Splatoon update Aug 6th - Team Ranked, custom game, level/ranked cap raise, new gear

It looks like it adds a little bit of everything.
New stages, and I think new music was mentioned as well. Plus a higher level cap, new clothes, and that gatling gun. Wow!

This sounds exactly like what I imagined in my head. Nope, can't be right, there has be catch, Splatoon getting online options right is unbelievable.

Update is looking great, but the grind to level 50 sounds loooong. Also I'm wondering how the Ika Musume costume is going to work out, seeing as it's only announced for Japan. Will that even be in this update?

I love that you can make duos to match up with other duos. It's perfect for my sister and me!
Local multiplayer isn't possible online. Not only do you need the GamePad for online (granted, the Wii U can support 2 GamePads, but it cuts the GamePad framerate in half & Nintendo hasn't used the feature as of now), it'd cut the framerate of the game in half (down to 30fps).

I hope they keep the 2 map rotation. I've only played 28 hours so far so it's nice to be able to keep repeating the same two maps when I get on, especially when the new maps come out and it's possible to play the new one over and over to learn it and see how people are playing on it. Wouldn't mind them setting the rotation to every 2 hours instead of every 4 hours though.

In games with map voting sometimes a lot of maps never get picked.

Private matches are here now to take care of allowing everyone to play their favorite map though :)
god im glad most people don't think like you. the map rotation is beyond dumb. and private lobbies dont fix the problem at all, what if you dont have friends to play with

All Splatoon's missing is LAN support & voice chat with friends.
About LAN, it seems we get someyhing close:

Private Battle: Two to eight friends can battle together in customizable matches. Private Battle also allows players to hold small-scale custom tournaments using up to 8 Wii U consoles and games on a single Internet connection.

Well I agree with him.

Have those restrictions been confirmed?

Based on this image, I'm pretty sure the settings are barebones and are pretty much only the mode, the map, and the teams.

Woah, there we go. I don't think people linked to the nintendo.com article yet have they.

Well, is that or a voting system, and if you ever played a online fps with voting system you know how bad it can get, basically I only see de_dust2 whenver I play CS:GO.

I kind of agree with him. I was all for the 3-map rotation until I played during the splatfests. kind of waters down how you pick your weapons and gear.

I'm 100% fine with the map rotation now that private matches are on the way. I still say the time should be shortened to 2 hours instead of 4, but other than that it's nice to just hop on and there's the maps.

Of course it helps that I like almost all the maps.

Big fan of the forced map rotation, though 4 hours seems excessive. Maybe 2 would be better.

Still, I understand and approve of the reasoning. Fucking HATE map votes

or random match rotation where you can pick your weapons in the lobby, oh wait you cant do that either. I love this game but the problems it has are pretty bad and its community is incredibly apologetic to what ever problem it has.

I'm gonna assume they're gonna include all the new maps they're gonna unlock later in this big update download, just so they can easily unlock them like they've been doing with all the new maps so far. This is probably gonna mean dataminers are gonna spoil all the upcoming stuff soon after the update as well, I wonder how much there will be.

Level 50 is pretty crazy though, might have to no-life this game again.

The community being active doesn't mean that people haven't had their fair share of criticism towards what Splatoon does. It's not perfect. Everyone realized this long ago and most people still have their fair share of critique.

Doesn't mean that some things this game did was made from a conscious design perspective that in some cases paid off. To act as if the issue is that people are just apologetic about it strikes me as silly. You don't have to agree with it but there's no point in assuming things about the people playing the game.

I don't think Octolings will be added just because so much effort will be required to fit headgears to their model. How would an octoling wear a beanie? Too much effort for something cosmetic that doesn't really fit the current setting. Maybe in the sequel.

may be have them have an special ability or something so we cannot equip anything in the head? that would pretty much solve the problem

that, or a head gear that swaps the head model of a inkling for a octoling

Pants instead of headgear maybe?

Though again, personally I think it's too much work that could be spent on making the current inklings more customizable.

