Rumor – CD Projekt RED To Sign A Publishing Deal Or Be Bought By Electronic Arts

How excited are you for this news?

I don't see what makes this such a bad thing, personally. If they are meeting with EA to be purchased or establish some kind of future publishing deal, then it's likely being done for a very good reason. It isn't always about us guys.

Maybe the financials simply aren't looking as good as they would like them to for future development of the kinds of games that they as a studio like to make. Maybe they just feel like they want more money for their efforts, and that's all this truly boils down to. Maybe they want to be able to pay people better by improving their studio's financial situation.

They are running a business, and it's only common sense to be concerned about the possibility that they will be able to continue running the business as they see fit.

Why not, it worked so well for Maxis, Mythic, Bullfrog, Origin, Westwood, Pandemic, Black Box...

Especially Origin. They weren't making anything worthwhile until EA picked them up.

I'll never understand people's need to think the worst possible scenario is true in order to justify their irrational hate for something.
Irrational hate? Lol c'mon man this is EA; the same company that tried to kill Visual Concepts by buying out the NFL license. Pushed out Spore when it was nowhere near ready. Ruined Dead Space. Abandoned Sega when they needed them most.

Man, fuck EA. There, I said it. They almost got back on my good side last gen and would've stayed there if they didn't mess up Dead Space and abandoned so many franchises when they could've been developed further.

But they've been floundering this gen; playing favorites, going behind dev's backs (Titanfall), etc. They should leave CDPR alone. CDPR can take care of themselves.

And I don't want GOG to die, so there's that.

EA on GoG
Would literally break the internet.

To be honest, this all sounds very unlikely. CD Projekt just shipped a best seller, they have a digital distribution platform that is doing quite well, and they've been on record several times coming out against the sort of business practices that EA is well known for. I know people have bad memories of EA coming in, acquiring, and destroying small game devs, but times have changed and improved for said small have devs.

When Origin sold itself to EA, it was due to the fact that Origin was having a difficult time getting shelf space for their games and thus, had difficulty selling them. CD Projekt doesn't have that issue.

This would kill CDPR

EA will kill this studio. This better not fucking happen because they will fuck with cyberpunk 2077 and want to make it some annual crap fest, i mean why in the fuck would you sign with EA or ActBliz? they will control you.

This would be a disaster. If this is true (and I'm not 100% convinced that it isn't - of course the higher-ups would deny it at this point), the studio will either be dead or become a zombie within 5 years.

.... are you fucking serious?

They're a company, dude. They exist to make money. They are not beholden to you.

There is absolutely nothing personal about this.

Like, is this a serious post?

So how many developers became better or at the very least maintained their quality after being bought by EA?

So much for free DLC and consumer friendly practices if this were to happen. Get ready for mandatory tacked on MP and paid armor packs.

That's in the short term case. The worst case scenario is no more CDPR in 6-7 years.

Look at Origin. At one time they were THE computer game company. They had the biggest RPG series, Ultima, they had Wing Commander, they had several other games.

Now it's basically all gone. EA closed them down and IP that was once huge is now nothing. And EA has a history of doing that. Over and over and over.

Hated this idea until I remembered that EA owns the Star Wars gaming license and I thought of a CDPR Star Wars RPG.

This thread is funny.

People are praising CDPR for many things including their DLC stance, but IMO The Witcher 3 free DLC is text book example of cut game content that should have been included from the start.

Free DLC
Download the DLC from your respective platform store to find it in game.

Beard and Hair Style Set (Found at any Barber)
Temerian Armor Set (White Orchard, Merchant close by the Woesong Bridge Signpost)
Alternative Look for Yennefer
New Quest "Contract: Missing Miners" (Found in Skellige on a notice board)
Elite Crossbow Set
"Ballad Heroes" Neutral Gwent Card Set
Nilfgaardian Armor Set (Quartermaster in Crows Perch other side of the Master Blacksmith)
New Quest "Fool's Gold" (Found by speaking to bandits at Lurtch in Velen)
Alternative Look for Triss
Skellige Armor Set (Sold by the Smith in Kaer Trolde)
New Quest "Scavenger Hunt: Wolf School Gear"
New Quest "Contract: Skellige's Most Wanted"
New Quest "Where The Cat and Wolf Play" (Begins in Oreton, Velen)
Alternative Look for Ciri
New Finisher Animations
New Game+ (Use clear game data)

