Xenoblade Chronicles X "Direct" on Feb. 6 [info in OP]

Jumping seems kinda floaty, for lack of a better word. Like, before he makes that last jump it definitely looks like he's already taken a step off the platform.

It'll probably work in my favor, though, since I'm bad at precise jumps.

It's the art style monolith has been using since the ps2 days with xenosaga. Why is this suddenly a huge thing now? Or has this been a complaint for the last decade with new xeno games and I'm just of of the loop?

I recall some people being dissatisfied with the faces for Xenosaga (particularly the 1st) and Xenoblade, so it's nothing that has only recently cropped up.

Xenosaga 2 improved on some characters, but man Kos Mos looked just so god damn weird. It looks weird when the characters look too human like a realistic FF character.

To me, X is especially bad, a lot worse than Xenoblade and Xenosaga.

I guess since this is the first HD xeno game it's a little jarring to see these faces up close and really clearly compared to older stuff like xenoblade and saga.

But saga one has some really ugly characters.

The art design is just not meshing very well with the more realistic/detailed environmental design they are going for this time around. Not to mention that a lot of time has passed since the PS2 days. What was considered to be pretty great back then isn't necessarily still great today. :p

Xenoblade X definitely has a few graphical shortcomings starting from the human characters to pop ups and weird animations. There's no denying there. However, one also should keep in mind that Monolithsoft is likely working with a budget that is a lot, lot, lot, lot smaller than the budget of other games with a similar scale. They needed to cut some corners, but the result still looks absolutely breathtaking in the areas that matter in a game like this (in other words: the environments).

They are probably intentionally 'cheating' a bit here, because they don't want players hung up on unnecessarily precise - and ultimately frustrating - platform elements when they're really trying to explore. But yes, it looks way too blatant there.

It's the same case with the swiming, covering ridiculous distances that don't seem proportional to the animation or the laws of physics. How tedious it would be to explore vast bodies of water at more realistic speeds. Sometimes you have to suspend 'realism' for the sake of a better play experience. Jumping crazy high/far, and falling from ridiculous heights without dying all fit in there for that very purpose too.

Yeah, I can see that now, just couldn't find the right words. Platforming does look so much better now compared to the first and I will be jumping to my death every chance I get.

So über-awesome is what you meant to say ;D

A bit!

I think the faces look great, not because of their technical finesse (which obviously they don't have), but because they went with something different from trying to replicate actual human faces.

I'm just so sick of photo-realistic human characters that these designs are a breath of fresh air...

Might look a bit jank but I can live with it. I'm glad they're doing more stuff with platforming like this.

Most disappointing part of video imo...Wtf with this jump animation?

xenoblade's faces were really bad, and really really low poly, the difference is we got use to it and we know how the characters look from the official art, plus the game was just great in general and was really pushing the wii so its shortcomings were forgiven, X's faces really dont look that bad, especially elma's which look great imo

In the video you can see some parts in which the player controls Elma, while the MC follows.

Do you have a timing for that? Can't seem to find it.

And I wasn't sure it was an accurate translation for the Famitsu article. Nice to know it's in.

I know it's going to bomb because the WiiU numbers are so abysmal, but I want it to do well and become a regular franchise for Nintendo. So badly.
you guys act like WiiU still only has 4 million users out there, there are more than enough wiiUs in the wild for any game currently released for it to potentially get over a million sales lifetime.

Several times during the city walkthrough you can see Elma walking ahead of the player character, but we've known about this since the very first trailer (both Elma and Lynlee are seen being played as)

You honestly prefer this...

It's a PS2 game though. And yes I prefer it to X's faces. Elma's pretty decent IMO, Lin and the general are the worst.

I give Xenoblade a pass because it's on the Wii, but there is no excuse for the shitty character design on the WiiU.
Everything else about this game is perfect, but the faces, grrr. This is like reverse FFXIII.

Wii had a huge userbase and Xenoblade sold below 150,000 in its first week...

I'm not too hopeful for this one =(

iirc when they were showing off the residental area, this shouldnt come as a surprise tho.

Not too convinced about the city shots, could be she's just guiding the MC, we're seeing a lot of "non-gameplay" similar shots with other characters too. I'll check up that first trailer again though.

