Star Ocean 5 screens (Now in "HD"!)

Wonder how big a budget they got, might just be my memory but I remember 4 being pretty technically impressive at launch whereas going by the screenshots this seems firmly stuck in last gen. Which makes sense given it's a cross gen game but there's not really a jump forward graphically.

Suppose we'll have to wait to see how the balance between Star Ocean animu garbage and the wonderful gameplay systems works out this go around.

I put in SO4 yesterday. I remember it looking pretty good, but after playing PS4 for a while, it looks seriously blurry. Some textures look weird too. This looks much sharper in comparison, and definitely a step above last gen, though obviously not as good as a ground up PS4 game with a good budget. 1080p will make a big difference though.

Star Ocean 5 is likely to be out by 2016 there about (It's started development in 2013 so 5 and a half years is a pretty good dev cycle for a Star Ocean game, especially since it's likely to be on the same ASKA engine that Star Ocean 4 and Resonance of Fate used, so some asset recycling means it'll have some foundation to work on rather then the game being developed from the ground up from nothing)

Why do I believe they are reusing assets?

If you care to look at this shot with the Gerels (slime monster with teeth)

You can see it clearly here at the 5 minute mark - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BtcnobgFjQ#t=5m00s

Same model / textures. Monster assets are definitely being reused.

So if they are reusing monster assets. That would help with the games budget and since they been working on this since 2013, that will give a lot of time to pad it out with new content, hopefully even make a fairly lengthy quest.

While its definitely the same enemy the new one looks noticeably different with what appears to be a higher poly model and more detail especially in the mouth area.

Edit here's the best shot I could get of it

I am not the smartest guy... But the math here makes no sense to me =P

Either way, I don't doubt the game will have a lot of content. The reused assets makes sense since they are both on the PS3 and the model looks just fine (if it is the same asset).

Doh...in my mind I was thinking of something entirely else when I posted that number.

Yeah I mean 3 years for new content on an existing engine with some improved assets carried over from the previous game. Seems to be reasonable still make a decent game.

I mean if it has the same amount of locations and varied environments as Star Ocean 4, then, I can see a reasonable quality out of this game.

Never played a Star Ocean game here. Really liking how this one looks though. Will be sure to pick it up whenever it's out.

Here's a slighly better picture of the SO4 Gerel the details don't seem to be the same. The texture work and even the geometry seem higher quality in the new screens

You can see it again here. Here's a much closer HD zoom of the monster asset.

Regardless.

I still look forward to playing another Star Ocean game.

The writers of SO5 are much different from SO4 right? I'm guessing this will be more inline with SO3, and I'm completely fine with that.

Look here at the details.
gerelk0urf.png

Especially on the lip. Not only does it look rounder it also has what appears to be added geometry (or some kind of bump mapping normal mapping etc) not present in the SO4 one.

Excellent. So there is definite improvements. I look forward to seeing the other creatures returning in SO5 as well.

Thieving Scumbags and other such reoccurring enemies that return from game to game.

The Gerel still creeps me out with the layers of teeth. Getting eaten by one of those things must suck.

Yuck. Who asked for this?

I did? Cry more. People can complain about the design of the girl all they want(i personally don't mind what i'm seeing), but they don't have to follow the developments at all if all they are going to do is complain about something they don't like.

Try and enjoy something if one is going to bother, being so negative all the time is not good for one's health.

I think the girls face is a little derpy but I actually think this looks quite nice. The design on that witch is bonkers though.

The 3D model looks pretty crazy with the checkerboard cutout outfit.

So expect the 2D drawn character portrait of her in the status menu (Like in every previous Star Ocean game) will be completely over-the-top ridiculous.

I definitely wanted another Star Ocean game and was afraid it was a dead series. This really makes me happy. No, the games are not perfect and have tons of flaws, but the battle systems are generally very fun.

Agreed, I really enjoyed star ocean 1-3. So long as they avoid fanservice they could have a winner... Don't think they will though which is disappointing for both many customers and their top line.

I don't think she looks nearly as bad as some people are making her out to be. Yes her face is a bit off in my opinion, but I can't fully judge this until I see it in motion.

That's not correct. She actually shows emotions on a majority of her expressions. The said cannot be said of Reimi at all

What? Her face looks exactly the same in all the pics that OP posted. And at least Reimi is cute, same cannot be said for this girl.

Yup. Writer is from SO1-3.

Honestly, I usually think this is a dumb argument, but in this case, it's pretty true, because it will be just fine if her face actually animates, unlike the SO4 models...

It bothers me but hell Lymle and Meracle didn't stop me in SO4 this won't either

i really don't get what the big fuss is regarding the childhood friend's design, it's pretty generic that's all

Er no. I can't link you to any scans, but she clearly makes about 4 to 5 different facial expressions in many of the scans she's appeared in.(i think 4gamer or famitsu might have all of them on their website)

Compare that to Reimi's face in almost EVERY situation

And its already night and day.

Which is a shame, cause her actual anime avatar in the PS3 version actually makes more emotion.

http://41.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m03q18tYfq1ql793jo5_1280.jpg

But its not her fault, edge and the rest of the characters are soulless dolls that have no real facial expressions as well. Edge actually beating her out in that department.

Both the main guy and girl from SO5 are much more emotive from what i've seen in their realtime models, which will probably make all the difference from how they look in screenshots.

The faces look better than Xenoblade X's at least

Not to mention it will probably sell more than Xenoblade X regardless of quality.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Fact: SO3 reached a million worldwide and was a Greatest Hits selection (meaning it did over 500k in the U.S.).

I'm a little late on this news, but I have to say I'm super excited this even exists. Character models be damned, I'll still buy this game day 1, regardless.

Also, I do agree with a few other posters: no matter how bad these faces are, they aren't nearly as bad as the Xenoblade X ones. Also I love that fencer swordguy's armor, and the witch costume.

Fact: SO5 is coming to PS3 and PS4 so thank you Captain Obvious. 2 userbase = far larger install base.

What's the point of this kind of pride?

Nothing, just making fun y'all.

But seriously, I'm surpised Star Ocean is one of the few JRPG series that sells a lot. SO3 was the best selling one despite it not being one of the best JRPGs. I don't know how SO4 performed though.

I'm not quite convinced. Do you have a pie chart?

No. Edit as well on my poor typing haha.

What I mean is Xenoblade is only available to those who own a Wii U while those who own a PS4, the install base is already amazing for Star Ocean 5 and the PS4 in North America. There's also still a PS3 audience (obviously, consider Star Ocean 5 isn't next gen only). That should say that there is a large enough market.

I think both games are amazing. I'm excited for both. People are going to try to make this another Xenoblade Vs FFXV thread and they really shouldn't.

I like what I see! Except for the main girl's face.

Dig the green-hair girl's design. Town looks pretty nice. As long as the combat is solid, I'm in.
