PlayStation 4 hits 20.2 million units sold worldwide (high sodium content warning)

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
6.7 million

Thanks.

Up to January 3rd/4th

PS4 WW sales - 18.5 millions
PS4 US sales - 6.7 millions

US | WW sales share - 36.21%

If the share stays the same

PS4 WW sales in January - February - 1.7 millions
PS4 US sales - 615,570

Given it sold 189,000 units in January, that would result in 426,570 in February alone...but that's way, waaaaaay higher than what can be expected, given historical MOM increases from January to February. But there's a a possible explanation.

Considering how last months of 2014 saw a US-specific phenomenon like Black Friday (it affected UK sales as well, but numbers were far lower for obvious reasons), as well as launch itself, I'd say it's possible US share is actually lower, more like 30%.

In that case

PS4 WW sales in January - February - 1.7 millions
PS4 US sales - 510,000

Which would result in 321,000 in February.

...Which is still higher than what can be expected in February, considering January's performance and MOM usual increases.

Probably, this means that US share on overall sales went quite down in the past few months, lower than 30% for sure.

Crazy, it's really weird how people buying it especially early on it's lifecycle with just a few expensive and boring games and games which look worse than on under 300 USD pc's.
The name PlayStation still sells a lot of consoles.
At least they have a few bangs like Bloodborne and Uncharted 4 in the pipeline.
Let me guess you've trolled the internet and ducktaped together a 300 dollar pc purposely so you could quote this, ps4 am cry

Interesting that the Wii at the same time in the US was putting up 300-450k months every month (and in some cases MUCH higher) and yet it is only slightly ahead of the PS4.

Shows how much better the PS4 is doing minus the U.S. and Japan.

That is really good. For the sake of my hobby I wish that these consoles keep selling well to keep msoft and sony putting money into games for us to play.

Why are people celebrating these numbers? I'd say they are pretty horrible.

Between August 10 and January 4, the PS4 sold 8.5 units. That corresponds to about 1.7 millions per month. With today's news, it is known that 1.7 million units were sold in two months. That corresponds to about 0.85 millions per month. So in just half a year, sales have halved. How is this good news?

I guess it's just Gaf falling for Sony's PR as always.

Comparing mainly Sept-Christmas sales numbers against January and February.

Clearly you see the issue here.

You're wrong. Exclusives do matter and they did for Nintendo when they released (the big ones anyways). Nintendo has no games other than 1st/2nd party which pales in comparison to the PS4 that releases a shit ton of games on a regular basis on top of 1st/2nd/3rd party exclusives.

First off the wiiu had descent third-party in the beginning of its life cycle, getting most of the major third-party franchises. It's released all of its major franchises and still can't break 10 million after 2 years, still behind the dreamcast that clearly tells me exclusives don't matter.

20 Million people without an exclusive worth buying a system over yet.

Words cannot express how disappointed I've been thus far with Sony's first party output.

I actually don't agree with you on that one. Great exclusives offerings for me since launch. Right, Shogun? :-D

Afraid you're mistaken.
There is definitely a significantly smaller gap in the US than in pretty much the rest of the planet. There is still a difference, but if XBO is selling at a somewhat not awful pace somewhere, it's in the States.

You are trying too hard. You got a tag already.

So far I think their combination of retail and digital releases has been the best of the Big 3.

Maybe digital, but their flagship AAA games have been pretty poor. The only ones I've enjoyed so far are The Last of Us Remastered and Infamous Second Son. One of those is a last gen port.

Driveclub, The Order, Killzone Shadowfall, Knack, etc have been really sub par to me.

But like I said, I trust Sony long term on software. They are capable of making some fantastic titles. They'll turn it around.

No not really. PS4 and Xbone are fairly close one to another in the US, the only bastion of hope for MS.

Rest of the world is another story.

