I haven't turned on my PS4 all week, should I just hold off until all of this is ironed out? sounds like a train wreck.

I wanted to watch some animes on crunchyroll tonight and was saddened that I was required to update to this broken firmware. But I thought, whatever, how bad it can it really be ?

Well, I got the usual 2 reboots and everything seemed fine. The main menu finally loaded up and it tried to get me to use voice commands so I quickly skipped that shit.

Perhaps 3 seconds later, a prompt came up that was trying to tell me that some of my cross bar items would not be on the immediately viewable list if it was larger then 15 items. But while it was calling that window up it crashed. Then it sat there frozen for 5 seconds or so and the PS4 shut itself off.

Well, I thought it had shut off anyway... as it turns out when I went to go manually turn it on with a button press it beeped once and did nothing. So I pressed power again and was greeted with a "rebuilding database" or something to that effect followed by a warning to not incorrectly power off the console.

It seemed to work fine after that ... well other then the blue screen of nothing when I attempt to access the store. Why don't they fix that issue ? I've had it since launch and it seems to be some kind of DNS error with accessing the store.

Anyway, I'm not overly impressed here. Perhaps it should have stayed in the cooker longer to deal with these issues ? There's no way they couldn't have known their firmware wasn't a tad buggy.

I think part of the problem comes with the communities increased pressure for them to update the firmware to keep in line with the competition. I love the fact my X1 gets updated as often as it does but at the same time would hate it if every time they did it came out a buggy mess. I would have far preferred they spent the extra time required to have it done right the first time as none of the features they have added were critical to me enjoying my console but I'm pissed that having issues I didn't have before are now affecting my enjoyment of it.

Right but it already takes them so long. What, do we need to give Sony another year for a working YouTube app?

So I gather I can/should go ahead and install this firmware as long as I never enter Standby Mode? Is that correct?

Everytime Sony releases a major uodate, I install it in safe mode. Yes you shouldn't have to do this, but I have done this since most of last gen and I have yet to experience any bugs that everyone experiences. I do this cuz I don't trust Sony's OS team at all. It is inconveniant, but because they release the major updates only once or twice a year, doing it this way isn't that big a deal for me.

Yup, I would say you'll be fine if you don't use it. Though some people in here have also reported unexpected crashes while simply using the system- so there's still that risk.

My buddy keeps having issues with rest mode, where the system won't turn back on. I advised him to go through safe mode and reload the update, which fixes the problem. Hope they release a patch to fix the issue.

I had random ass crashes while reading messages and trying to see some screenshots.

Nice job Sony. Oh also it went into rest mode on its own, i never did it myself. But luckily after a painful reboot/repair it worked and turned up.

Yeah, I thought I had fixed the rest mode bug the first time it happened after the update by doing a hard reset.

Then I did a system rebuild (or whatever it's called).

It's happened 3 times since the update, regardless of the suggested "fixes" I've tried. It's inconsistent, at best. There are times when it has worked, and the last time it borked on me I decided it wasn't worth putting it in rest mode anymore.

I agree with a lot of the sentiments here; Sony needs to be held to a higher standard. They need to figure out what, exactly, they're getting so wrong with this thing and hire proper help to get them on the right track.

My console has also been noticeably louder since the update (not "jet engine" loud, but it used to be whisper quiet and now it's not).

Also, yes, the messaging system is fucked for me. It sits at 97% sent for AGES before finally getting my messages through, and takes fucking AGES to load up a newly received message. How fucking stupid can you be to mess that up?

Got freezes here and there in the menu tonight, couln't read messages or take screenshots. I couldn't turn the system off until I decided to hold down the power button for a couple of seconds.

Fix your shit up Sony. My PS4 was an amazing experience before 2.0

My PS4 just started to beep 3 times while in rest mode, it's increasing the frequency, now it won't stop, I had to turn it off and unplug it :(

I haven't had a problem yet so I'm going to continue to use rest mode. I know of the bug so I won't have a heart attack if/when it occurs.

I wondered what was going on with stand by. It wasn't till my friend mentioned it to me that I figured this was more than just me. How has there not been a thread on this?

