No Man's Sky - 18 minute uninterrupted gameplay demo

Sorry we couldn't get the release date, but it's out of my control.

And for those who thought the month "sucked" or was "90% regurgitated," I'd respectfully disagree. We had a LOT of interesting new footage this month that made our content more than worth checking out. If you didn't enjoy the coverage then all I can say is, "Well, you can't please everyone." Maybe you'll like our next IGN First. :)
The footage was new but they didn't really give new details if you've been keeping up with the game. The month felt more like a formal display of everything they've said before with a few tidbits of new details. I get it that you can't choose what Hello Games will allow you to show. I suppose if Hello Games is going to dedicate a month of coverage, they need to supply a bit more.

Thanks.

Well, I was disappointed with most of the coverage but that was actually pretty interesting. Still disappointed no release date. And i still think Hello Games should have held off on hyping the game so much with this if they didn't have one.

I'm just going to resign that it will be 2016. As I said, effectively for me if it's not out August and Mad Max is as good as I hope, it might as well be 2016 for me (or maybe I'll hold off on Mad Max come to think of it. I'm actually more excited for NMS).

You guys are sooooo going to start shooting the first player you happen to bump into and steal their loot xD

I am not. I try to be a nice player, even in GTA. If I can keep from shooting people unless they shoot me first in GTA, I am not going to just shoot some one in No Man's Sky (unless they shoot first and most likely I'll just run honestly. I know my skills against other players and my chances are very not good if I stand and fight).

Nothing wrong with the footage at all really. I thought the two videos about sound and music were interesting.

I think much of the information has been talked about in many other places so people who've been following the game quite closely didn't get any real surprises but I don't think massive surprises were really promised so a sense of disappointment at IGN seems a little misplaced.

What I would like to know (if you're able to answer) is whether you feel hyped or cautiously optimistic for the game now you've had hands on time with it or if you have any concerns at all?

I don't understand why HG can't say something like '2015' or 'Q1 2016' though. I mean surely that's vague enough?

Maybe they are planning a mic drop announcement at a conference?

I thought it was a lot of great stuff. I do still desperately want someone to force these guys to give the controller to someone and just let them play the "real" game without all the amped up animal/robot police spawns, and just see how it is.

I think we will. Well, rather, we'll have a greater chance of running into folks the closer you get to the center of the galaxy. It just makes sense.

There are 16 quantillion planets

Even if there are 2 million people in this game, that is hundreds of millions of stars unique to each one of those people.

people talk like the center of the galaxy is this little mass of stars. Nah, it is likely many hundreds of millions of stars surrounding the center.

Sure, you might get ULTRA lucky and run into someone. But I wouldn't go into the game with that directive in mind.

I'm not keen on much math so if someone could translate 8e+12 in an actual number that would be cool. Because that is what 16 quantillion divided by 2 million is. Is that 8 with 12 0's at the end? so 800,000,000?

If that is right, that means even with 2 million players there are 800 million stars that could be unique to that person. So, yeah, alot.

I have no issues with being that spread out from other players since I like to go at my own pace and explore, but I wonder if they've ever considered creating a star map that gets updated as the whole community progresses through the game? Each system/planet will have their own name so it would be cool if you could eventually warp to specific locations (depending if you have enough fuel/power) to meet up with others or even recommended places.

Not getting a release date is on Sony/Hello, not you guys.

However, what is on you is the lack of interesting gameplay we saw. You just walked around and did nothing! so lame. gah. not a single space fight or anything!

your joke, "he heard what I did to the goat" was really funny though lol

Hmm. His response to the release date question makes me think it will launch in 2016 along side Morpheus as its killer app AND that Morpheus' release date will be revealed soon (with the NMS release date revealed at the same time or soon after). If I were to guess, either Paris Games Week or PSX (if they intend on doing another one.

Apparently there are:
18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets in NMS.
___________400,000,000,000 stars in the Milky way.

There are estimated to be 200 - 400 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy.
I think the estimate for planets in the Milky Way is currently at least 100 billion. Currently it seems that all star systems in NMS have planets which doesn't appear to be true of our galaxy.

One thing we have no idea of is how many planets there are per galaxy in NMS or indeed how many galaxies there are. Even if there is 'only' 400 billion planets per galaxy that still means the galaxies will be huge and the chances of meeting people quite remote.

There is only one galaxy, or am I wrong here?
I thought the goal was to reach the center of the galaxy. That wouldn't make sense if there were multiple galaxies.

Lol, I would've immeditately shot the ground and build a tunnel through the planet.

Lol, I would've immeditately shot the ground and build a tunnel through the planet.

Nope. There's definitely more than one galaxy.
Everyone starts in the same galaxy and the stated goal is for players to reach the centre of the galaxy.

Presumably what happens is that upon reaching the centre somehow intergalactic travel unlocks but nobody knows for sure at this stage. Nobody knows, if after unlocking intergalactic travel, whether you would then be given a new goal or if you would be just expected to keep exploring about until you got bored.

So it's got to be a Morpheus launch title, right? What else could it be outside of their control that's holding back the release date announcement.

I think it will be playable on Morpheus launch day, but I think the actual NMS release date is prior to this. My theory is they've been asked by Sony to wait for their Morpheus launch announcement event have NMS playable on it, then announce a release date at the same event. People then decide whether to wait for Morpheus before playing.

