Seems many franchises are on a resurgence, if the port was better (60fps), I'm sure it would have done much better still.

Very happy to see this...my copy is arriving today and I'm hoping I enjoy it enough to put down Destiny for a bit. I think my wife is tired of me "Killing Hive with the Blades of Crota on Earth" and stuff =P

I hate when in case like this the franchise is more powerful than the game itself.

Banmco will make shitty games of DB eternally.

But thats clearly not the case here, its selling well because its a solid game as well as a DBZ game

Some Dragon Ball shipments:

[Japan - Europe] Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi (PS2) - 1,367,000
[Japan - Europe] Super Dragon Ball Z (PS2) - 466,000
[Japan - Europe] Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 (PS2, Wii) - 1,825,000
[Japan - Europe] Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (PS2, Wii) - 1,460,000
[Japan - Europe] Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit (PS3, 360) - 730,000
[Worldwide] Dragon Ball: Raging Blast (PS3, 360) - 700,000
[Worldwide] Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 (PS3, 360) - 580,000
[Worldwide] Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3, 360) - 700,000
[Worldwide] Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z (PS3, 360, PSV) - 620,000
[Worldwide] Dragon Ball Xenoverse (PS3, PS4, 360, XBO) - 1,500,000

Please note that these aren't lifetime totals, just the last known available data.

We're missing US sales for those titles that were published by Atari. I've been doing a bit of research and the only thing I have found is that Dragon Ball: Burst Limit sold around 930,000 units, isn't that too high for just one region?

You forgot PC, and this game has done very well on Steam. The game has been in the top 7 on Steam for a month.

Isn't this really low if you spread across 5 platforms?

Edit: Well according to data above, it seems it's pretty succesfull for a DBZ game.

Now do Naruto or Bleach.

The Naruto games by CC2 have typically been excellent.

Well, the main series games anyway. Generations and Revolution were pretty naff since they had zero plot of their own.

Really glad to see this doing so well though, and hopefully those numbers will continue to increase.
Please release the special edition on PC for the sequel though please. Sucks that the best version of the game can't have a nice statue.

I wouldn't be surprised if it has done better on Steam than on any other single platform. We'll know when Ars publish their next article I guess.

I doubt it.

Maybe more than Xbox One and last gen platforms, but PS4 most likely sold a lot more than Steam.

I really don't think so, especially not "a lot" more. It's "only" 1.5 million in total, remember. Anyway, this is just guessing, as I said we'll see when the next Ars article is published (or if they release platform splits).

Do you really think that? If it ran at 60fps, even if it had a "60 fps!" bullet point on the box, it would have made a noticeable impact on sales? C'mon man.

Even if it hasn't done better than the other platforms, I think it's safe to say that Bandai Namco has been pleasantly surprised by the response from PC gamers.

In the West probably. When you factor in Japanese sales, maybe not. Either way the PC is a significant portion of these numbers.

The game has its flaws, but it really hits on a lot of aspects that people want in DBZ games. Having a custom character that you can use in a fanservicey what-if scenario is enough to keep it from being a retread of past games. It's a good start to what may turn out to be an awesome franchise.

Is it really that good? Kinda liked the Wii fighting games, but that's all I played. I might get the PC version then.

Well, I hope you're right. The more japanese games selling well on Steam, the better (though I don't think there's any doubt Xenoverse sold well)

Good stuff. Xenoverse was great and didn't feel phoned in like most of them. The character creation, progression and online (when it worked) are outstanding. It has some flaws to be ironed out in Xenoverse 2 but its a well deserved success.

Awesome, well-deserved.

Surprised to see so many comments hoping the RNG gets fixed in a sequel. Game has only been out for a month, we've got DLC on the way - how about a patch?

It's the most fun I've had in a DBZ game since the budokai games. If they work on the balance and RNG loot they could really have something.

It is? Then what is this other factor that play on Xenoverse success? Maybe Battle of Z CaC isn't as much as advertised or extensive as Xenoverse, but I don't know for sure about this since I don't own both game.
Probably all of the fanservice. Battle of Z CaC was like just it's own thing, in XV you have this whole campaign where you take part in all of the important fights with your own character in a new side story, plus you can take that character in coop battles with or against your friends, customize it with stuff from the show, etc, etc, etc.

Super glad.

DBZ will never die.

Hopefully they let Dimps make a sequel. As novel as it is to see I'm getting tired of seeing multiple developers tackling the first stage of essentially the same concept. We're getting the Budokai Tenkaichi's of a series over and over when sticking with the developers will lead to Budokai 3's.

Battle of Z did not have CaC, you're thinking of Ultimate Tenkaichi (which was hot garbage gameplay-wise lol). Which, despite the bad gameplay people still bought it for the CaC aspect of it... even though it was very barebones (even moreso than Xenoverse if you can believe that).

The main reasons this game is selling are: Better CaC than UT, CaC implemented into main story and said story is completely unique/what-if, and the gameplay is actually a step up from what the fanbase has been getting since 2010 (and arguably since 2008 when Bust Limit came out).

GJ Dimps.

Now Re-Make Budokai 3.

Nah, Make Budokai 4 containing all the characters, however minor, and transformations, and a crate a character, and movie characters, and GT characters and Vegeta's brother and Shiny Frieza.

Budokai 3 was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good.

Its my first dragon ball game other than origins, and i really love enjoy it.

I think the reviews are quite accurate with its flaws, but they don't reflect how fun the game can be, despite the frustrating randomness of the drops.

Infinite World was effectively Budokai 4, it just flew past people's radar because Burst Limit had hit the scene -- and people were hyped for HD Kamehamehas.

The game hasn't entirely grabbed me (Destiny-style progression and grinding for loot isn't my thing) but I'm glad to see it doing well. Hopeful that a sequel will improve things quite a bit.

Not a bullet point, you don't have 60 just for a bullet point in a fighting game, you have 60 because it's simply better for that genre. 60fps fighters have always done better than 30fps fighters at retail as well.

Wait, which port? The PC version is 60fps, and PS4 was the main platform, I think. So Xbone?
PC is fine, it could have been easily 60fps on the consoles, but they did a botch port job limiting the framerate to 30fps and foregoing many simple effects as well. It could be so much better if it received a bit more effort on consoles. I'm pretty sure that's where most of the sales are anyway.

It running g at 60fps was a huge draw for the PC space. I also think it's the only version with 60fps. Too bad it's not even in the top 10 list on Steam. Must be struggling for sales on there. I mean there's some city building game at the number one spot for crying out loud. Fighting games on PC are dead confirmed.

It was #1 on the Steam top sellers list for at least a week and was top 10 for another.

If they make the next one with destructible environments/land it could be one of the best things ever. I always thought a Dragon Ball game lends itself better than practically anything to destructible environments.

Being on the Steam charts doesn't mean much. We're most likely talking about thousands in single digits and even some high hundreds near the bottom of the chart. No chance the PC version sold better than the new console versions, especially PS4.

I don't know if this is sarcasm or not :/

(The game is currently #8 on Steam, and was #1 for at least 48 hours upon release IIRC)

I do know that this one is not sarcasm, because it's Heavy. FWIW, the game currently #1 on the Steam charts sold 500k copies in 6 days.

As for your "high hundreds", I really hope you're not talking about the top 10 chart. Because, especially given the good data we now have about Steam sales, that would just be ridiculous.
