Horizon: Zero Dawn Trailer (Guerrilla, post-apocalyptic pre-historic adventure)

I was thinking about the whole concept of the game, and I have the strong impression that Horizon actually is happening on Killzone's universe, but 1000 years in the future, after ISA and Helghasts destroyed each other in an apocalyptic war.

The first similarity I saw, it was obviously the colors and some similarity on the machine design

KILLZONE3.jpg

Observe like we have Blue animals, with the same blue we see in the ISA army.

Now, this is a Killzone's Drone, from ISA, it has some animal characteristics, like a bird.

now backing to Horizon, we can see the other "faction" machines, with the same red eyes from helghasts...

And here we have the Helghast drone, maybe a machine on its very initial stage of evolution.

We also have giant enemies in Killzone, which has animals similarities.

The own city that we see at the begining of the Horizon's trailer, remembers the city of Shadow Fall.
I think ISA and Helghasts destroyed each other with some new letal weapows, Inteligen Machines, and only this machines survived to the Apocalypse... and after 1000 years of IA evolutions turned them on what we see in horizon.

"Zero Down" maybe refers to the point where something happend, which exterminated that civilization.

What do you guys think of this crazy theory?

Have to say i was impressed when i saw this at the conference. Female lead, great sound and graphics. But then you think about how they say its 'open world rpg' and thats the thing i think people havent grasped yet, and once they do this is gonna shoot up the top of everyone's list. Combine the level of graphical and gameplay polish of a linear game with an open one and you got great potential.

Eh, it's a stretch.

I'd say it's so that their designers (who are used to designing mechs & sci-fi machinery/armor) can stretch their legs, while still having a good foundation to work on, instead of now having to research how shaders for dinosaur skins work.

ugh I hate that all of the white in the game is off-white leaning warm, even in the mountain clouds. Gonna have to color correct this to hell because perfect white or cool tone white is the only way to be.

I'd say most of it comes from the fact that it was designed by the team that made the first three Killzone games

I wouldn't be surprised if they want to leave Killzone in the past and erase their image as the "Killzone studio", despite what they've said

This game seems real cool and really its about damn time SCE took a crack at a Western RPG.

And I liked the opening trailer. Real good set up for the world. Wonder if you will ever play in the "modern day" city they had in it because it seemed pretty detailed for something just used in a trailer to establish the world. Could easily just be there because they really wanted to go all out for the big reveal though.

The Zero Dawn subtitle really isnt working for me though.

Yeah red eyes just seems to be the color that denotes attack or a threat is nearby. Those gazel mechs had blue eyes that quickly turned red when the canister was shot showing a threat was around. That watchers eyes went from blue to yellow when it entered search mode.

So yeah the eye color isn't pointing toward anything I don't think. Interesting thought no doubt

Are you telling me I can go anywhere in this area?
This is too much.

I kinda don't believe it at this point as not even open world masters let their world look that true to scale. They always screw it up by littering it with some camps and houses or POI, or they just plain don't make it big enough.

I don't think so, remember, this game was developed in parallel with Killzone Shadowfall. I think Guerrilla will simply be a 2 game studio from this point on.

The thing is, though, the game takes place on Earth. I think we just see some similarities because this developer has almost exclusively worked on Killzone for over a decade.

I don't think so, remember, this game was developed in parallel with Killzone Shadowfall. I think Guerrilla will simply be a 2 game studio from this point on.

My personal guess of their future pipeline is something like this :

Amsterdam Team B : Killzone Shadowfall
Cambridge : RIGS
Amsterdam Team A : Horizon
Cambridge + Amsterdam Team B : new Killzone (Cambridge on SP, Amsterdam on MP)
Amsterdam Team A : Horizon 2

A game called "Horizon" already exists. Subtitle is likely for copyright reasons.

They may also want to avoid having "numbered" sequels, for one.

The ideal is always if you can have a strong brand that doesn't need a "number" behind to signify that it's a mothership game in the franchise, unless you're say Final Fantasy where every game is a 'new world.'

Guerrilla has never been a favorite developer of mine. I was never a big fan of the Killzone series, although I felt it had potential (mostly never utilized).

