I think this settles it. I won't buy another Ubisoft product unless they turn a new leaf.

This sucks because I would love Beyond Good and Evil 2, but not by these folks currently.

EDIT: I'll wait to get Rogue used if I do decide on it. I won't give Ubisoft my money.

I have not actually, and I do not doubt there are games designed around this concept. I was talking about Unity in particular. Nothing I have seen in reviews or elsewhere suggests this fact, it just has a way for impatient people to hit the "unlock now" button so to speak.

Like I said, show me this game, AC:Unity, is going to take me an obscene amount of time to complete, or I will be unable to complete WITHOUT buying these packs then I'll jump on the Fuck You Ubi bandwagon.
Im sure you can finish the game without buying and microtransactions. Actually im positive you can. The point is that this paves the way for future paid titles to have microtransactions and then possibility of affecting a games design. I mean honestly though. The whole wait and see what happens attitude is the reason why things are this way in the first place. Yes it doesnt affect you now but when it does then guess what? They be able to get away with it.

I don't know what's happened to this industry I grew up with from when it started.

Maybe if developers didn't need a massive budget for what at times feels like participating in an interactive movie "PRESS X TO OPEN DOOR" they could go back to basics and concentrate on, y'know, gameplay at an affordable cost and then not need to charge us extra on top of the core game.

Games that meet expectations became more expensive to make by leaps and bounds. Top games have movie-like budgets without the ancillary incomes they enjoy like DVD/Blu-ray, cable and network and now streaming deals. So they are finding ways to wring more cash out of consumers.

Focusing on gameplay isn't doing Nintendo or Platinum any favors.

Yeah, while rewarding them with $60 each time somebody sends the message.

Good games should be rewarding to those who make them. I have no problem with that. It would tell them which game people like more, and probably why, especially after the reviews and performance complaints and people being upset about the transactions. But you're right, it's probably not a realistic endeavor. Just thinking out loud, mainly.

What episode is this from?

The very newest of this season. You should be able to see it on Southpark Studios.
"Freemium isn't free" or something like that.

It addresses games that advertise themselves to be free yet aren't free at all.
It's mostly about F2P games, but you can certainly draw some comparisons to this.

- pre-order bonuses
- release-day embargo
- microtransactions (of up to $100) in a $60 game

Maybe Assassin's Creed Unity is actually a parody of modern AAA gaming.

And what pray tell do they offer you for your gracious contribution of $100? I'm glad I avoid this series at every opportunity now.

Micro-transactions on a 60 dollar game is dirty. Unless is like post-release content or something.

These companies are continuing to experiment and push the boundaries as to what the masses are willing to pay or accept

I anticipate this behavior. There is no way these Big Money players arent going to try every idea available to them to make more money

The issue is that its bleeding game developers out. Can you imagine the amount of distraction there is away from the core ideas of a game?

I cant imagine having an organized, compelling and complete creative vision coming to fruition in this toxic environment of "Market Experiments"

Its nasty and needs to be kicked back into their faces. I know that its really only the Vocal Minority that seems to care but how long before masses of casual players get pissed off at the constant sales ploys, nickel dime tactics.

Its getting to the point where its equivalent to getting a Telemarketer call everytime you try to sit down and enjoy anything.

Horse armor should have been a grander scandal than it was. It should have put Bethesda out of business... maybe we would not be suffering all this nonsense. Who knows how much money people wasted trying to keep up with map packs and other virtual items.

Reviewers need to adjust with the times and let us no as much as possible about this overwhelming amount of micro transactions. Half the time when i look at a F2P games store, i have no fucking clue what i'm supposed to buy or why i'm buying them.

Game Journalism can save face by really tackling the hell out of this issue by giving way more coverage and assessing the value of all this content.
Only way I'll get this game now is used from someone. No way in hell Ubisoft is getting a dime from me for this title. This generation of "AAA" titles so far has been pretty disappointing for me. Things are looking bleak for FC4 for me now as well if this is what we have to look forward to.

The only one that I can think of personally that I felt was done well was Second Son. Nintendo is ALWAYS bringing the heat so I won't even bother to mention them.
Sunset Overdrive is a good game too, lots to do in that game and it's fun

Because they're focused on disposable one-shot experiences and spectacle instead of rich mechanics.

Truth. A game like Dark Souls costs but a fraction of these "play it once and trade it in" games.

If you make a game that still feels fresh after a week of playing it, maybe the used market won't be such a killer.

So if I pay 99.00 dollars, do I at least get to purchase everything in the game? If I'm paying 99 dollars, I should at least feel entitled to unlock everything with that money.

I would rather pay 99 dollars for a giant and compete game than this crap they are pulling now

Doing this convoluted garbage in the name of consumer choice is a joke. Its undermining the core development and bringing the quality down.

How do the teams even focus on making the games good? They cant. They are too distracted and spread thin to appease these wild demands

Publishers would really appreciate it if you wouldn't re-name an already disgusting business practice to something more accurate.

The saddest part of all of this is that they WILL be profitable off of these practices regardless of places like NeoGAF making a fuss about it. The majority of people playing this game will be blind-sided when they run into it in-game.

I recommend everyone watch the recent South Park episode (episode six of the current season) regarding freemium. These practices are going to wreck people with gambling addictions.

Agreed :(