I think it depends on the metric you are looking at. Sure, relative to the gap in the rest of the world the PS4 and Xbone are pretty close in the US. However, the gap is still in the six figures in userbase if I'm not mistaken, so it's not small by any means.

What are the numbers that support this? I'm curious.

Sony had almost 1 million lead before November, and then MS won in 2 months straight with crazy pricedrops, reducing PS4's lead to ~600k if I'm not mistaken.

Sony won January, and will most likely win February, so gap will widen again.

Well for example PS4 was shy of 1 million in middle east sometime ago. That is probably already more than ltd sales of Wii in the region. Sony has been dominant in non traditional markets since original PlayStation and now they are collecting the fruits of the economic growth in these regions.

Lol, and all those people complaining about how Sony should have dropped the price this past Holiday. Now they still have that price drop move in their back pocket for this upcoming Holiday season, or even before. It was obviously a great move to hold the PS4 price at $400, since that price has obviously had huge legs around the world.

No reason to drop the PS4 for the upcoming Holiday when they are still outselling their competition.

The PS4 system's games portfolio will continue to expand with highly anticipated titles such as Batman: Arkham Knight (Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment), Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd.), Bloodborne, Until Dawn, Tearaway Unfolded, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (SCE Worldwide Studios). The independent development community will also continue to deliver innovative new titles for PS4 including No Man's Sky (Hello Games).

Just noticed all the third Party games mentioned there all have Sony aligned Marketing.

I see a PS4/MGSV bundle. Could be on to a winner here.

Because exclusives don't matter as much as you and many other enthusiasts seem to think.

Uncharted 4 needs to be the start of it. Part of me fears that UC4 will be held to a higher standard given the franchise caliber and partially because Sony's first-party efforts have been so sub-par to this point. The game needs to deliver & can't be an UC3 type of situation again. It can't be great. It has to be amazing.

How is the "no games" shitpost meme not bannable?

Good number for Sony overall. I wonder when MS will hit this number.

So?

I'm not comparing PS4 with Xbox One and Wii U.

Yeah I agree America means less and less as the years go by. PS4 smoking it outside that country.

Couldn't agree more with this. I loved Infamous and TLOU:R but was looking forward to their other games as well and so far the impressions have not been good. Playing The Order right now and goodness, possible the most displeasure I've had with a game for years, RAD shit the bed. But I know Tearaway, Bloodborne and Uncharted 4 will be amazing so that's already enough for me, if the reason for me buying a Playstation console that is Gran Turismo gets announced soon that would also be great!

What is the reason for the PS4s success? It certainly isn't exclusive games. I think that the ps3 had better games by this point in its lifespan.
Power: indisputably more powerful hardware than the competition.
Price: cheaper.
Pedigree: greater investment in 1st party studios and demonstrably greater support for their platforms from beginning to end.
Players: focusing on games from the very beginning and not futzing around with stupid DRM policies, TV and Kinect crap. Remember that the USA isn't the be-all end-all and other countries matter.

Simple. Effective. It's good to see the company that wasn't so incredibly cynical about this generation reaping the benefits. Let this be a lesson to all console manufacturers going forward, consumers won't put up with your bullshit.

Well obviously, it doesn't matter much in terms of sales. That doesn't stop me from being disappointed by the abysmal first party output.

I don't really give a shit about Sony being happy, I give a shit about me being happy.

Bloodborne better be off the heezy, that's all i gotta say.

Driveclub,The show, infamous and The Order were fantastic to me. Killzone mp was good sp not so much and Knack was decent for a launch. Not to mention 3rd party exclusives like final fantasy and Guilty Gear Among others. I've been more than satisfied with the exclusives.

Sony dropped the price of PS2 back in the early sixth gen despite that it was smashing competition at the time. Selling more than competition is not the only target for any company. It's maximizing the results. Dropping the price of PS4 in fall despite that it is still selling well could lead to bigger profits trough greatly increased hw and sw sales and ps+ subs. Of course at the same time they would increase their market share even further.
