PlayStation 4 hits 20.2 million units sold worldwide (high sodium content warning)

Insane. Especially when Bloodborne will (hopefully) be it's first great exclusive title.

I contributed to that number though, I bought one knowing it'd get great games in the future and I'm sure many others did too.

How does this compare to the PS2 and Wii in the same timeframe?

1) ps2 ltd shipped (2000-03-31) - 1.41 million
2) ps2 ltd shipped (2000-06-30)
3) ps2 ltd shipped (2000-09-30) - 3.52 million
4) ps2 ltd shipped (2000-12-31)
5) ps2 ltd shipped (2001-03-31) - 10.61 million (note: staggered launch, so we can't do a 1:1 comparison)
6) ps2 ltd shipped (2001-06-30)
7) ps2 ltd shipped (2001-09-30) - 19.58 million
8) ps2 ltd shipped (2001-12-31)
9) ps2 ltd shipped (2002-03-31) - 24.99 million

1) wii ltd shipped (2006-12-31) - 3.19 million
2) wii ltd shipped (2007-03-31) - 5.84 million
3) wii ltd shipped (2007-06-30) - 9.27 million
4) wii ltd shipped (2007-09-30) - 13.17 million
5) wii ltd shipped (2007-12-31) - 20.14 million
6) wii ltd shipped (2008-03-31) - 24.45 million

1) ps4 ltd shipped (2013-12-31) - 4.5 million
2) ps4 ltd shipped (2014-03-31) - 7.5 million
3) ps4 ltd shipped (2014-06-30) - 10.2 million
4) ps4 ltd shipped (2014-09-30) - 13.5 million
5) ps4 ltd shipped (2014-12-31) - 19.9 million
6) ps4 ltd sell-through (2014-03-01) - 20.2 million (note: january and february only, and it's sell-through, not shipments)

I know, right? By the time I'll be ready to pick one up in 2016 it's still going to be $350 or something.

There will be price drop during the fall to $299. They will be using PS2 tactics (PS2 got price drop from $299 to $199 despite that it still sold really well). PS4 has way better price structure than PS3 so it's easily possible without them even taking loss on hw. They will not use $349 price point like they didn't with PS3 either.

Don't read too much into it.
Oh Ars Technica, bless your heart.

Still, we recommend a bit of caution before looking at those numbers and assuming that the PlayStation 4 will be a long-term, market-leading hit. A quick look at the history of console launch sales numbers shows little correlation between early sales numbers and longer-term success.
The reality is that every console this side of the Ouya sells out in its first days on the market.
True, Sony's million-in-a-day sales number dwarfs all those previous console launch sellouts in scale, and selling that many units so quickly is definitely a strong sign of potential momentum. But that raw number is likely as much a matter of Sony's production and distribution capacity as it is of higher-than-normal demand

1.72 million since january?

0.86 million per month in the weakest time of the year.

The thirst for The Order was real.
I liked the Order.

Also congrats Sony. Maybe, now that the PS4 is selling so well with little effort, some love can be shown the Vita's way?

Pretty damnpressive!

It's fun comparing it to the Wii too since they are tracking similarly WW.

Whats crazy is that this is despite the Wii selling near 4 million in 1 year in Japan while the PS4 is at 1.2 million.

The PS4 could actually be outpacing the Wii in the West.

Most interesting is that P5 leads off the list. :p I think Sony is going to be giving it a lot of marketing support as its release nears.

As they should. Its a quality franchise that is showing tremendous growth.

Damn almost 2 mil in two of the slowest months of the year?

Um... someone needs to tell Sony this is just the preseason.

Seems it's keeping up fairly well with the Wii. If the PS4 does well in the second half of its life, it should have no problems surpassing 100M.

Are casuals buying the PS4 as well as the previous (very well treated by Sony)PS3 owners? It's just difficult for me personally to see what is so appealing about this console to be selling to the mass market. Nothing wrong with it selling great, congrats to Sony, I'm just not getting why.
Multiplatforms in quantity and most being better than on ONE, Free 2 Play games (expecting more cool F2P soon), PS Plus selection of games being awesome lately (imo), and the thought of getting the games that are about to come out (many people don't wait until they're released to buy what they think they will buy in the future anyways)

They know the big franchises will release on PS4 even if another weaker console even gets some of those games. Even FFXV isn't that far from releasing and people is getting hyped.

Also, you could argue that it has no game changers RIGHT NOW, but it has enough quality games to keep you playing for ages.

E3 2013.

How is it not doing well in the US?

Lets say that it did something like 250k in february in US (numbers from my ass). Combine that with 189k in January and those are not exactly huge numbers for market leader. Solid but nothing compared to how it's doing relatively elsewhere (except Japan). Outside of Japan and US it's still ahead of Wii.

wow, that's insane, PS4 will surely surpass PS3 at this point (thats at like 80-85 million, right?) it helps that the competition is weak this time.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

January was a month with decent / good numbers per se, but bad numbers for the leader of the market. I mean, compared to the other leaders of the market. ...Or compared to PS3 (PS3 went lower than 200,000 in January years later than the launch). ...Or...well, PSP in 2008.

Good for Sony, I guess.

I think Allan bh uses the baseline of 200k for the month as to whether or not the consoles performs well in a particular region.

Sony's major boost comes from Europe and ROTW, things are pretty tied up between PS4 and XBO in the US.

I still remember dat PS4 outselling XBO 7:1 in Spain with awe lol and a few European countries have hit the 1M mark or are pretty close to it, so yeah, PS4's a beast worldwide.
