I'm buying a Wii U for Xenoblade X and a PS4 for SO5 so the real winner is me ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Yeah Xenoblade faces are easily a big shit stain.
I've never played any SO games and I haven't played a JRPG in years but I really like the look of the two girls (Miki and the witch). It's pretty hard to make anything not look generic because there's so much out there, but I think it has its own unique look already and that's commendable enough. I much prefer this over the pastel Atelier style, the "everyone is a supermodel" Final Fantasy style, or the "I'm so cute look at mi panties" style in Compile Heart games.

Looking forward to this game. Getting it on Playstation 4. Can't wait to do the item creation and all the side content.
All I see are a few posts mentioning another upcoming JRPG's awful character models, nothing more.
Also you replied to someone who said this

How did you deduct that he was criticizing the game's quality based on character faces?

To be fair, if the thing that was going to sell you on the game were the character's faces, then I don't know why you ever had hopes to buy it =P

Going by the big response everywhere, and the disappointment when it was assumed tri-Ace would no longer make console games, seems like a lot of people.
Also SO games have more than faces going for them like combat, soundtrack, meaty side content...

All the character's faces look strange though. The problem for me is that the simplistic faces clash with the character's highly detailed bodies and even more detailed environments.

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Gotta take note, tri-Ace is probably the only other Japanese company to do realistic looking JRPGs with high quality graphics (nevermind the faces), the first and other one being Square Enix's FF teams. Y'all better support tri-Ace guys.

Looks good, now please ship with an alternative Japanese voice over track to make up for the inevitable bad English voice acting.
Yeah, I'd rather take the more realistic approach with impressive lighting and tech for Star Ocean over simple cell-shaded graphics like the Atelier games. The game looks great in motion anyway outside of creepy faces, which is a modelling problem and not the art style itself.
I hope we can turn off the HUD or minimize it somehow during battles.

Actually I think there is a bit an art style problem with this SO5 shots. I don't have any problem with the characters design, that actually quite like, and I find pretty spot on even the way the realistic lighting give to the characters a vinyl statue quality. Nevertheless, while i find them integrated with no problem in the more scy-fy, clean plastic and metal environments, the contrast of the characters with the more texture heavy, naturalistic landscapes is somewhat jarring. I think they should have gone with a more heavy stylization in this kind of things.

I love art styles like this, the characters always look great. Where as games like DAI.... I have never seen more atrocious character design before.

Don't like the environments getting more realistic and then silly anime faces. Really jarring.
While I didn't really like your other post (obviously) this is where we both agree.
Lately I've realized art style and eve draw distance in games plays a major factor as why I'll even purchase a game lately.
Heavensward, FFXV, SO5,XenobladeX, Witcher 3, Batman... All have amazingly large worlds to explore along with the point mentioned above.

Throw me in with camp "what's wrong with her face?" Eyes are oddly shaped and placed weird, and she's got almost no nose. As someone else said, she looks like one of those anime girl body suit things people wear. I'm drawing a blank on the word but if you've seen it you know what I'm talking about.
That said, I'm really just glad this series is still alive and on consoles. My reasons for getting a PS4 are just piling up. Couldn't ask for more, really.

Although i like her current face, to be fair you can say all the designs are 'unfinished' because the game is only 30% complete. We don't know what else they will change by the time the game goes gold
No cause people thought the chick from XBX was that the whole time before it was debunked.
People are just gonna have to live with the fact that 3D anime style modeling without cell shading is gonna be hit or miss.

Man I don't get all the negative Nancies in here. Who cares what any of the characters look like or if they reused assets? Seriously! For once that a secret countdown from SE isn't some mobile piece of shit game and is actually a new full-fledged JRPG for home consoles and people still find reasons to complain. If you don't like this game that's fine, but no need to come in to its threads and shit all over it or the Star Ocean series in general as some have.

I think it's because SE lets 8-4 do whatever with their smaller titles. Hopefully they think SO5 is small so they won't interfere with the localization again!

Japanese game. Pages and pages of people complaining that it doesn't appeal to their western aesthetics. Rinse and repeat.
It gets tiring saw the same thing with Illusory Revelations and X although some of X's faces are just downright ugly.

I completely disagree with this. I play predominantly Japanese games. I watch anime. Heck sometimes I even read manga as well. So many of those I've quite liked the artsyle and character deaign I've been presented with. In fact by and large I far prefer Japanese character design over their western counterparts.
None of that changes my belief that in my eyes the main female looks awful. Nothing to do with it not matching my western aesthetics. Am I negative about the game as a whole? No. I'm actually pleasantly surprised and excited. But at the moment we don't have a lot to go off so I will analyse and judge whatever I see, be it in a positive or negative light. Just because I'm excited about something doesn't mean I have to like everything about it

All it takes is a different angle from a screenshot, or seeing something in motion to have a revised opinion.
If only i could post scans, many people have not seen all the scans of the characters yet, and they do give different impressions somewhat

I like how the town looks. Reminds me of the 2nd town in Star Ocean 3. Main character looks okay to me. I don't mind how the girl looks, but she better as hell not have that expression 24/7 or I'll feel like I'm being trolled when she's talking in a cutscene. I don't want a Lymle 2.0.
