Halo 5 - Game Informer details

So happy about free MP maps, even though that most likely means some form of microtransactions. Hopefully it'll just be the cosmetic armor stuff.

This is real. Cause I said so.

lol ...That would be some Gainax level trolling from 343I if they pulled something like that.

Is there a skill based ranking system and consistent starting abilities/gear?

Didn't play the beta. Still don't own an Xbox.

Is this a sequel to Halo in the way that Halo 4 wasn't?

MP wise most definitely in my opinion.

Even starts
No loadouts
No weapon drops/killstreaks or whatever
All players have the same abilities
Emphasis on Map control

Do we know what's in the collectors edition yet? I'm guessing it's Blue Team, but they couldn't announce it as their inclusion hadn't been revealed (or even teased) when the different versions of the game were announced.

the designs for these are really cool, master chief looks so dated compared to these designs. recon even looks good here.

the designs for these are really cool, master chief looks rather lame next to them.

Keep in mind that Chief's armor is likely of the much older variant, and not the newer, more fancy armor variants that are available. And btw, Chief's armor design is all kinds of badass. :)

Locke comes the closest to looking as great, but the Chief looks amazing.

Proba next week, pre-orders for Digital copies open next week.

I'm guessing it may be something fancy with Blue Team AND Fireteam Osiris.

ya i totally understand that angle but also i think they cant really fuck around too much cause die hard fans typically hate change.

but yah i just love these designs so i wanted to just bring it up again.

I think this gives them a good opportunity to do both.. we have our classic Blue Team and New/Change in Fireteam Osiris..

So the domain was never destroyed! Maybe the Floodcursors made it appear that way to make the Didact crazy. Just like they faked human resistance to the Flood.

  • Whether playing as Chief or Locke, you're accompanied by a fireteam of 3 A.I. which you can command/issue orders to in the campaign
  • Highlighting an enemy and hitting up on the D-Pad orders your team to assault an enemy
  • Other commands include picking up certain weapons, using turrets, driving warthog, etc
  • AI teammates can revive you as well

I'm liking what I'm reading here.

Spartan 4, but that's basically just a normal soldier in a Spartan suit. No augmentations like the other Spartans have, which makes them not nearly as powerful.

For reference: Halo 4 said it would take 10 Spartan 4's to beat one Spartan 2.

So many things wrong here.

1. The Spartan IV's have augmentations. They're detailed in Initiation and in New Blood.
2. It was never said it would take 10 Spartan IV's to beat one Spartan II
3. Frankie has been on the record saying a Spartan IV in GEN 2 armor is equal to a Spartan II in GEN 1.
4. Out of armor a Spartan II is superior.

That's about it.

Man I'm concerned by those campaign details. 3 AI people with you at all times? Issuing them orders and stuff. Confirmation that you play as Locke.

Ehhhhhh

Yeah they are very sleek, i like them. Especially Tanaka's armor, which looks almost Covenant like in design.

Getting a republic commando vibe with those 3 ai at all times which sounds awesome.

We need more games like republic commando.

343I hired the creative director from that game recently.

Here's some tidbits from this month's GI issue. A lot more in the magazine: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/...y-cover-revealed-halo-5-guardians-923520.aspx

  • Confirmed: Linda, Kelly, and Fred join the Chief
  • Game starts out before Chief is on the run
  • Audio has been heavily reworked from the ground up for Xbox One (bullet sounds, debris, etc)
  • 8 months after Halo 4 ends, cataclysmic events are tearing apart star systems, these are tied to the Guardians (Forerunner entities shown in the first teaser trailer)
  • Game Informer played the second mission, taking command of Chief and Blue Team to take back an ONI research vessel abandoned for 2 years
  • Locke's team is described as having more advanced tech than Blue Team, members use the "ATS" (Artermis Tracking System) on their armor to bring out points of interests in levels
  • Team banter replaces interactions with Cortana to flesh out the characters
  • There are multiple routes to take in levels/multiple ways to tackle objectives
  • Difficulty scales to the number of co-op players
  • The zealous religious Covenant are slowly abandoning Jul M'dama's leadership from Halo 4
  • Spoilers:
Cortana's silhouette is seen by the Chief after he's separated from Blue Team, she says: "John, the domain is open. Meridian is next. You only have 3 days, John. The Reclamation is about to begin."
  • XBL Gold is not required for online co-op.
  • Halo 5 will launch with over 20 multiplayer maps
  • 15 DLC maps by June 2016
  • All maps will be free
  • Teases a "completely new, epic multiplayer experience" they'll reveal at E3. Incorporates "all aspects of the Halo sandbox for the first time ever"
  • This MP experience is described as a "dream of ours and all our fans to build something like this"

Fucking hyped beyond belief! All of the campaign stuff sounds fantastic so far... I am about to piss my pants in excitement!

