Can't believe I chose so, so wrong :(

In all seriousness, DF definitely has a place but an article on grass? Better chase dem clicks.

I saw things missing in the x1 version that seemed to be more than just grass. Bushes, flowers and more dense trees are some things I noticed.

I seriously doubt it would be missing set objects like bushes and trees.
But maybe.

If we define the nvidia demo as current-gen grass, then XB1 looks like last-last gen grass and PS4 like regular last-gen grass.

FIFA's best so far, Ethan Carter also has really nice ground vegetation.

If you're saying this article was written to generate a lot of clicks, doesn't that imply that many people are interested in this?

After still water got "solved" last gen, I think grass, fur and cloth simulation is the logical next step as far as realistic depictions of real-life materials is concerned.

It matters to people like me who want to make an informed choice. In this case I almost had no choice but to get the Xbox version because of friends but for other games every little detail matters.

So wait for the face-off and mention it there. My point is that pumping out a grass comparison article is tabloid-level clickbait.

Given that the game is out right now why should people have to wait? I'd rather they give out info as quickly as possible rather than wait for them to compile it god knows when.

A article appeared after everyone started talking about it. Its the exact definition of click bait.

But nothing wrong with that

Why? The fact that stuff like this is missing in one version is indicative that some cuts (lol) had to be made.
Is it because 1080p or because of more stable frame rate, we don't know... but the fact is - one version clearly have an edge over another.

Well it may vary from to area to area but some areas do have a pretty significant difference according to these:

mh, from the OP/article it sounded like it's not a big difference, but if it's like this in the majority of the areas, that's pretty big. At least more noticeable to the average player than 900p vs. 1080p.
That explains why some of the videos/gifs I saw looked disappointingly barren, even though the original ("captured on PS4") trailer showed so much vegetation.

Please. Just stop. Putting -gate after every "controversy" is more useless than the conversations themselves. Stop trying to make this a suffix. It's not.

PLEASE.

I don't understand why anyone gives a crap about grass. It's grass.

EDIT: I just woke up and subsequently am extremely salty. But please. I don't want the English language to be bastardized any further.

Dude don't quote his awesome gifs when complaining they are freaking epic and will be seen here for years to come. No I'm not kidding.

However, I must say when you hear the term grassgate you think something quite different...

Where's the weed - themed grassgate memes techgaf!?

When I just started playing GTAV (PS4) I drove up into the hills to overlook the city in first person mode and I was really surprised by the amount of grass and other plants.

I don't know why some are shocked about the covered the grass is getting. Grass has always been a big deal in open world games, for me at least. It was a big deal for RDR and was also just talked about recently for Shadow of Mordor.

I wonder if this and the frame difference will be it for the two versions. I am really eager to see a comparison of GTAO new gen vs. last gen though.

Excatly... the dual shock 4 features for this game is top tier, and unmatched.

Wise man.

The One controller feels really last gen for me, the speaker, the audio out and the touchpad are realy great.
The touchpad use with sliding, click and touch in each corner allows so much things

Lots of grass and full of sour creatures??
This thread is like new gen Viva Pinata.

I think dense foliage looks great. This foliage in this and Far Cry 4 look much better than most of what was served up last gen. It gives landscapes a much more naturalistic feel. Not really sure why people are hell bent on minimising it. I assume if Microft gave out a free GPU upgrade to all Xbone users none of you would say no to an increase in graphical detail?

I appreciate that many of you may prefer the Xbox for a variety of reasons but pretending stuff like this doesn't matter or look better is kind of pathetic really.

I also agree with a previous poster who said that super dense foliage is probably more obviously noticeable than the resolution difference between 1080p and 900p. People trivializing it are being ridiculous.
I can see and always prefer native resolution. However the difference in foliage would be obvious no matter how you view it. Even on a 720p display.

It's a visual thing and it looks better. Is that really hard to understand?

About as hard to understand as an obsession with technical prowess.