What "drama"? The OS has quite a few bugs and people are reporting on them. It's not like people are making shit up.
The drama is because it's a simple and mostly harmless bug which can be avoided and you can still use the system.

It's also very interesting that some people (like me) have no problem at all. Consoles are supposed to be 100% compatible so the bug should affect everybody or nobody. What makes a difference?

I know of one, sleep mode which did the same thing on my system before the update. The drama is the hyperbole. I turn my ps4 off for now, crisis averted!

I've had a couple of crashes. Once when I went to push the "button" on the front to put it in stand by, it froze. I had to try 3 times to do a hard reset before it finally worked. The second crash came when exiting out of Netflix, I was closing the application the power to the PS4 just went off. I tried to turn it back on and it beeped but nothing happened, I tried 2 more times but it just beeped and nothing happened, no light or anything came on, just the beep. I waited a few minutes on the verge of raging then tried again, it thankfully started again in safe mode.

Staying away from going in stand by and not using netflix has been fine so far.

Ugh, geez, so dl'ed the update on Wednesday and hadnt played the system since. After downloading, turned the system off completely in menu.
Go to turn it on today via the button on front-doesnt work. Turn it on with controller - it turns on. BUT it freezes on "system health/settings" screen. Can't turn it back off with the button on front or the controller. I'm fucked right? :/
Pretty close to just powering down the system the worst way, but worried I might brick it.

Edit: unplugged it. Wouldn't power up from controller or button on system after for a few minutes. Finally (thank God) powered up with button press on system, did a rebuild, gave me a warning, then straight up crashed on xmb.
The Fuck Sony?? I'd like my system to actually work normally by the time Dragon Age comes out! :(

Well you should be able to restore the firmware in safe mode if it does not start properly.

(Only if there is no real hardware fault)

System straight up would not go into Safe Mode at all. Wasn't even registering my finger over the button.
Really bad and confusing to have a hardware fault at the same time as all of this (assuming that's what it should be)

Has anyone else who had the rest mode system lock-up noticed that items where d/loading or queued to d/load once the system was powered back on? The first time I had the rest mode issue, the system was d/loading or queuing in the low power state. ( as it should ).

After that first lock-up and applying suggested temp fixes, the system was fine with booting from rest mode, but during that period there were no background activities. This evening the system had another rest mode lock-up and when I rebooted I saw that the system was engaged in background activity while in rest mode.

In my experience, rest mode works in short intervals. 20min to 2hr = no problem. 3+ hour = freeze up.

I can confirm this, as it started happening to me yesterday after I re-enabled the "Stay connected to Internet" in rest mode option. It had been disabled for some reason during the update. I'll try disabling it again to see if it helps...

Maybe because PSN works OK 95% of the time...

No. Total and utter rubbish.

PSN as a whole in the past 6-8 months has been an absolute joke.

Friends lists lagging out.
Friend requests taking hours/days to send.
Friend requests taking hours/days to recieve.
Being unable to find and add people.
Messages taking hours/days to send.
Messages taking hours/days to receive.
Messages lagging out.
Trophies not updating automagically in rest mode.
Random crashes.
Rest mode bugs.

I could go on and on. As a paid service Sony has dropped the ball big time when it comes to basic requirements of their online offering.

Because it was fine?

No it isn't. See above.

How so? Other than the lack of quality PS Plus games for PS4, I have had no complaints so far.

Again see above.

Okay that was good. :D

The scary thing is that I'm sure many people at this point in time genuinely think this is what's going on right now at Sony.

There is a total and utter lack of acknowledgement and feedback or updates on what's going on behind the scenes. The very thing Sony was being praised for leading up to PS4 release, now however, imo MS is totally showing them up in regards to transparency and OS updates and whatever they're working on. So much so that I'm actually considering purchasing my first ever MS console.

Answer me this, when was the last time Sony actually utilised the "Live from Playstation" feature under the notifications section to tell us what's going on?

Sony just isn't interested as they seem to think "they've won."

Sure a year to get a working Youtube app does seem excessive. I guess I just worry that with Sony's newfound market dominance is going to make them careless through bowing to public pressure to get things out before they're ready.