EDIT: You're right about the first trailer. Game has changed so much since though. The "MC-only" speculation came from the Treehouse demo. Back in that old thread the menus were analyzed and it kinda seemed like other characters weren't controllable. I'm sure glad that doesn't seem to be the case, but I'd like to see some battle footage with other characters just to be sure!

The reasons you don't like the faces have nothing to do with the Wii U.

I think they just made the platforming more forgiving. Unless this is just an animation thing, it looks like they've given you a small window of time after you've gone off the edge to still be able to jump. I seem to recall noticing a similar mechanic in Rayman Origins, where I'd make jumps that I felt I had reacted too late to, whereas in other 2D platformers like Mario, I would sometimes hit the button a fraction of a second too late and just end up plummeting to my death.

Watching old trailers again. The new "official MC" design used in latest trailers looks 10x worse than the one they were using in the 1st and 2nd trailer. I wonder if that's a result of them implementing the character creator in their build.

With Shulk in smash, I think the series is going to stay alive. I expect both X and Splatoon to have a presence on Nintendo's next handheld/console unless they both only sell copies.

Im worried for Xenoblade X and Devils Third, Wii U needs to be a Zelda, Mario or Smash to be somewhat successful, after Bayo 2 im sure the userbase isn't going to support anything else.

How much did Bayo 2 sell on Wii U? I know it didn't do that well in Japan and I bought my copy on Day 1.. :(

Am I the only one who needs another box of tissues..? :Oo

I was posting about the best developers of all time on another forum and reckon that you could add Monolith to the list of EAD, Retro, Valve, id and Factor 5. What they've managed to do with Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii and now Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U is pretty jaw dropping given what's under the hood of each console.

I'm pretty sure that's the Donkey Kong type roll jump.

probably to give some leeway so people don't fall off a lot with the new platforming....

Ahhhhh Ninty handholding, gone too far, pre order cancelled!!

this comparison wont work today, that "under 150,000" first week im guessing you got from europe only cause we havent got numbers for NA and from what I remembered it ended up selling expectations and exceeding them in NA, xenoblade now has also made a name for itself in the gamin industry and its not like the JRPG fans are drowning in console RPGs to not take notice of this.

The default character is customizeable so I wonder why it's even an issue.....

Oh yeah.
Can the main character learn different moves or anything? You know how Shulk had set moves? So I was wondering if anyone knew if that was customizeable with the character in this game. Like classes or something.

There's nothing "wrong" with it. They just made a really wide and high jump for better platforming. It doesn't look realistic at all, but it seems like it was made more for convenience and so they can have wider spaces for areas (accommodates the larger world).

Jumping looks like it'll be pretty fun, so I don't mind. A realistic-looking but less useful jump would be worse.

So based on the continent map. Is this game basically just 5 gigantic areas? That doesn't seem promising if so, even if they are massive.

I didn't watch the video by the way.

Just watched the "direct". Man it can not be stated enough how godly Monolith Soft's environment designers are. In any other game these probably would have been flat fields with slight gradual slopes and random geographic formations and trees scattered throughout with mountains always looking in the distance. Instead we get paths that go over and under each other, clifftop viewpoints where you can see just how far you came and where else you haven't been, lakes and rivers you can swim in, vertical cliff walls with hidden caves you can fly into, a tangled mess of trees where you can actually slip between the tree trunks instead of being blocked by knee height bushes.

I'm already pretty sure I won't be loving the music in this as much as the first game's and I have serious concerns about the cutscene direction considering how badly these faces emote (seriously can we not go with Tanaka for the next game) but I still absolutely can't wait to explore this world. Because hey beautiful CG faces are common these days but the same can not be said for beautifully crafted alien worlds that let you go anywhere, anytime, all while flying around on freaking mechs. The game could have the absolute most broken and janky combat known to mankind (loved the first game's so not worried about that), the absolute most ridiculous story in the history of fiction (please don't add a scene where someone is taken away by angels please... Unless they're Nopon with wings and halos then go ahead by all means), and the absolute most boring and tedious sidequests EVER (looks like again, you won't have to return to the questgiver for certain quests so it's already better than many) and I probably would still enjoy it more than many many other games based on the strength of the exploration and art design alone.

But uh yeah! Love that we're getting Nopon merchant bands again and gimme that NA release date please.

They went into a bit of detail about it during Treehouse Live, but there is a class system for the MC with each one using different weapon types and Arts. I think they also said you can switch between different classes mid-battle.
