Splatoon | Review Thread

This has single player? And multiple modes that will get rolled out within like a week? And optional challenge modes if you buy the Amiibos. Do a little research before you go of kilter because some game in the past you like got slighted.

I'll never understand people genuinely wanting a game to do bad. That's not good for anyone.

Hold off there shooter, I'm not wishing ill will on this game. Just making a comment.

IGN whines about that it needs more content even though more content is already slated to be added in the coming months
Edit: I know they aren't reviewing what's not in the game yet, but they score they give it now is the score people are going to remember, not the score they might ive it after the new modes are added

You review the game they give you, not what's coming in a few months. That's totally fair.

Oh, it's antediluvian. It's of or belonging to the time before the biblical Flood.

I, for one, would be quite interested in the online proclivities of this time period's avid online gamers.

Antediluvian is the perfect word to use in place of archaic for this game *folds arms*

You can't deny that the statement is right though... Exagerated, but right.

Will give the game a go in August since it sounds fun and I want Nintendo to do new ips. But I do not like playing for early access games, and the way this game is launching is some similar unfinished shit.

I'd imagine this game would have been batting 9s easy if it launched with everything it will have by August?

Blasphemy, Shadowrun is legit one of the best MP games ever and we all know that.

I haven't really played Shadowrun so I can't comment. Just saying that numerical values don't always exist in vacuums, and overall feedback is worth considering. For example, the lack of a feature in one game could be an annoyance while in another game it could be the undoing of it.

That’s the kind of work Splatoon is doing: borrowing ingredients from numerous different recipes, throwing them into a pot together, and stirring until they stop feeling like separate ideas and begin to become unitary.

Splatoon, then, makes me optimistic about what games can do not with pastiche or duplication-as-serialization, but with sampling. We don’t have a genre convention to slot Splatoon into, and that’s a rare and wonderful thing.

This is what Nintendo and their partners excel at better than anyone. I'd argue that this was the approach to Super Smash Bros., Pikmin, Kid Icarus Uprising, W101, and even Xenoblade. They do a lot of genre/bending and blending to the point where new concepts begin to make sense and have their own feel despite being comprised of many old gameplay ideas.

Friday can't come soon enough, 5 maps is enough for me to begin with. I've been happy with the 4 testfires with 2 maps, lol.

Already got my copy booked and hopefully sent today.

After reading Jimquisitions review, I thought the whole "you can only enter multiplayer with one set of weapons" was a limitation of the Global Testfire Test version. I had no idea it was actually designed for the full game like that.

Think there is a slim chance Nintendo will revision this in an update, making you able to switch weapons between matches?

My gut says "lol no".

There's also the weird oversights with the online play (no loadout switching, no canceling out of matches after joining the lobby) to take into account. So who knows.

Calm down dude, not everyone is in the loop. I'm not as media obsessed about new and upcoming games anymore so yes, this is the first time i'm seeing this. But regardless of whether or not I saw it now or 2 months ago, 5 maps at launch is definitely a disappointment. Let's hope what you said about dlc maps is true.

Look here to see the screenshot of future DLC maps.

http://squidboards.com/threads/all-multiplayer-maps.148/

The current list at launch is
Urchin Underpass
Saltspray Rig
Blackbelly Skatepark
Walleye Warehouse
Arowana Mall

The others you see are the DLC.

Look at the Direct also

Kinda hard to get perspective on how few maps 5 is until you play.

The last FPS I enjoyed was Halo Reach and if you just gave me my 5 favorite maps I wouldn't have missed the rest, especially right at launch. I can't even recall more than 5 maps from that game.

The 5 maps thing isn't an either-or type situation. It's not like we either get 5 great maps or 10 mediocre ones. In fact, chances are high there's going to be a clunker among the five. There's almost never a case where all maps are as well liked.

Then the reviewer shouldn't use the word "IMPOSSIBLE"

Quick is a subjective term. Don't be pedantic.

Really disappointed in that. I thought that was just a problem with the testfire.

I wouldn't have a problem switching to a different weapon if someone is already filling that role. It's going to suck when you want to try out the charger or something and being the third charger on your team. That exact scenario happened to me in the testfire and that was one of the worst games I've ever had in any game ever.

I wouldn't want to be the third anything on any team.

Being stuck like that is.. ugh.

Anyways.. decent reviews so far.
Already preordered off the eShop and are ready to play.

Agreed. This doesn't even seem to be a conscious decision on the dev's part, but more of an oversight. Hopefully, this can be fixed with a patch. It doesn't dissuade my decision to buy, but it does make me wonder how rushed this game was to get it out the door.

