2K teasing Advent on Twitter. BioShock? XCOM? New IP? [Up: Looking like XCOM]

A new XCOM might be relevant to my interests. I wish they had just remade the original with more mod support, more customization, more simulation features, and more randomness, i.e. I'm glad someone made Long War.

I am currently on course for around 3,500-4,000 hours or so played of XCOM:EU/EW by the time this might come out though.

It will be interesting to see just how much Firaxis can meld their boardgame ruleset ethos with simulation features in a new game.

edit: Firaxis has really never made a "AAA" game in terms of collective manpower required . It's usually been "AA", and they've been able to balance that out well by having relatively smaller teams and a fanbase that is A-OK with old-school style expansion packs. AAA would be a big jump for them and I'm not sure if that would be a good thing in the long run.

edit 2: Please oh please get Michael McCann back for another soundtrack if possible. The tracks he made for EU were god tier.

Seems like a lot of us guessed right.

It's about time also. XCOM came out in 2012.
Indeed. Looking at this old screenshot of my endgame team made me feel all nostalgic

New XCOM would be wonderful. I'm thinking about giving it a 4th playthrough soon. I've almost got all 5 starting points!

The mobile version is excellent, though I'm sad I would miss out on achievements. I might get the board game soon.

New XCOM, yusssss!

Wish list time:
Vehicles
Bigger squads
Better interceptor mechanics (something Steambirds-esque would be amazing)
Wider tech tree
More loadout options
Mod support
PCand new Gen only (probably gonna be UE4, so that might be a lock already)

XCOM!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope they've been working hard improving all the core stuff in the game. I want a better camera, more in-depth base stuff, more varied mission locations and types, and vehicle options. Come on!!!

Definitely all of this.

I'm super duper ultra glad this is shaping up to be an XCOM game. Enemy Unknown/Within is one of my favorite games last generation, super addictive.

Seriously though, this is such a great turn around for this thread. Yesterday I was reading it and every post was getting more and more depressing as the possibility of a Bioshock themed open world shooter in the modern world was being explored, developed by a studio I had never heard of.

Now it turns out it's just XCOM! YAY!!!

Yes yes yes so glad it ain't Bioshock, for me that series needs time to breathe

But X-COM EU is ripe for a fully fledged sequel. They have a brilliant core game in place but so many aspects of that game can be built upon.

More variety, deeper tech, vehicles, sniper not OP(although the little i've played of EW seem to have fixed that), more ways to diversify your squad. Sure people can think of more than I can.

Man with Invisible Inc and X-COM sure are seeing a nice wee revival of this type of game. And it's great.

If it's going to be more CQC-focused, I hope they add actual rappelling. I found it amusing to watch Beaglerush making rappelling noises when his dudes were just jumping off the ledge.

Other than that, I trust they've learned a lot from the Long War mod and will bring over some of its elements.

Wait, so would XCOM have become the Advent Agency or whatever it's called? It sounds like there's a human resistance group or something that XCOM will have to fight in addition to aliens if that's the case.

Yeah, nothing about a game with the Bioshock name thrown on it seemed appealing to me. But a new XCOM makes this a game I can't wait to see at E3.

If it helps, the designers love The Long War and talk it up on Twitter a lot. I don't know to what degree the vanilla game was compromised because of time or publisher pressures, but the devs are fans of the mod.

Why was the base game so vanilla anyway?

Incompetence? New, mainstream direction? Lack of time or resources?

I loved the game, but the mod seemed to add so much that I dont think the devs would have wber considered for fear of being too hardcore. Yet those features would make the base game really special in its scope and depth.

The long war mod seems to add things that I would think would make the game too complicated in the eyes of devs. I feel the options to customize your game to the degree of the long war mod really helped give that game legs for faithful fans, but is the goal to make a game that is more accessible first, is it due to devs not thinking of these mod ideas, or is it a matter of resources?

I'm ready for a new XCOM. Hell yes.

Also, a Vita port of Enemy Within.

Vita port would be tits, but we'll see about all that. I doubt it.

And yeah guys, I doubt they're going to sneakily launch something else I.E what you wanted. All signs point to XCOM.

