Oh, forgot minecraft. Yeah Minecraft VR exclusively on xb1 will sell shitloads.(and getting to 1080p with the appropriate framerate here should be easy enough)

"The sources also believe head-worn products will become a new focus of the gaming hardware developers for the next-generation gaming devices."

please no.

Better start practicing wearing a box on your face to play your favourite games.

Not really thrilled about this news. Illumiaroom or whatever it was called was the way to go or to partner of sorts with OR.

IllumiRoom isn't a sellable concept right now. The price of the projecters needed to illuminate a room alone is way too much for the average consumer.

Besides, it was just a proof-of-concept. Microsoft never had plans to bring something like that to Xbox anytime soon.

So is MS working on VR or AR ?

or both ?

This article says VR< but MS were going on about AR up until now.

Confusing.

Personally it would be good for MS to do AR, then people would be temped to have all consoles for both experiences....

Microsoft Research has been working on both AR and VR technologies for many, many years (in fact, the guy most often referred to as "father of virtual reality" works there). A few years ago the rumors started about Microsoft planning a commercial AR headset, and now we also have rumors about them developing a commercial VR headset.

The powerpoint roadmap featuring the "Xbox720" and Fortaleza leaked in 2010 IIRC.

Ahh I see.

Both this isn't the first time we have had rumors about VR for MS

Project Fortaleza:

Fortaleza also means Fortress in Portuguese =P

I've seen a few Rift/Kinect demos, so I'd actually be kinda curious as to how those two play together. Take my hand off the controller, wave it in my face, and see it in on my in-game character?

But will the X1 have enough power to do VR well?

You dont need top of the line state of the art graphics to make VR work well. Gear VR which is a mobile VR platform uses a note 4 to power albeit basic looking games at 60fps, 2560x1440. I am pretty sure the XBOne will be able to do it well.

Great VR can be easily achieved with simplified graphics. Immersion > visual details.

If gamers can enjoy countless indie games made today, they can enjoy VR games made with similar simpler art styles in VR. Both Xbone and PS4 had more than enough power to render good VR experiences. The biggest limiting factor they have is lack of DisplayPort support. They have to stick with HDMI 1.4, which will limit them to up to 1080p120 or 1440p60 [if I'm not mistaken].

I doubt either console would go above 1080p. It is possible that future headsets might upscale that but i don't see this generation of consoles going beyond 1080p for VR

You can put in a 1440p display, but only render games at 1080p(or below...), like they're doing with the GearVR.

If this is the first we are hearing about it (saying this rumor has any validity at all) then it is still years away from being ready to ship to consumers.

VR is an exciting technology but no doubt that none of them will get mass appeal. If they don't want to wear 3D glasses, they won't want to wear a helmet. It's just not a social experience.

That said, I myself is ready for the Oculus Rift CV1.

How quickly could you knock up a copy product?

How about if MS are licensing it from oculus like gear VR, so they have oculus on xbox, while oculus stick with PC?

Disagree - most have no problem wearing 3d glasses, its the experience is not really that mind blowing and many feel that film in 2d is just as immersive.

3d films are not that amazing an experience.

If VR is an amazing experience, people will strap toasters to their head if they have to.

Easily. The question is how much of a fidelity cut would the average gamer be happy with to achieve rock solid high frame rates at 1080p minimum. Fidelity is less important than the experience is more important with vr, but of course higher fidelity allows for a more interesting and vibrant world, which probably is a whole lot more engaging.

That's good and bad at the same time. Obviously competition is great, but I also want to see a product that works well and has great software to support the hardware. I feel like if this becomes a race to see who can get to market first, both of those things will suffer.

On the good side, this could help get the price more consumer friendly than what I previously thought this type of hardware would cost.

I'm not interested in VR but I'm really curious to see what they're going to come up with. I want to be wrong and be impressed but I still think it's more like an Arcade thing.
A Sega Center with VR versions of Virtua Cop, House of the Dead or Outrun or... well almost every game :D

But at my place without the big arcade systems the VR headset itself won't offer a lot more than 1st person view in 360°... It's not that it may not be fun or good to have it in some games but the more immersion we have the better. So moving seats, surround sound and VR headset are a nice combo for a racing game.

3D hasn't failed to take off because people don't want to wear glasses.

that's what i said?

Didn't realise Gear VR is upscaling though. Does the cinema app run in native res at least?
Not exactly what you said, no, but maybe that's what you were getting at.

I also don't think there's any confirmation that the games in GearVR are running at less than 1440p, but I think that's the general wisdom right now given the impressions people have of it(along with some common sense).

I'd guess that the cinema app would run in 1440p though, sure.

With Samsung, they didn't have the know-how to do the software side of things. That's why they needed Oculus. Microsoft probably wouldn't have that problem. If Microsoft did anything with Oculus, it would be out of laziness in order to get a complete piece of hardware without doing any of the work. Would be interesting to see what the branding deal would be if that happened. Cant imagine Oculus would be so relaxed about giving away their headsets only to be branded a Microsoft product. With the GearVR, Oculus is at least still very much being credited.

please no.

You are being negative now.
With wearables, not only you will be inside that military FPS, but also feel the weight of the helmet on your head. The real experience!

In a somewhat glitchy, laggy way, they could do that. But it seems very unlikely - I doubt it would be good enough for VR.

You're only looking at the first half of the cost/benefit ratio. 3D glasses are a medium cost for a negligible benefit. That's why no one cared. VR headsets are an even larger cost but the benefit is, well at times it feels life changing (try Titans of Space and tell me I'm wrong).

I also disagree that it's not a social experience, because it's funny as fuck watching people try this stuff.
