The Order 1886 at PSX - Impressions, Gameplay, etc.

http://www.gameinformer.com/games/t...al&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Ready at Dawn’s The Order: 1886 is only a few months away from release, hitting on February 20. The game captures Ready at Dawn’s vision of Victorian Era London where man uses advanced technology to battle evil. A new trailer recently debuted at the Game Awards and we got to play an extended version here at The PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas. From kitchen wars to rappelling down the side of an airship, The Order: 1886 is a hard game to pin down, but it’s intriguing for that reason. Andrew Reiner and I share our thoughts on our hands-on demo.

Kim: We haven’t seen much of The Order: 1886 yet, which is surprising since it’s coming out in February. I’m always wondering what the game is actually going to entail. Do you feel like the demo gave you a better idea of what’s in store?

Reiner: I do. I played 45 minutes of it, and walked away both surprised and pleased by it. You are right, they haven’t shown much up until this point. I feared they were hiding something, but I now think this may be a case of Ready at Dawn being overly protective of it, and not wanting to give out story spoilers.

Kim: I’ll admit I was pleasantly surprised. The gunplay felt tight and I enjoyed getting around the chaos, finding cover, and stealing guns from enemies. I also didn’t mind the QTEs, as they didn’t feel overdone or out of place. I know people have been concerned that this will be too QTE-driven, but it seemed pretty balanced. Also, the demo we played had two different areas of the airship. One felt like a very standard battle venue, but as you go into the airship, you really get a different feel the game. One part lets you see the London vista, which looks fantastic. In another, I was fumbling around a kitchen blasting down rebels. I’m really excited to see what else the world offers. What’d you think of the gunplay and locales?

Reiner: I don’t think Anglophiles are going to get much of a historical takeaway from this experience; it looks more steampunk and fantasy than a historic piece. That said, the inner workings of the airship were impressively detailed, giving off a nice sense of scale, and of the unique technologies people use in this version of London. I especially liked the lockpick, a vibrating device that shakes the lock bolts free. The airship’s escape pods (which are just mini-hot air balloons) are also quite clever.

The gunplay felt good, and the demo gave us a nice look at both cover-based shooting and sniping. I do have to question the A.I. at this point. Many of the enemies I dropped didn’t seem to fear for their lives, and stood in the same locations as their fallen comrades. The sniping reminded me a little bit of the Hitman series. In one sequence, Galahad is on the second story, overlooking a lobby filled with passengers and military figures. He’s in hushed communication with his fellow Knights, trying to figure out of if there are any rebel threats in the crowd. The player is tasked in this moment to locate soldiers without patches on their right arms. You have to wait for them to turn around, and if their sleeves are barren of the military insignia, press a button to identify them. Once the targets are confirmed, Galahad is asked to drop them. This silenced sniping moment doesn’t exactly go as planned, and gives way to an exciting assault sequence.

Kim: Yeah, I enjoyed the frantic pacing of it all. It kept the intensity up well and areas didn’t feel like “dead weight.” Even in times when the pace dropped a bit, it was to stock on up on weapons or to engage in a QTE minigame, where you had to push both R3 and L3 at the right time to hold in the lock

I wonder if the AI is set to easy on the show floor and that's why the enemies appear dumb to game informer.

At least that's what I hope is going on. Lol

Either way, can't wait to pay the Full $60 for this game when it comes out since I don't need mp to justify my purchase. And I'll keep the game in my collection if it's good.

Uncharted 2 would like a word with you.

ND had already laid the groundwork for the series with the original game. RaD have never made a console specific game or a multiplayer game before. So having them do both wouldn't be a good idea. Let them get their legs under them first with this.

Uncharted 2 is also a sequel. I think the point here is that for the first game in an IP you should be focusing on making the IP launch the best it can be with the strongest singleplayer possible. If the game is successful enough for The Order 2 to be greenlit, I'm sure it'll be fine for them to explore having a MP mode.

Very few games have good AI. It's going to be run of the mill, always aware canon fodder.

Which is why I'm not really complaining about the lack of MP. Now when The Order 1887 comes out I really do hope they include MP because I want to be a werewolf!

Looks like this is now getting very positive impressions. Great to know. RaD have never shipped a bad game. Their GOW games for PSP were amazing. I'm actually happy there is no MP. I buy games for the campaigns and the lack of MP in this game is encouraging me that the campaign and story will be first rate. Some of the best games this year (Wolfenstein and Shadow Of Mordor) only have SP campaigns. The lack of a half assed MP mode didn't seem to hurt their sales or their critical reception.

The Last of Us would like a word with you :p

But I agree with you. Some developers are capable enough of delivering both a quality SP and MP in one go, but those are very few.

RAD is new in the console game and new to the shooting genre, so they have enough on their hands already. As for the game, I am looking forward to it and pleased a lot of people seem to like the demo (I am a guy that does not mind QTE's and loves TPS games).

Played about 20 min. Game looks and feels great. Love the cover system as it felt pretty seemless in and out of cover. So far the weapons feel heavy with good kickback. Still running around and will try to get more in depth later. Myself and the order weapon. http://imgur.com/izM2LrM

TLOU still wouldn't work in this context because it's still Naughty Dog's 4th game in that generation and they had slowly grown larger as a developer, whereas 1886 and Uncharted 1 were the first games to start off a generation with new tech and r&d had to be developed from scratch. :p

Although they're totally different games and types of MP, I guess you might argue that TLoU had the advantage still of building off the experience the devs had with TLoU. In comparison, as far as I know (I could be wrong) like you mentioned, is RAD's first AAA console title. So they're lacking experience on the console front, the console MP front, etc. They really need to build a rock-solid base for the generation before they start tinkering and adding modes.

