Classic SEGA games receive modern art treatment.

Been a while since I posted here, but figured now's a good a time as any.

I've been following a website called Cook & Becker for a while now ever since I first saw them posing art at an event. I'm sure a lot of you already heard of them, as they've done art for Mass Effect, stuff by Capcom and Naughty Dog and more.

This time they went and got a deal with SEGA to create new art based on several classic SEGA franchises and some awesome stuff came out of it. My favourite is the Phantasy Star one, as it really evokes the series.

Not a big fan of the style used in the Streets of Rage art, one of my most beloved series, but it's cool nonetheless. Other series are Golden Axe, Shinobi and Jet Set Radio.

The price can get pretty steep, but they're limited and even then they're still affordable if you just go for the print itself.

I saw a friend of mine post these on Facebook the other day. They're pretty damn awesome. I would proudly display them on my walls.

These are awesome, that Phantasy Star art especially tickles the nostolgia, I want it on my wall. So nice to see some classic Sega games get some art love like this, also digging Golden Axe and Shinobi.

Glad you like 'em.

We are going to do project with other classic (SEGA) games as well. What game do we really need to tackle would you say? And if you know artists we should engage, let me know. Here is the whole set by the way. More at www.candb.com

Holy moly, these are incredible. I'm loving the Jet Set Radio and Streets of Rage paintings.

High on our list! Unfortunately, because it has Ferrari's in them we would need to have the Ferrari license too. Which is 'not easy' to get :)

We want to make sure these are all made under official license so we work with all the original rights holders and preferably also with the original creators and teams (if they are still active). Also to set them apart from fan art.

Shinobi one is awesome too. Prices are a bit steep though.

They're big 24 x 26 . And these prints are expensive to make. Not regular posters but certified fine art giclee prints. They are guaranteed to stay their original quality for over a 100 years.

Alien Soldier

Ristar

Dynamite Headdy

Sonic 3 and Knuckles

So far I can confirm that we will do

Sonic
Shenmue
Space Channel 5
NIGHTS: Into Dreams
Crazy Taxi
Space Harrier

Couple more. Need to look that up.

We ask artists what their favorite classic game is and that's the one we have made. They really need to have a connection with it.

So we need to find an artists that loves Dynamite Heady :)

Golden Axe and Phantasy Star are great! The Streets of Rage one is pretty cool too. You guys should print shirts.

I know you already have done Phantasy Star (my favorite of the set), but would it be possible to do Phantasy Star Online? I love the game's art style.

I'd like to see a combination of three games with a time travel theme : Golden Axe (Past), Streets of Rage (Present) and Alien Storm (Future).

I think most of these great. Not a fan of the art style of the Jet Set Radio one, but still well done. I'd love new art like this of Ristar or Panzer Dragoon.

CANNOT wait to see to see the NiD poster. Still have an original Japanese advert for the game hanging in a frame in my living room and I've always thought it needed a partner on that wall!

Will you be able to do art from old snes games or mega drive games only?

If megadrive only then I'd like herzog zwei!

We will do Saturn and Dreamcast era stuff too. Like Crazy Taxi and Shenmue.

Plus, we can do multiple prints with different artists from the same brand.

So another Phantasy Star by another artist later this year is definitely possible.

There's a really dope Space Harrier picture in my head. Lot of negative space, dude with the cannon facing down that dragon from the first level, appropriate color hues for the Fantasy Zone...

these are ace and i usually hate the majority of these type of limited run prints

Thanks :)

We also try go get artists for these that are working in video games. The Streets of Rage one was made by Sunset Overdrive's lead concept artist Julien Renoult.

Please do Rent-A-Hero, Ristar, Pulstar, and Alex Kidd.

And maybe Crazy Taxi as well ;)

Awesome work on the current covers btw, especially the JSR and SOR ones.

EDIT: Seems you're already planning one for Crazy Taxi actually. Cool beans!

Yeah, Crazy Taxi is a def

I second this always.

I was knee deep in these for a while, but my slant was always the "HD remix" angle (as in, if these were modern sprite-based games).

I ended up doing official artwork for Sega's re-release of Guardian Heroes back in the day (just marketing images, sadly, not the remaster I was hoping for).

I used to post them all the time, but all those links are long dead :)

If any aspect of what I've done remotely approaches the quality you're striving for, I'd certainly be interested.
I think I've seen those before, but they're still as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as the first time. Awesome work, mate. <3

On an unrelated note, if you ever did SF1 portraits or either Mae, Anri or Mishaela, or PS4's Alys, I call dibs on the avatar. :D

OutRun for sure. Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone are definite candidates too as far as I'm concerned.

I'd love to get a Phantasy Star print but it's just way too steep for me, I'd have to get it framed and everything wich is just adding so much to an already pricy print. It would be really cool if you could just download a high-rez print for 10 bucks and print it yourself, but I'm sure people would abuse it and just put it on the internet.

Very excited by the prospects of a Shenmue one.

I still regret the day I missed out on grabbing one of the Okami prints. Bah!

Can you make one for Sonic 2?
Basically Sonic facing off against the Giant Egg Robo (final boss)

Personally, it's something I always wanted to do myself if I ever learned how to draw :p

Wow, I love the Golden Axe one especially. Phantasy Star is great too.

I bet one that would really lend itself to this kind of treatment is Comix Zone.

A Sonic 2 print (Sonic + Tails) is in the works. The artist making it is pretty well known too. Shining Force. That is a good one too.

Rest assured I'm making notes of everything suggested in this thread! :)

As for expenses. These prints fit any standard 24 x 36 frame or 60 x 90 cm you can get at IKEA for maybe 20 bucks.
