Not surprised Polygon messed up such a basic tweet, but for such an important figure in there industry.....what an insult, he deserves much better than that. I have no doubt there will continue to be an outpouring of love from throughout the industry.

RIP Iwata san. Seeing some of these stories from NOA employees shows why he was such a wonderful boss and a great person. We often get so involved with how a company is doing financially or their output of games and forget that these are human beings interacting with other human beimgs. I hope the future of Nintendo will lead in Mr. Iwata's footsteps and keep the positive energy and happiness Mr. Iwata nurtured.

I'll always remember Nintendo's games picking me up during some of my most difficult times in life and the joy I get from remembering my childhood with the N64 and Gamecube. Iwata played a huge role in all of that, and for that I am grateful.

It's probably been said already, but does anyone else find it really sad that the last thing we heard from him publicly outside of shareholders, was that he was sorry that he let us all down at E3?

Whoa.

I grew up with Mario and my son did too. The countless hours we spent with the Mario Galaxy games are moments I'll never forget for as long as live - and it was all thanks to him.

I'm speechless.

Rest in peace Iwata-san.

Wow, had literally no feeling this was ever even going to happen. So sudden. RIP Iwata you will be sincerely missed.

Yup, his company birthed this whole thing.

Not to be a dick but you're wrong. That company was Magnavox and the system was the Odyssey.

Just being historically accurate here.

He was young at 55; biliary cancer is bad though. He never looked that sick though ;he hid it very well.

It will be interesting to see how Nintendo moves on with new leadership, he seemed like a strong willed guy with regards to leadership (my way or the highway). He was a real character ( and a likeable one) in an industry with a lot of unlikeable people( who seem to exist only to fleece gamers) and will be missed. It is a sad day for gaming.

Got a feeling NX might be further out than we expect now. Could have been to show Nintendo is planning long term and not reliant on key individuals.

Makes me wonder who's going to lead Nintendo going forward. I assume Miyamoto will step up in the meantime, but long-term it's anyone's guess. Satoru Shibata, perhaps? Tatsumi Kimishima? Reggie?

I knew he had struggled with cancer, but I thought he was recovering well. This just came out of nowhere. RIP, Mr. Iwata, and thank you for all you've done for the industry. He changed it for the better, and it won't be the same without him.

RIP Iwata. Put smiles on millions of people across the globe. A feat very few men ever accomplish.

With that said, Any idea on the fallout?

Iwata always pushed for their properties to remain on nintendo controlled platforms. The board eventually pressured him into the Dena deal. Iwata also ushered in the blue ocean hardware strategy of not competing via specs but with innovation thus making the Wii the highest selling nintendo platform.

Dont even know what direction Nintendo will go from here

This is what I'm wondering.

Hiroshi Yamauchi saw Satoru Iwata as the man that would lead Nintendo into the next century. Irreplaceable person and leader.

Soo much to process. Wish none of this was true.

Yeah. Iwata was living and breathing Nintendo. Yamauchi handpicked him because he fully understood what this company is about. Can´t even start to imagine how it will be without him. Goodbye Iwata san. We will miss you.

Damn, that was unexpected. I always liked watching Iwata speaking, his Engrish was so charming. Nintendo Directs will never be the same.

R.I.P.

Wow, RIP Mr. iwata. Nintendo really kept his illness under wraps from shareholders. He looked somewhat Ok, but deep down he had terminal cancer and went out the way he wanted which was working as the CEO. Reminds me of a Canadian politician that recently won opposition status for his party only to pass away 2 months after the election, with terminal cancer.
