Horizon: Zero Dawn Trailer (Guerrilla, post-apocalyptic pre-historic adventure)

Graphics look fantastic and I love me bow mechanics but...

I personally just wished for regular Dino's. Mech Dino's kinda lost it for me.

To me the mech concept does not match the setting. Will be keeping an eye on.

I think if it were real dinos it'd feel generic and like a cash-grab riding on Jurassic World's success. Plus the story seems to take place far after the end of our current civilization, so real dinosaurs wouldn't suddenly reappear.

This'll be a day one purchase for me, no question. Interesting note: I got a serious Vekta vibe from the city that was shown, and some Helghast vibes from the eyes on the dino mechs. I doubt this game is connected at all with Killzone, but interesting stylistic choices abound.

I like a lot of games spanning most genres. Also note that while I complained about all the superficial stuff, I'm willing to forgive most of it if the game play actually is good.

some games I really like: re4, metroid prime, the soulsborne games, dota, symphony of the night, civ-series, puyo puyo, metal gear rising, persona series, arma series, ico and shadow of the colossus..

there's a lot more of course.

anyway, I can't be the only one who didn't feel that cheap world music?

Please NEVER EVER mention game with voice acting after you bring up RE4, MGR and PRIME. Like never. wow

And what exactly is generic about its art style? Do you just not know how else to explain why you dont like it?

So pleased to see the reaction this game is getting. It was my best new IP of E3 so far, and I wasnt a big fan of the gameplay of killzone 3 (though it was graphically stunning at times)

Big enslaved vibe (under rated game IMO) from it, but being open world RPG + PS4 quality graphics means I am looking forward to it more than I would a enslaved 2.

so it's a post-historic game

Glad to see this thread has real traction.

Would have been a sin to have Horizon buried under the rubble of announcements. But I was a fantastic showing that I think it turned quite a few heads. Game of show so far.

I'm still piecing this goodness all together, but would it make sense to assume the dinosaurs are "the singularity", if you will? That is, robots which can improve and create newer versions of themselves?

That would look far more generic though. This adds to the game's delightfully distinctive visual look that very effectively separated itself from all the other showings at the conference. It's so out there and different and I love it. Plus it allows for some really really cool designs like those Disc head prontosaurus things. I understand that these things are really subjective but thank fucking god that they're not just normal dinos.

So far this has been the game of the show for me.

Disliked her moaning, groaning and talking over the action though, the voice doesn't really fit.

Also hesitant on how Guerrilla is going to handle the story and charactarization, it's a serious weak spot for them.

Looking forward to more information on what the game actually is.

I thought this too as they panned over the city and even some of the dinosaurs reminded me of Killzone robots and vehichles.

As Helgans struggled against the oppressive, poisonous atmosphere of vekta, machines thrived, became self aware and replicating, eventually taking over the planet. Early machines metabolized the toxins in the air to survive and created a habitable atmosphere, similar to plants on earth. Unable to adapt, nothing of the Helgans remained but small hunter gatherer groups amoung a planet ruled by machines that have robot sex and genetic diversity somehow

Boom. Universes connected.

I thought this looked promising.

I am just concerned it looks better than it plays. Combat and movement looked a little generic/floaty for me to get more hype :)

and the mechs with the setting is an interesting choice.

I saw a similar post-apocalyptic game in development in another Amsterdam game studio back in 2012, in which "modern" society had fallen and due to an error in human bio engineering, human lifespan was limited ; thus creating a post apocalyptic world ruled by tribes of adolescents. - basically the story goal of the game was to regain the long-term gen again with the aid of the last existing "modern society man".

This game reminds me of that, but I can't say I am a fan of either concept - and since I saw it in 2012 in that other Amsterdam game studio, this Horizon game doesn't strike me as really original either .

This was rumored to be an open world rpg right? Didn't quite seem like an rpg game. I'm wondering if it's open world still.

Hermen Hulst called it a open world action rpg so it is still all those things they will give us more info about crafting and its rpg elements at a later date.

Horizon reminds me a mix of Tomb Raider (the reboot games) and Monster Hunter…

I love the graphics/art design and I can’t wait to see more gameplay…

I guess this game is planned for 2017 release?