But this is... wow. They really should have been allowed to work on non-Killzone shit for a long time. If they can nail the mechanics, it legitimately might be one of the best open world RPG/action games of all time. I adore Monster Hunter, and that's one of their main inspirations? I actually left the MH series because I was tired of it being stuck on last-gen systems tech-wise. So this is amazing. Be still, my steady heart.
I love seeing posts like this. I like Guerrilla a lot and it's great to see people who haven't been fans of their previous work getting excited for this. I really hope they pull it off because coming out of E3, I can't stop thinking about this game.

The sequels thing is my bet (that's how the Pirate's of the Caribbean film titles were conceived), but it does't hold up. You can easily give the first one the standard title and add subtitles for the sequels without numbers. And then we have the horrible Uncharted system with both subtitle and numbered sequels ugh

Ideally, the first game would also have a subtitle of it's own. IMO.

I am so happy for GG. This game had been getting nonstop praise since the E3 reveal. I sincerely hope this proves to be a massive success for them. I can't wait to play it and I'd love to see this become a string franchise for them. Congratulations GG! Yall stole the show.

They're not connected in story. It's just the same artists continuing to work in their style, on a different subject matter this time.

Why are people so surprised that you can go to these far out locations in an open world game? If Guerrilla is saying you can go there, you can go there. The same with GTA, the same with Elder Scrolls, the same with a lot of open world games. I'm not understanding the doubt here.

I don't know why people always want to make definitive connections between games from the same developers. I'm sure there will be a couple of Killzone Easter Eggs but nothing more than that.

The trademark for Horizon already exists and it has existed before SCE filed for "Horizon: Zero Dawn"

Are you not going to play the game because of a subtitle?

Because this game would be the greatest looking open world on consoles and would rival some of the advancements that were praised in AC Unity, yet in a huge scale that looks like on-location film landscape in all its alluring scale. Scale that isn't captured in that quality in any wilderness we've ever seen in an open world.

It's just hard to believe an FPS dev is going to break the mold that significantly on their first crack at open world

I think people are burned by the famous Destiny, "we could go up that mountain if we wanted to"

Different tastes I suppose, but I'll always opt for minimalism

I'm picky about details like that (hence having a couple of examples at the ready), but of course I won't skip a game over it.
I think people are burned by the famous Destiny, "we could go up that mountain if we wanted to"

Destiny is full of incredible sky boxes and fake horizons that looked great and were untouchable, so yeah, that is a thing we think about

The Zero Dawn subtitle really isnt working for me though.

They already said you will be able to explore untouched ruins, the cities are the ruins.

I've never been one to think just because a developer is used to making a certain kind of game means they can't excel at something new. I also think these consoles, especially the PS4 are just vastly underrated by people in what they are capable of. The power and technology jump from last gen on both consoles is huge coming from the PS3 and 360. There's also the fact that this is coming from a first party dev that is known for its technical prowess.

I think people are burned by the famous Destiny, "we could go up that mountain if we wanted to"
I understand that. That bait and switch was BS, but that was also Destiny, a game that I don't even think is actually open world.

I wonder if there will be dungeons / puzzle solving like in Zelda. Probably not, but would be very cool if this game had a Zelda/Metroid structure coupled with monster hunting.

They've hired excellent external talent to ease the transition. If a large part of working in an unfamiliar genre is having talented leadership overseeing development, then GG is prepared.

The machines seem to all have blue and red eyes. Blue is the relaxed mode and red is attack or high alert.

Watching the trailer again the only thing that seemed odd and out of place were the clipping issues with the anchor lines. Really hope they fix that.

It's Earth though, as someone already pointed out. Could be the Earth of the Killzone universe, in which case maybe the "approaching storm" that Aloy says she senses at the end of E3 demo is actually the Helghast returning from across the gulf of space to reclaim their ancestral home...DUN, DUN, DUUUUNNN...

When the biggest complaint for your new IP is the subtitle, you did good. I hope we see more at PGW and PSX(yeah no way that is not happening again)

In Killzone, Earth
was home to worldwide nuclear war, which forced countries to explore space and colonize foreign planets, setting up the Killzone games, so it couldn't take place on Earth

early in the fight, the dino had some flying drone shooting laser from above, but we never see them again after that, I wonder what's going on there.