I've been waiting to play the next-gen version of gta and they can't even get the grass right? Like how would someone feel if they were driving around and they noticed LESS GRASS? It'll seriously ruin the experience imo. I'm not supporting that shit. I really thought this would be GOTY 2 years in a row.

QFT.

Swiping the touchpad for the radio and guns and stuff is great. It's like a big button with about 6 functions.
The quick swipe for grenade throws is cool too.

I love the speaker use for phone calls and the flashing lights during the police chase is a fun addition too.

I find the controller it's self to be just as good as the 360 one in terms of handling too.

How is having a conversation about what should and shouldn't be important remotely close to console war ideals?

Just because something looks better doesn't mean it does anything to remotely impact the game.

If more grass added to the gameplay, I wouldn't be unable to understand this obsession with realism.

For the development team on Xbox One version, it could've been a choice between the same exact foliage as PS4, or 1080p.

PS4 GPU fillrate: 25.6B pixels/sec (32 rops x 800 MHz)
Xbox One GPU fillrate: 13.6B pixels/sec (16 rops x 853 MHz)

Not surprised that despite the difference, EG says it should NOT impact your purchasing decision, lol.

Definite version (among consoles) + DS4 features, aw hell yeah.

I dunno, what those shots don't show is the heavy use of POM for grass (among other things). That also makes a huge difference and wasn't common last gen.

oh puhlease.

Having hi res texture doesn't really add anything to the gameplay. Having anti aliasing doesn't add anything to the gameplay. Having gorgeous lighting doesn't add anything to the gameplay. You can argue almost any individual element 'doesn't add anything to the gameplay' if you reaaly want to.

GTA is a sand box game that is set in something that is in many, many ways meant to replicate much of the real world PARTICULARLY visually and in sound design.

And now you're going to try and argue that you don't understand why more realism is generally regarded as a good thing in a game with such a design ethos?

Absolute nonsense, that's what that is.

The only people who are making such hyperbolic statements are those who are trying to downplay the difference, actually. It's reductive to the conversation.

Of course the density of the foliage doesn't have a tangible effect on the gameplay (outside of concealing the things you kill,) but you've gotta see why an open world game that tries its best to mimic reality in its aesthetics would have such a focus on things like grass. When you're playing an open world game set in a city, the degree of realism (to an extent) adds to the player's immersion within the world and thus, their satisfaction.

You really can't see why this is when we have a whole thread for just the game's photo mode?

I don't think you understand. How much grass there is will dictate my purchase. Why would I pay for less grass?

Does it do that with cops? Is it annoying?

It does that whenever you have any stars.

I'm personally amused by it. It's not a big deal, but it's pretty fun. Full disclosure: I also like the phone calls and the police radio coming though the controller speaker. It's nice to see some of the DS4's features get a little use.

Absolute nonsense, that's what that is.

If anything, GTA V is more aesthetically akin to the contrast of political cartoony-ness and realism, in terms of its character design, but I digress.

What I don't understand, and it's largely my fault for communicating my point incorrectly, is that barring all else, and the only real difference is foliage density, why someone would base their purchasing decision on what is essentially nitpicking.

You're not gonna get a magically better game.

It doesn't annoy me. YMMV.

I was playing it while I was in bed the other night. I had the room lights turned off and when I got into a chase with the police the red and blue flashing light lit up the bedding in front of me. It was actually kind of cool.

I have my DS4 light bar set to dim so it doesn't reflect in the TV screen so it's not really annoying. Not an earth shattering feature -just kind of fun.

I'm sure that Rockstar knows better than to stoop down to Ubisoft's level, anyways.

They don't want the bad rep/bad PR that Ubi has gotten.

1. This game has been in development a lot longer than any of Ubisoft's current batch of new games. Hence more time to take advantage of PS4's power.

2. I don't want to take anything away from Ubisoft, but Rockstar refined and defined open-world gaming. They're masters.

Also, if grass is the biggest differentiator for you here, then I guess small victories and all that, right?