In an industry that churns out a lot of the same ole same ole, we have people complaining about mechanized dinosaurs. That gameplay reveal looked great, and showed stealth, hunting and strategy. The weak points weren't so obvious and it seems there will be specific ways to take down each machine. The fact that its an open world RPG with:

-day/night cycle
-weather systems
-Monster Hunter gameplay aspects
-Writer of Fallout NV
-stealth
-Witcher devs
-Enslaved/ Dark Earth/Turok vibe
-female protagonist
-tribes and factions (which leads me to believe there will be human vs human combat)

is a breath of fresh air. Color me impressed.

Well, considering they started working on the game 5 years ago, I cant really say which concept came first.. Especially when you dont even mention the name of the game from the Amsterdam studio.

She was aiming for the green canisters. Which seem to fill up when the animals are eating the grass. So it could be a food or some other sort of resource

What's weird is they are clearly wearing furs though, so there must be organic animals around too.

Im going to guess that the dinosaurs eat then anaerobically ferment the food into alcohol for use as fuel.

People need to stop saying this. Again, they got New Vegas' writer to pen the plot for this game along with some of Witcher 3's scenario writers. I wouldn't worry about plot for this game with the talent they were able to get.

I believe the subtitle is because they intend to make it a franchise. Having a subtitle out of the gate allows for a set of stories that aren't necessarily directly related to be used for sequels. It avoids the "sequel? but I haven't played the first" thing and "why is there a subtitle on this second game? is this a spin off?".

I actually really like it, also. Give the impression something huge is about to happen in the game.

Probably not the first person to say this, but the narrative in the trailer talking about the great cities fading away and being replaced with new life is almost like it's describing gg growth as a developer. Especially with the cities looking like those from Killzone

This all sounds incredible. I didn't know this game has weather and day/night cycles. This just gets more and more promising.

AMX-games

It seems they're defunct by now.

Their game was still in development december 2012, but they had a full comic book
which outlined the story premise of their game. Especially the intro with fallen decrepit city scapes and tribes living in wildlife, seems almost 100% identical.

Basically, you'd have these clans of adolescent tribes ( since no human would reach adult age ) and along the player's quest, you'd slowly find your way to the last surviving 'modern age' man - so the goal was to give humanity its full life span back.

It said 2016 at the end of the trailer, but no month announced yet.

Thanks for this info!

I completely missed that part on the Sony presentation and Hermen Hulst in his recent interview on Geoff Kindley told that they are targeting a 2016 release date!

Now the only thing that remains is time to slowly pass by… :(

One of the best debuts for an exclusive title I've seen in a while. Looks stunning and the gameworld I'm really digging too. All in perfect showcase.

I don't think this will connect with Killzone. The city and some of the machines just look similar cause it's the same artists and engine. You can tell by looking at it that it's a Guerrilla game even though it's not Killzone.

A competent director would spark more confidence.

Guess we'll just have to see when the game is done.

Where would regular dinos come from in a future Earth where a highly technological human society has collapsed?

So what you saw was basically a combination of the NZ TV show, The Tribe, and Logan's Run?

And what exactly is generic about its art style? Do you just not know how else to explain why you dont like it?

what bothered me about va in this trailer/demo was the constant talking. hopefully in the real game any va will be limited to npc interaction and cut-scenes.

i've been into digital art creation, 3d modelling and stuff like that since the nineties. Over the years I've been a member of various communities and spent a lot of time looking at concept art, behind the scenes stuff and so on. one thing I've come to recognize over the years is a distinct, generic concepting style that is extremely prevalent in western movie production and since 5-10 years back increasingly so in games as well. I'd describe it as a generic aesthetic with shallow artistic vision devoid of any personality.

The concept of robo dinos and the post historic world building looks original enough but the aesthetic is still the typical kit bashed "cool sci fi" concept art factory stuff. it's deviant-arty just a bit more polished.

I don't like it because even if the concept of the world is different, the aesthetic and style is identical to what I've seen a million times already. it's exactly what I'd expect it to be and that leaves me disappointed.

even if I don't like the art it's usually not a priority for me though, it's just sad.

Maybe it's the opposite...? Robots used to be super advanced, but as time went by they devolved into giant beasts, just like mankind went from high tech weapons to bows and spears. Dunno how they'll justify it, but it's a fascinating concept.
