not something you would do at this event.

Probably Morpheus with it being playable for attendees. Memorable, notably, for people who can attend, implies something about the announcement attendees can experience.

Do you currently assume that the successful company behind the Joe Danger series is in a dire financial situation and is not able to sink the necessary money into No Man's Sky? And that a sudden influx of Sony money will improve their development process and produce better metacritic scores that they totally care about since there is no publisher oversight with metacritic demands?

And where are you getting XB1-PS4-PC? The game is announced for one and only one platform. PS4. They are developing for that singular platform alone. Paying for exclusivity won't change that. It will only ensure that after they release on PS4, they won't be able to get PC and XBO gamers to experience their game at a later date.

I really hope they are not in financial ruin and are forced to sell out to a smaller audience.

And my point was that most of the gamers in this thread who want Sony to announce exclusivity are wanting it not because of some benevolence towards Hello Games, but are wanting it because they're PS4 owners and want exclusivity.

Has Sony actually bought full exclusivity on a game recently? Other than exclusive DLC which they do all the time. I can't remember the last time they bought exclusivity on a full game, but perhaps I'm just not thinking hard enough.

In any case, even if you assume Sony does that regularly, it doesn't make sense for them to do it with NMS. It's already effectively at least a timed exclusive since they're launching on PS4 first. Why pay them extra money to stop working on a port? The benefit of the exclusivity will already be gained, buying the exclusivity permanently doesn't do anything for them.

My money is on playable Morpheus versions.

I don't know how that studio work. Is just one case sceneario. More money could make a better game.

The PC version was confirmed by the developers. The XB1 not, but they never said otherwise. If they were so secure that was going to be a PS4 exclusive they should said it the very first day.

I do not want that. There is always a losing team.

Obviously a Morpheus title. This sentence gives it away.
I can’t say much, but let’s say that Saturday night should be memorable for those who can attend PlayStation Experience.
So jealous of those attending.

It says special 'for people who attend the event'. I don't think we're looking at any sort of announcement, although a playable version in VR would kind of be an announcement for VR support in this game.

I kind of think that's almost a given at this time, though.

Still, will be cool to hear impressions if its a playable VR demo.

If Sony picked it up, they'd probably be publishing it, in which case, it's a revenue source, not just to spite other audiences.

It would surely spite the PC audience who are expecting the game?

Sony isn't MS, if they pick up exclusivity on this, it won't be coming to PC. Ever. And that's a kick in the teeth for those PC fans who are already bummed after Sony grabbed Everybody's gone to the Rapture and locked it down to their platform.

hello games aren't sending no man's sky out to die.

Considering the disastrous flood that nearly ruined them I don't think they would put themselves in that sort of situation after salvaging the game from almost all of their data being lost forever.

Sending No Man's Sky out to die would be the last thing they would have on their mind after what they've been through.

Hello Games insurance company didn't even cover the damages from their studio being flooded and them losing a lot of equipment in the damages, they certainly aren't in a better situation after the fact. Thankfully they managed to salvage what they could to continue development on No Man's Sky instead being left with completely nothing to work with.

Considering the reaction to the Microsoft TR announcement, I'd be surprised if Sony wanted to test gamers with a similar deal.

I think the two would be very different though, as TR is a long-established game with a history on PS platforms while NMS is completely new and has only been confirmed for PC and PS4 so far.

Already in that PlayStation Experience thread.

Also, you quoted something that wasn't actually said.

"Something super special" (actual quote) ≠ "Super special announcement"

"Something super special" can be a special-made booth where the game is playable to attendees.

Yeah, I agree with this. The fact that they say it's "something super special" for attendees suggests something specific like playable demos or beta invites for fans at the conference.

I could totally see it as the game that showcases Morpheus. Evenmoreso than other products, the success of disruptive tech is highly reliant on having a showcase that allows them to hit the ground running.

Morpheus support to be announced. Not only that, but all attendees will be able to try it out at the event.

Ooooooor the game is now PS4-exclusive/Sony have bought Hello Games. It won't be that though.

Someone was talking about this recently. I wonder whether it was an insider, or just somebody speculating. I think it was the same person also suggesting that Media Molecule were helping out with development.

I'm pretty sure that they are going to announce a No Man's Sky/ Morpheus bundle and I wouldn't be suprised if it's an exclusive by now.

What's to react to at this point? It's a new IP and Sony have apparently partially funded it - getting at least timed exclusivity. It's a small team so pretty sure they announced one platform at a time. They've indicated PC would be after PS4 so right now it's PS4 (due to funding) followed by PC followed by XB1.

It's nothing like Tomb Raider which is an established IP that already launched on PS3/PS4/360 and XB1. MS paid for timed exclusivity and SE accepted this despite the majority of players being on PS3/PS4. It might be positioned as funding but there's no way SE should need funding from MS unless they've super fucked up (which I wouldn't be surprised about in some ways).

The closest analogy to No Man's Sky is TitanFall - except there after funding to get timed exclusivity MS clearly full on moneyhatted to get full exclusivity. Of course there's nothing to say Sony won't double dip on No Man's Sky and buy it outright too for console but that would just be a similar scenario to TitanFall.

Tomb Raider stands alone as a very weak to justify timed exclusive from the consumer perspective. I figure SE just wanted to avoid the likely superior Uncharted 4 and were happy to grab some money from MS as a convenient excuse for launching later on PS4.

Would an announcement of a morpheus version be the first official game announcement for that device?

Would that imply there might be some official statement from Sony as to a launch window (even if it is just 'Holiday 2015')?

It's obviously just the release date. Where did all this 'exclusivity' shit come from?

I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being a 'console' exclusive, but really that's exactly what it already is lets face it.

Wasn't it stated that Eve Valkyrie would support Project Morpheus on the PS4?

I bet Sony is planning on giving attendees at the event a chance to play No Man's Sky with Project Morpheus. If so, I think it will be announced at launching alongside, perhaps even bundled, with Project Morpheus.

HG said that it's launching on PS4 & the PC release would follow. They talked about Xbone but no timeframe. I suspect they want to get one platform out of the door and see how it works in the wild before committing to developing on another platform, no matter how similar.

All this nonsense about buying it exclusively tho...why the warz? HG aren't Sony WWS and someone would've leaked something about Sony buying the studio of bringing the chapeau de monnaie to Guildford.

Xboners are going to have to wait for it anyway. Bask in that if you really need to bask in some weird fanboi fug of smug.

Y'know, little easter eggs like that would be amazing - having the corpse of one of SotC's more famous colossi like 1 or 3 or 13 hidden on a planet would be amazing. There's tons of cool little nods like this they could do, like a derelict Red Sun (from Colony Wars 3) beside one planet and maybe a crashed Normandy on one planet. Even though it's randomly generated I'm sure they could program in a few pre-built easter eggs like this.

Yeah this is awesome. With the game being so expansive, I bet there are easter eggs that nobody will even find without guidance from the devs.

I don't know why you ignore the difference between the two situations, No Man's Sky is a new IP made with the help of Sony, it's the same as Sunset Overdrive and nobody is mad at MS because it's exclusive, if you can't see the difference with the TR deal the problem is yours.

If Sony *has* in fact bough full exclusivity, I will be first in line to procclaim it a douche move. And the only current gen console I own is PS4.
