Splatoon | Review Thread

So, the non-gaming websites gave it high scores, but the non-gaming sites are going low, primarily because of the lack of voice chat and the fact that the game is unfinished.

I think I'm going to wait for a deal to pick it up. If the game is 80% done, I'm only going to pay 80% for it.

The game will be "finished" in a few months' time. Then you can pay 100% for a game that's "100%" done.

Or you can wait for a deal anyway, whatever floats your boat.

Depressing stuff.

Cute article otherwise, though. :)

Really says something about some people that you hear 10 year-olds bring up the same "Nintendo is for kids" arguments they do.

What's the BioGamerGirl verdict a.k.a the only verdict worth listening to?
I'm wondering this too - looks like the last Wii U review on the site was for Kirby back in February. Not that there have been many (any?) Wii U games to review since then. Hopefully she renders judgement on Splatloon today so we can all definitively know whether or not this should be a day 1 purchase!

no blood and cursing = not mature

funny how a 10-year-old's perception is strangely similar to many adult gamers as well

There's nothing odd about. Most people don't grow out of this mentality developed in Middle School/Junior High.

This behavior was observed with books and later on movies. Now it's videogames turn to experience the human condition.

Wished it was a video, the wording throws me off that it is a 10 year old.

I suspect it's been edited to make it a bit more readable and include some clarification (I don't think a 10 year old would naturally rattle off the phrase "Wii U motion controls", for instance!), but I'm happy to believe that the girl's intent is being represented accurately.

This bit is just adorable:

There’s a single-player area, a multiplayer arena, and a local competitive mode for two players. Which did you like most?

I liked online play the most, because you get to have a team. Which is great. I’m not the best player out there, and having a team I can rely on is great. I really like that. But it’s kind of a personal thing. I’d rather not get into it.

Oh?

Yeah. Let’s move on, dad.

Actually, this little girl is dispensing the truth bombs all over the interview:
I saw one person say, “I’m happy there’s no voice chat because if there were people would just tell me how much I suck.” I can kind of understand that.

The definition of front-butt.

You should quote the whole thing.

"Hmm. Interesting point. There’s no voice chat, and if there were I’d have disabled it because I don’t want you chatting with strangers online. But do you think being able to talk to other players using a headset would help you do better? Especially if they were your friends?

Yes. Because then I could make plans with my teammates, and that would help. But I can see why it’s not for everyone. When you go around the game plaza you can look at what people say in their Miiverse drawings. I saw one person say, “I’m happy there’s no voice chat because if there were people would just tell me how much I suck.” I can kind of understand that."

It looks like they both understand voice chat should be an option and not completely omitted, while understanding why someone wouldn't want it on.

I get tired of both sides of this silly argument. Playing mature games doesn't make you mature nor does liking games with no blood or cursing make you mature. The ratings only mean some content may not be suitable for certain age groups. I like to think of games like Eddie Murphy some people prefer R rated Eddie to family friendly Eddie or vice versa. I can appreciate stellar family friendly things like Shrek but lean towards the mature stuff.
I don't think splatoon would work as a mature game but I don't think it would hurt to include the standard options expected in today's online shooters.

wasn't really arguing anything, just making an observation

This is such a ridiculous post. "The people that don't like the game just didn't understand it and who cares about their opinion because they didn't play it the right way."

I'm saying the people who posted the lower scores were having problems no one else was experiencing, like problems with the controls and or how the gameplay operated and they took off the game's score because of their own problem.

Cons: Only two online modes, one of which is inaccessible for the first several hours. No customisation options, only five maps, and a largely superfluous story mode.

It's good to know most of the reviews 'cons' are being fixed over the summer. Seems really weird it's being docked points so many places when we already know we will be getting new maps bi-weekly for free over the summer.

They're reviewing the game the way it's being released. I guess games like KI shouldn't have been criticized for it's small roster of fighters since the game ended up getting more fighters later on. Or that Driveclub was a buggy mess, since it's been fixed.

*Sigh*

So I take it 90% of them are scalpers.

No, probably mostly Nintendo fans. Scalpers probably got what they wanted online or pre-orders. It's a lot easier to get them those ways, plus you're able to get a lot more in some cases since some places don't have limits per customer like Nintendo World does.

A quasi review from Canada's National Post (Financial Post) newspaper.

A guy interviews his 10-year-old daughter about her impressions of the game and first time playing an online shooter.

http://business.financialpost.com/f...st-online-competitive-shooter?__lsa=ff01-07d5

This kid is playing her first online shooter without voice chat, and she already fucking gets it:

Do you think you’d like to try a shooter that’s more of an every-player-for-themselves kind of thing?

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. As I explained before, dad, I like to have teammates I can rely on. That’s all I have to say about that.

What a squid.

10yrolds don't want to play it because Nintendo is for kids? That should be a selling point.

So a smaller online community is a selling point for a multiplayer tps? lol
It's not like you're going to hear anyone online since there's no VC for the game iirc

How did you even get anything about a smaller online community from that post?

Well, I think "10 year old kids don't want to play this" could be a selling point to adults...

Smaller online community or no..especially if the kids are the ones missing from the community.

I mean, for this game, sure it won't be a selling point, I welcome all the players.
But say if there was a CoD game that was on-par, feature wise, with the best of the CoD games, but 10 year olds didn't want to play it...that could be a selling point. lol

Woah, there. I wasn't trying to misrepresent anything or push an agenda. I just thought it was cool that a 10-year-old "gets" that you'll run in to people online that will give you abuse for being bad at a game, and is empathetic enough to understand why some people don't want it there (regardless of whether she agrees or not).

Less people playing a game means that'll it'll have a smaller community. So explain to me how that could be a selling point?

You should have used the other comparison chart instead. ;)

I'm guilty of this as well haha

I stopped playing pokemon at a certain point and never got back into it until the DS ones

I also went from the SNES to the PS1 to the Xbox and then I came home to the Wii