I wonder if Urchin is particularly broken with the bucket weapon type (which is apparently new and isn't on disc). I doubt it's a coincidence that Urchin is being changed when we're getting a massive update.

is there an upcoming testfire in japan or something? was there mention of the voicechat??

Japan's having a week-long testfire period to bring in kids who are just starting their summer vacation. Voice chat was listed as a feature on some kind of page related to it, either on the eshop or Nintendo's website, but it was quickly removed.

I don't think so since Urchin Underpass chokepoint always sucked, but if anything it's probably the gatling being even more effective at applying pressure in lanes making the chokepoint even worse.

Huh. That's kind of crucial.

Holy shit, these additions. I'm so fucking excited. Especially for new gear. Fashion has been like half my motivation for playing the game. I need new goals, lol.

Also, love that they're straight up adding new weapon types.

Yes, but wouldn't colors etc be part of the "team". They already announced that it can be set to things like 2 vs. 3, so why not color options as well?

New Japanese Testfire 3rd to 9th of August, 1 hour each day. The first description of the app download on the Japanese eShop apparently had voice chat listed, but it was removed quickly by Nintendo.

It's still a less-than-ideal set-up, but given that Nintendo seems to want this game to have some tournament potential, I feel like this will go a long way. I doubt many random people will ever use this feature beyond 1v1, but for the competitive scene, I imagine this is a great addition.

Can this information be added to the OP?

At least when it comes to maps I don't think there any left on disc.

Yeah, all that's left on the disc as of right now are the Rainmaker mode, about 20 weapons and a bunch of gear. It looks like we're about to get that gear and a lot of those weapons with this August update.

Nintendo will have to start releasing new stuff for us to download soon...

Oh that's interesting, I thought the testfires were over now that the game is released, guess they use it now as a mean for promotion of the game

no, I thinking something quick that could potentially solve the problem, for example a simple headgear which changes the head for a octoling with their sounds, that's pretty quick and wouldn't change much..

pants would need a lot of work just to make the dozens of equipment to be even worth

EDIT: or may be they are just saving this for a big feature in splatwoon

The (pseudo) LAN Support is interesting, though for some reason I fear lag could happen. I don't know how or why, nor even know enough about servers to understand if it's impossible, but I still have my worries.

At least though, it means that the Splatoon truck at FanExpo in Toronto will have some intense tournaments which I highly look forward to.

But come on...VOICE CHAT. Good God, it's pretty bad in Smash/Kart when you can't shittalk your friends in the middle of a battle/race, you have to wait until you're waiting in the lobby. Hopefully we'll get an autumn update or something that includes voice chat to co-ordinate your team...maybe it'll be a Christmas miracle?

GAF has a community thread for splatoon that is very active, there is also reddit and other boards, plus online clans for splatoon. Seems like it should be pretty easy to find people to play with.

Regarding being glad who thinks like me or not, I guess it only really matters what the devs think and they don't seem to be planning on getting rid of the rotation system any time soon? I know there's spots for 3 but that seems to have been used for Splatfest.

I know all of this. My sister has her own WiiU and doesn't live with me. We've been playing together via "with friends" several times a week.

This is the same structure that they use with their demo builds, it has little to do with the servers that host Splatoon, and is just using a centralized hub (your local network) to connect the WiiUs to one another. The game will also still be connected to the internet to track your kid's progress/stats/gear. You won't be P2Ping across unknown lengths of fiber, you'll be P2Ping over LAN. The rest is just data checks with the server that hosts stats and such for Splatoon, since it doesn't have dedicated servers as far as I am aware.

Oh yeah, more good news from the nintendo.com article.

The update is actually coming out on August 5th for NA folks. Rejoice!

It should work similarly to LAN in halo MCC, as long as the Internet connection is steady and the Nintendo Network isn't having issues it will be fine. Splatoon is p2p so one of the LANed Wii Us will be elected as the game server and the match should play with very low latency as long as all players are in the LAN.

It's nice to see Nintendo call this out, I hope that means NOA is pushing for real LAN support.