Splatoon might just be more generally fun than Shadowrun, or generally better designed. Or just reviewed by different people.
That and the game has a pretty unique single player campaign.

I'm sure Splatoon is designed well, but Shadowrun was one of the best shooters of recent memory.

Im just glad they can be switched off, not everyone wants or likes motion controls, choice is a good thing

Yeah, that's totally cool. But to say that quick responses and adjustments are impossible is just plain wrong. I would even argue that motion controls make them easier if mastered. Still, it's good that they're optional.

The reviewer is probably only speaking for him/herself, which makes it a subjective thing.

But that's like doing a Halo review and listing "the lest responsive and accurace control scheme out there - and it's fucking mandatory" as a negative.

About the frequency of map updates, I assumed it would be one per week because the direct showed a total of nine upcoming maps, and that seems like it would be enough to last one per week until August. If they do it every other week or every few weeks, then there will most likely be at least two new maps per update

Ah, is this the part of the thread where we find the lower scores, lower being relative to the majority of good scores, and pick the review and reviewer apart for daring to feel differently?

I wrote that.
We're talking about an online game with no voice chat, no weapon swap between matches, no stats, no challenges and not even a button to cancel the matchmaking in 2015.
To me, that is really archaic, so "antediluvian" is ok. And it sounds totally legit in Italian, trust me. ;)

EDIT: Also no (custom) loadouts.

nope. it's complaining about the nintendo defence force™ time!

Not backing out of lobbies is weird.

No changing of loadout is also wierd

But atleast matches start immediately after one match is done.

Those features listed led to lots of downtime between matches in COD and BF but in Splatoon matches start in less than 5 seconds. Maybe that was the reason why they didn't add those features.

It is a tough tradeoff tho.

No loadout switching fucking sucks, but I'm sure they don't allow canceling out of the lobby to avoid people going in and out of lobbies, which would make it harder for them to fill up.

Everyone complaining about having only 5 maps - that isn't even the worst part. Having only 2 multiplayer modes is the real stinker.

Yep. It's a crazy low amount of maps and modes for a primarily online multiplayer game. If this was Battlefield or COD it would be getting crucified and be getting 6's in reviews. That said. I think the game looks super fun and I'll be picking it up. I do think there is a double standard with the reviews though.

Wait, in the full game you still have to jump out of the lobby to switch your weapons?!?

NINTENDOOOOOOOOO

Ugh, I can already tell launch is going to be painful due to archaic decisions, or possibly oversights.

Really hoping Nintendo takes many of these criticisms in stride and fix it for Splatoon 2.

Again, I'm not saying it is. I haven't played Shadowrun.

It's just that there's not much of a preset barometer, everything is rated in context of itself. Opinions change, reviewers change etc.

The "Nintendo gets a free pass" narrative that seems to have taken hold here is so strange to me. It's like those who pump it seem to be totally unaware of the irony that they post about it in threads in which half of the people are critical of something Nintendo is doing, or fail to realize that almost anything Nintendo does has been polarizing for a number of years now. Internet fan culture is so insular sometimes, it's almost like they aren't even aware of what's even going on around them at the time.

Yeah I can see that, I will try them, but if they don't click with me and using normal controls does I'm happy to switch to normal. If motions adds a ton to the gameplay that is lost with using normal controls, I may stick with them a bit longer, but if it's just a novel thing I'd probably prefer standard controls

I'm suddenly reminded of EA Battlefront arguments

For the record, I'm not in the camp of "Less Maps mean more polish for each and thus no bad maps"

I don't understand why people think these aren't valid criticisms.

Even so, I'm really happy to see Nintendo expanding into a new genre and with lots of Nintendo flair and style in a major new IP. I hope their odd choices regarding content and online functionality don't kill the community early - I want this to be a long term success.

Pretty impressive results for a new IP in a genre they haven't really tackled before. Reviews generally seem fair (lol at optional
superior
motion controls being a negative tho) regarding the content. Can only review what's available at launch. Though the scores clearly show a very solid base to work from.

Good stuff!

when this game will have all the content it's going to be absolutely amazing. Not entirely upset at the start, kind of like that all the levels and modes will be rolled out. Actually gives me more incentive to keep coming back.

We all knew we would have to deal with lots of those as soon as they announced no voice-chat.

Nintendo is always innovating on the gameplay side, but also downward thinking on other things, regularly (like online features).