Whatever happens, I'm still looking forward to it as well.

First thing is first I want to apologize to anyone who was in line behind me because I took my time with the demo. There is no picture or video that does this games visual justice the attention to detail is absolutely ridiculous to the point where you can see the zeppelins balloon surface bend under the weight of your character while the lapels and flaps on all of your strike teams coats blow realistically in the wind. Ropes sway realistically and slap against the side of the zeppelin as you rappel down.

There were several times when I just stood around and looked at shit instead of doing what I was supposed to be doing. The detailing in the airship is also immaculate and finely detailed. The stealth sections are pretty easy (As was the entire demo) and only require you to press a button at the right time when a circle closes in on itself. Kind of like Castlevania Lords of Shadows 2 when you are hanging from the titan at the beginning of the game. Nothing difficult but not annoying and did not detract from the pacing of the game. The area before you have to use the device is probably one of the best looking areas I have ever seen in a video game with all of the poles and pipes the geometry on display is astounding with absolutely no visible aliasing anywhere. The clouds look to be volumetric and actually seem to move .... everything is just so ridiculously fucking detailed. Talkling about the gameplay which was everyones concern

The shooting is immediate and tight as is the cover system, it does not feel like gears but it feels like a combination of TLOU and Gears cover. The guns have an actual weight and recoil to them which feels different than most shooters with recoil-less weapons. They feel good also that triple crown shotgun...... just damn. The bullet time feature is very nice and does not break the game I also like that you can still miss and the machine pistol seemed to have even more recoil during bullet time. Popping in and out of cover was effortless and intuitive I also like the fact that I could blindfire without making my entire character a target. The combat dialogue was not as invasive as it was in the stage demo and I think I heard it maybe all of 6 (maybe 10) times throughout the 35 min demo.

This is currently my game of the show and nothing else is even close. This is easily a game of the year candidate. The only gripe I had is the AI is pretty dumb hopefully difficulty settings will fix that.

Excellent. I'm cautiously optimistic we may have something special here.

Nice mini review. How about A.I.? Is there difficulty level to choose?

Very nice. I've noticed the a.i acting amateurish and dumb. Hopefully they get some pointers from TLOU team.

OsirisBlack, thanks for posting your impressions. Your experience, along with other postings from this event, gives me some hope that this game will turn out alright. Thanks again.

Did you play a different demo than me? I only had the two-story fight and kitchen fight, with a brief section inbetween. No rappelling or stealth.

I hope this game can get a big impressions turn around. Sounds like it is so far and I hope they do something about whoever was in charge of marketing it.

Wow what happened to this game ... So glad to see the positive impressions from media and gamers. Hope they tighten up the gameplay and A.I. Please don't let the A.I be dumb. Biggest gripe for me in games in general these days. Pay attention to the AI Devs!!!!!

What a roller coaster of hype. Reminds me of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. People ripping then loving it [closer to release] on podcasts.

Oh, I agree with ND already having the engine and experience. I was just being a "know-it-all" and reacted to the part saying "new ip" :p

I am more hyped for this than any other PS exclusive at the moment as none of the critiques so far seem to be things that will bother me the slightest (hell, I loved playing Beyond Two Souls so there goes).

Looks to be shaping up nicely, but I'm going to wait till reviews come out/game comes out before I go grab it. Mainly because I'm trying to limit pre-orders. Plus, the pre-order bonus via Amazon is stupid.

Anybody think the reviews will be out release day or a week ahead?

Hmm, impressions are pulling me back in, as well as the IGN video. If it's a solid alternate history shooter experience like Wolfeinstein The New Order was to me, then we're good. The setting and amazing art style just keep grabbing me.

Game looks beautiful and boring. Not a good combo :([/QUOTE/])

People keeps saying it looks boring. If you were in a situation like that kitchen with a gun and people trying to shoot you how would you react? Like seriously people there is only one thing you can do is shoot your way out!! What do you expect? It's a story driven 3rd person shooter. If you are expecting anything else then forget it and adjust your expectations. If the premise of the story is not interesting to you then the game is not for you. The last thing i want is for them to give away the story. They gave background on the story. They've shown some weapons. They've shown shooting gamelan. Graphics are fantastic. That's enough for me. If you are still not sold then wait for the game to release and read reviews.

So tire of these Order threads. Come for impressions, get hate and Gears.

I'm glad I'm one of the few who always were optimistic about this game. :)

Me too. Admittedly, there were some shaky times and frustrations, but I always had faith. Don't want to get too hyped about it because we've only seen a few stuff, but I'm happy for the team, and more happy that it looks like there's a good game underneath all that potential and technical wizardry.

I would really love to learn more about the melee. I feel if they nail that lycan melee combat mechanic, it will round out a very interesting gameplay package.

I also hope that the combat hinted in the E3 2013 teaser (verticality from the lycans, multiple half-breeds) turns out real well.

MY MAN.

OsirisBlack, thanks for that great impression!

This. Sony keeps doubling down on single player like its 1996 again.

many gamers prefer single player over MP. MP is a borefest in many games and should only be confined to games like COD and BF. This game doesnt need MP. Look at Wolfenstein, it was an amazing SP experience because they focused on SP not plastered a useless MP which takes resources away from the experience. many gamers just dont care about MP

Reviews will be hate and love for this game as usual. Expecting 6-9 scores. Points will be deducted for no MP as most reviewers expect from such games which is not really fair. Also some will shit on its linearity and QTE gameplay. Hope they have replay value to counter no MP in the game though.