Awesome if it's indeed a new XCOM, i've been wanting to go back to it for a while. I was actually willing to settle for an EW remaster or a Vita port.

Maybe all of the above? I should stress I love the vanilla game, even as I can recognize all the ways it falls short.

I can only guess that it was a very hard sell internally ("hey, we want to resurrect this forgotten turn-based, short-on-story isometric franchise that only hardcore PC players ever played"), and I don't think it was considered a AAA title, more of a side project. They may have more freedom with it this time.

Oh man, if it's a new XCOM I'll be very happy. I fucking loved Enemy Unknown.

Can't wait for the full reveal. Wonder if it'll be a direct sequel or something different. Too bad it doesn't look like they're going with a Terror from the Deep theme, though. Having never played the originals, I was kind of hoping for that. It seemed like a really cool setting.

This was rated in Brazil or something. I can't remember exactly how, but it's essentially a foregone conclusion this is being announced at E3. I wanna say it was under the name "XCOM: Enemy Within+"? This is almost guaranteed to be coming.

Well, if it's XCOM, I hope it isn't limited to only one city. It would be a big step back in scope, even if it's something Apocalypse did.

For everybody disappointed by a lack of Terror From the Deep, Jake Solomon (who is probably involved in this somehow) hates it for being a cheap reskin with absurd difficulty.

Yeah, you're right. It's called "XCOM Enemy Unknown Plus", and it's been updated in the last year. They also rated Civ Rev 2+.

The base game got the core gameplay loop down better than almost anything else in the entire generation of games. It is easily the slickest strategy game ever made. Its ruleset was simple and approachable, without a lot of exception to the rules and corner cases "bogging" things down or making encounters that would cause people to just quit the game in frustration.

The tradeoff for that clean ruleset and tight gameplay loop was that a lot of the "chrome" that gives flavor to the game was somewhat lacking. That's a reasonable tradeoff to make, but the real issue was that they didn't leave much in the way of editing tools so that PC players looking for a "next level" sort of experience could build one easily.

Thankfully, two fearless people did take up the challenge and Long War makes XCOM one of the best strategy games ever made.

No one cares about randomized maps? That's the main gripe I had with the first game. Once you played through it once or twice you generally knew what to expect and where to place your squad. Never played the expansions FWIW.

Just don't get too excited for Civ Rev 2, unless it's significantly different from the mobile version. That game is pretty bad.

Most people were unhappy with the lack of randomized maps but between engine constraints and the shit sandwich consoles the game also ran on it just wasn't happening.

I thought Enemy Within added a lot to the base game. There's a lot of new maps and you can also install Long War which strives for non-deterministic outcomes in all of the game's systems.

I wouldn't mind randomized maps, but 3D procedural generation and destructibility are hard to get right on their own, never mind in conjunction, especially in a franchise where accidentally or intentionally blowing through walls to get to aliens is a thing.

My problem with XCOM was the lack of flavor and flair. The core strategy was solid enough, with the exception of exposed aliens moving on your turn, which discouraged aggressive play (iono about Enemy Within). I'd take a sequel without too many new gameplay additions if they only gave it more personality.

Im down for more XCom, even if I do hate how that game handles fog of war.

As a console player, XCOM is really one of the only serious strategy games I've ever played. What's wrong with the way it handles it? I always felt like it was pretty effective for what it was aiming for.

If it's XCOM, please oh please oh please actually get some procedural generation in there. Or proper mod support.

Both were touted to a degree beforehand and then ignoooooored at every turn post-release.

If this is a new XCOM game (and dammit, it had better be), my guess is that EXALT wasn't destroyed and ended up making some big plays after you take down the Temple Ship.

From the XCOM wikia:

While not allied with the aliens, EXALT harbor transhumanist ideals and sympathize with the aliens' effort to evolve the human species; where others fear or resist the alien invasion, EXALT see it as their opportunity to acquire the resources they need to seize power. So, like XCOM, EXALT is operating in the shadows and endeavoring to recover alien technology and develop sophisticated human genetic modification protocols, but unlike XCOM, their ultimate goal is to establish a world government under their control.