Still hoping for a 2015 release!

I want to livestream this and go on adventures with people ^_^

The fascinating thing about livestreams and Youtube vids of No Man's Sky is that NONE of them will ever be the same. Whilst the core experience will be similar for a lot of people, the actual journey of discovery won't.

I'm hoping their algorithm allows for extremely rare creature so you can have that 'Yeti' moment. Imagine landing on a baron and hostile planet that's stacked with useful materials. You play for hours gathering this material, comfortable in the notion that the only danger is your suit giving out and the environment taking your life. Then you hear the sound of a solitary creature.

This is why Sean Murray needs to stick to his guns and have more baron planets than planets with life. The rarer these moments are, the more significant the effect of experiencing them.

YES

the whole thrill of exploration and discovery and " OH SHIT LOOK AT THAT! " moments is for those moments to be rare. If you go onto a planet completely expecting to find something interesting, it will not take long at all for it to no longer be interesting. But make it where there are a bunch of misses with the gold mine strike happening only every so often and you will have people jumping on telling their stories all the time. You just have to make the journey an interesting one as well, and interesting enough to keep people going in between the major discoveries and those " oh shit " moments.

Do you go in search of this creature in order to name it and upload it, or do you stay well clear and not risk dying? Imagine discovering that this creature is somewhere in a labyrinth of cave systems and the deeper you go, the darker it gets, until the only illumination is the light from your helmet. You hear the sound growing louder so you know you are nearing this unknown creature. It could be benevolent for all you know but do you risk finding out? Then you round a corner and your helmet illuminates it. It's huge with a slick black coating and clawed feet. You freeze for a moment as it ambles towards you sniffing at the air. You realise that it's blind and so is likely to detect its pray by sound. Do you run and risk being detected or do you stay put and hope it passes on by?

Those are the moments that Youtube was designed for and the moments that will be remembered for a very long time.

That's why I want this game.

The fact that we saw almost nothing of how the crafting system works, nothing about space combat, and very limited explanations on trading and other game systems combined with the fact that IGN didn't get a release date is a terrible sign.

If this game comes out in 2015 I'll eat my pants.

Not to mention the pop in and animations still looked a ways from being perfected. My guess, next May.

That's exactly how it works ;)

You imply it was decided before the month even started. There were discussions throughout the month. It just didn't work out.

It was said it jest. No malice intended.
My only real gripe with them was there wasn't enough new and interesting stuff after the first video, and also the length of some of them was super short. Other than that, I really enjoyed it.

Are there allways other spaceships near the Player ?
That kills the feeling of exploring this places for the first time.

You are the first being to discover this new planet.. asides from the hundred ship strong warring fleets orbiting it, the traders flying up and down from the surface, the pirates attacking the traders and whoever built and runs the trade stations that are in every system in the universe.

Asides from that totally the first.

Yeah it's kind of part of the lore, you are not the first sentient being to reach many of these planets but you are the first of your kind. To those who are already there you a new and unknown alien so it is all new to *you*.

That would be terrible

That would be terrible

We don't really know until launch how populated the solar systems will be.

There needs to be a trade station in a solar system out of necessity of the game mechanics. Players would have to travel multiple hours, possibly days, if they had to move to another solar system without upgrades.

Whether trade stations have "sentient life" on board that's able to discover planets before you do, that's up to your imagination.

Bronybuscus: What is the funniest glitch/mishap that you have seen in your game?

Murray: Oh man, I probably shouldn’t say this, but of any game I’ve worked on we definitely have the very best bugs. I better not list too many of these or you’ll think the game is buggy.

One time, we had creatures that lived on the ceiling of caves only in the Northern Hemisphere. Another time all the buildings started walking around the planet. There was a space station that tried to dock in another space station, and a gun that was so powerful it blasted creatures into orbit. My favourite was probably the bug that would reincarnate you as a different creature each time you died. One minute you are in a dog-fight, the next you are a shark in the ocean.

What Excites You the Most?

This made me laugh out loud. Must of been hilarious witnessing these bugs first hand haha! Great article on IGN to be fair. Sean explained things well.

This game is building quite a large Youtube community behind it. If they release while the fire is hot, I really CAN see it hitting Minecraft status.

I doubt it'll ever reach Minecraft levels, because this game is very much a single-player experience.

Part of the charm of Minecraft is the ability to share your adventures with other people. It's how Yogscast was able to blow up, their early Let's Play series was magic. (They were the first to start incorporating story into their videos, and Villains (played by real life people)

Ah I didn't realize that, must have missed it somehow. That's even worse news, in terms of the Universe size then, for those who are hoping to bump into other players.

Thanks for posting proof of the galaxy stuff. I've previously posted links to videos of interviews with Murray where he categorically states there are multiple galaxies in one universe.

I think the '70 questions' video mentions it too.
I mean it's not exactly hard to find. You'd think these guys could just Google it. Lol

Yeah. But the numbers are there!!
I know they are impossibly big to really, actually visualise with a true concept of the scale but with a bit of imagination you can get a rough idea of the vastness and the utter insignificance of one person in all of that.

https://youtu.be/buqtdpuZxvk

That's from the 1980's - as science has improved I think many of the estimates contained have probably gone upwards.
