Oath Keepers to Arm 50 Black Protesters in Ferguson with AR- 15s

Head of the St. Louis County, Mo. Oath Keepers group, Sam Andrews... explained that he and members of his group spent almost an entire night speaking with black protestors about the events in Ferguson and the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms.

“Every person we talked to said if they carried they’d be shot by police. That’s the reason we’re going to hold this event and it will be a legal demonstration,”

Andrews said that the 50 African-Americans, armed with long barrel rifles, will be accompanied by Oath Keepers members during the march through downtown Ferguson.

Cook asked Andrews what he would say to the protesters in Ferguson.

“The first thing I would say is ‘Black Lives Matter.’ The second thing I would say is that the Oath Keepers are there to protect your rights. We care about you, regardless of all the lies that the media and some other instigators have tried to propagate. Black lives matter, we care about you, we love you and we are there to protect you,” said Andrew.
“We love the people of Ferguson and they deserve to be protected and the St. Louis County police is not doing the job.”

The right to bear arms is the last line of self-defense against tyranny; a crucial lesson that those most tread upon in society would be wise to learn. Andrew’s efforts to empower and protect those most victimized, while recognizing his moral obligation do to so, shows a character that seeks to truly enlighten and empower those disenfranchised by the state.

When protesters are out in force, and the police don’t respect their right to demonstrate, open carry levels the playing field and keeps the police from engaging in reckless brutality and unprovoked violence.

The Oath Keepers are claiming that they are not racist, that Ferguson PD is violating Missouri open carry laws by asking them not to carry rifles during a state of emergency, and that to combat these issues, they want to give black people guns and go on a 2nd amendment march with them.

You can't just arm someone....do these protesters have licenses?

I still think the concept of open carry is almost cave man esque that we do as a society

Uh...UHHH?!

This is seriously the strangest news I've seen in the past couple of weeks.

"The first thing I'd say is that Black Lives Matter."

This is fucking weird.

uh..hmm...

you know...as long as they're far far away from the main group...I dunno...really protesters and guns, not a good mix.

That's not why you're out there, to stand armed for self defense. I'm not feeling this exchange, but proceed with caution.

IIRC, you don't need a license or permit to carry a long gun in Missouri.

Yes, people can indeed find more than one issue to be of importance.

Yeah, I know. I'm not denying that.

The Oath Keepers are not the kind of organization who I would ever expect to make that statement.

If this is all legitimate, awesome. But it doesn't pass the smell test, and I'm suspicious of the intent behind doing this.

I'll happily eat crow if they legitimately want black folks to know their rights and are willing to assist in doing so in a way that doesn't make the protesters walking targets.

Like I said, it's fucking weird.

Oath Keepers... do these motherfuckers think they're on Game of Thrones or some shit?

Also, arming 50 black individuals in a region that has been making headlines for months now due to the consequences of its deep-seated institutionalised racism - what could possibly go wrong?

I understand your reticence but personally I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. I've been wanting to see exactly this (more black folks open carrying) for a while now.

This is the same clown who defended his pal's use of the word "mulatto" on npr the other day by saying, "well doesn't Obama have a white mother and a black father?"

Forgive me if I don't take him at face value.

Was not expecting this. I think this is a great idea for a demonstration in theory but incredibly worried about the outcome, mostly from the Police side of things.

See, that's where I am with it. If it wasn't the goddamned Oath Keepers, I wouldn't be so skeptical.

I wouldnt do that shit even with some Eugene Levy-level white dude as a shield. These dudes just wanna piggyback on actual racial bias to be allowed to harrass the other kind of brown people.

I thought mulatto was the technical term for mixed race black/white, just outmoded a la oriental, negro, etc.

If he is older, he may have not meant any offense.

Well, at face value, that seems to fall in line with what these sort of gun groups believe but maybe this is a passive way to escalate racial tensions.

Please don't do that. I don't want to see "50 African Americans killed by officers in Ferguson" on the news.

And I'm sure those people who're arming them are gonna stand in between them and the police in case something bad happens. Why wouldn't they?

Well if the Oath Keepers aren't the racist fucks they appear to be... awesome! Big strides for black folks were made when groups like the Black Panthers were encouraging black gun use and community self-policing. How weird it would be if the Oath Keepers bring that back - god knows the NBP and Huey P. Newton Gun Club are fucking terrible.

As a non-American, I don't understand the mindset of any black Americans who are pro-gun. The black community in the US is disproportionally impacted by gun related deaths, both from crime and the police.

Fighting for your 2nd amendment right to bear arms seems like it should be way down at the bottom of the list of civil rights to address in the light of all the other forms of discrimination still being faced.

Same reason why Ben Carson or Herman Cain runs for the Republican party' nomination. It's that 5-10% of blacks who really don't give a shit about the problems of their own race as long as they personal are benefiting from it.

Guns are the main power that the police have over black people. The oath keepers want to conduct an experiment where that power imbalance is leveled. The purpose of this experiment is to see if the police will behave differently in the face of armed protesters. Will the police be more aggressive or less? Will they be more respectful or less?

The oath keepers view this as not just a racism issue but also an issue of government authority. Police brutality is not restricted to black people. The oath keepers want to find out what the police will do when their authority is challenged by an armed group.