Finally got to read through the article. I can't wait to see this game in motion. I think the screens look great especially considering it'll be at 60fps.

We had confirmation we would play as Locke months ago and I honestly don't see what's wrong with it. It's giving us a view of the Halo universe from a perspective that's not the Chief. As great as the Chief is, he's not the only important character in the Halo universe and certainly shouldn't be the only character a perspective should be told from.

The team part I'm kind of iffy on, but I think it'll be a fun new feature.

Free DLC maps is cool. But it has the same impact the Wii U having a friends list did. It's a given nowadays.

Is it? Do most major console franchises also have free DLC maps? Besides Evolve, I wasn't aware of any other gaming series that has championed it on consoles. I wouldn't even include Evolve as a "major gaming franchise" but it was the only one in recent memory that made a big deal about it. I'm sure other, smaller franchises have done it but I just couldn't think of any huge franchise that has really done it before now.

Huh? I can think of a few games that have free map DLC, but it's by no means the norm.

Doesn't that reinforce what Akai was pointing out though? That means that you would need to handicap a Spartan II for a IV to stand a chance.

Some Spartan II's were also integrated into the IV program so they no doubt have Gen II variants of their old armor and I wouldn't doubt that they've updated Chief's as well since he will have all of the abilities the Spartan IVs have. A IV wouldnt stand a chance against a II. You also need to consider that it's not just the augmentations and armor that make the II's so lethal.

especially after how poorly Halo 4s DLC was handled. i liked most of those maps but after buying them i rarely played them online

I agree. I am looking forward to playing more maps. I hope they have a better rotation system in place as well so we're not stuck playing the same two maps over and over.

Yea that's something I'm looking forward to. I want to see the whole suite of maps going forward and not just a few that seem to always show up or when in voting you have 3 options and 2 are the same map with different game types.

My buddy made a good point when I told him the DLC news earlier. This takes a map pack pass off the table, so we're really wondering what's going to be the in LE.

Please be a campaign DLC pass. I want a significant amount of post release support with maybe flashback missions of Blue Team.

This sounds like a pretty awesome shift, and would be an amazing change for Microsoft to push at e3. Having to pay for PS4 and not for Xbox would be crazy hilarious.

I doubt Microsoft would go this far, but this would be one of the few things that would drastically shift momentum in Microsoft's favor (to the internet crowd, anyway).

It really I guess depends on if Microsoft believes they can make Xbox Live enticing enough to gamers without the multiplayer aspect. If they have something else up their sleeves with regards to XBL (maybe in conjunction with Windows 10) then perhaps they could go the free multiplayer route? I still very much doubt it, especially since only online co-op was announced as not requiring gold.

EDIT: I'm responding to an old quote in this thread, so I guess that's what I get for having two tabs open on different pages. =P

No it doesn't because we really don't know if GEN 2 would have the same effects on a Spartan II that it would have on a Spartan IV. The whole purpose for GEN 2 was to compensate for the the IV's not undergoing augmentations as extensive as the previous generations of Spartans. If a II is put in it then it essentially means nothing considering the armor is only supposed to boost physical stats to the point where the Spartan is on par with a Spartan II.

The only II's left are Naomi and the ones from Blue Team and they're not in the IV program. Red Team could still be alive, but seeing as they're MIA (last seen drifting aboard the SoF) it's clearly evident they're not in the Spartan IV program. The same goes for Gray Team.

And Chief's armor isn't GEN 2 nor is the rest of Blue Teams. That's evident from the new information we got today where it was said that Locke's team has armor more advanced than that of Blue Teams.

It feels like Halo is being crushed by the weight of it's lore. The first game was some pulpy space adventure, but after that the franchise began to take itself way too seriously.

Fall of Reach detailed how children from all over the UNSC were kidnapped and turned into weapons to use in the fight against the Insurrectionists, and came out before CE. This isn't new, it's just finally being embraced.

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer...I love free stuff and today's overall news was pretty great...but just don't get your hopes up on the news regarding the 35 maps.

I'm a huge Halo fan, but here's my concern. Many of those 20 Launch + 15 DLC maps will be either remixes or maps specifically/exclusively for The Breakout mode.

I think everyone should just be aware of that before their hype/expectations go through the roof and they end up criticizing 343i a year from now for "lying".

Fall of Reach was a surprisingly good book as well, fun read.

Call me crazy but i think the best mp games have a limited but we'll fleshed out map selection. 35 sounds like overkill.

This happened with 4 and left too many in the dark. Well, it did with me anyway.

I'm hoping lessons were learnt, I'm predicting 5 will be a much simpler but more engaging ride.