Hair and beard styles, weapons, skins, new game + and some shitty quests. Is this really the pinnacle of DLC? I'm sure Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are going to be great, but there is nothing new or groundbreaking about then. They are even selling a fucking season pass. Some one correct me if I'm wrong but did they start selling the season pass before announcing the expansions like Bethesda is doing with Fallout? Because frankly I really don't believe Bethesda still has absolutely no idea at what kind of DLC they are going to make for FO4.

CDPR are just smarter than most devs or publishers. By offering this "free" DLC they are ensuring that people don't trade the game in the first weeks of release and they even get good will from gamers.

Now don't get me wrong, I love and own all the Witcher games, and I really like CDPR and their post release support for their games (TW2 Enhanced edition and patch come to mind), but they are not the saints or the saviors people are painting then to be.

Are we forgetting the testimony from that Bish verified poster about work conditions at CDPR? Do you guys really believe that they put their costumers before profit? CDPR shouldn't get a free pass because their public persona is more consumer friendly than other companies. From what we heard working conditions there are as bad as any EA owned dev out there.

For all that people complain about EA, personally I like many of their games as much as I like CDPR's.

I feel bad about the devs that EA bought and closed (specially Westwood, I LOVE C&C games), but it's too easy to place the blame for their closure exclusively on EA while the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

How many times have we seen devs mismanage projects when they start to get big and work with bigger budgets? Man I still remember how hyped I was for Hellgate London...how could the guys behind Diablo release that POS? Money wasn't an issue, they had financing from a bank to avoid publisher interference. Maybe if they had publisher interference they might have avoided feature creep and actually delivered a good game.

I'm happy that we are experiencing a WRPG renaissance, but I don't begrudge Bioware because they evolved to something else entirely. I actually enjoy the games they are making now like I enjoyed their older output.

Thankfully now I can play both kinds of games. Old school bioware like RPG's and the new ones. And I think the Witcher 3 have more in common with modern bioware games than they do with the older ones.

I don't see what the big deal is, honestly.

I recall them speaking about their stance on DLC out of both sides of their mouths and silently (or actively denying) downgrading visuals in the lead up to Witcher 3's release. Seems like they would fit in just fine.

lol wow

Since CDPR is a publicly traded company and Iwinski/Kicinski are MINORITY shareholders any potential EA takeover wouldn't happen in their offices. They would just buy shares from the insurance companies.

This rumour is retarded to say the least and I am amazed this thread is still live. I expected higher standards from Gaf.

If that happens then Bioware after Mass Effect will be killed and CDPR will take over as the main developer along with Dice.

Will Bioware become CD Projekt Red Edmonton? Or will CDPR become Bioware Poland?
CDPR will become DICE Poland.

All of the DLCs? How do you know that?
I may be agree on the first set of DLSs that have been announced before release, but the rest are still not announced.

How about Fallout 4 season pass announcement? Will you say they're not cut from the game content? How can you be so sure?

EA has a track record of shutting down studio's and they also have a track record of turning studio's into an unrecognisable mess to when people used to like said studio's *cough* Criterion *cough*, heck Insomiac had a marketing deal with EA and the negatives looked to outweigh whatever the good was.

EA on GoG

That's already happened with Sid Meyer's Alpha Centari and Sim City.

Though if they're talking, maybe this means EA is going to attempt to get Syndicate (both?) on GoG with a few back-catalog titles?

I really hope CDPR will never sign anything with EA or any other US or EU publisher. They should stay independent to make the best games they could possibly make and at the same time not being afraid to eventually be closed by shitty EA or any other stupid and greedy publisher. The Witcher 3 is a great example of that they could make a great game on their own without any help from other publishers.

BioWare already turned into shit (at least in my eyes) thanks to EA and if the same thing will happen to CDPR.... Just no, fuck this shit.

Or maybe we'll have more older EA games DRM Free on GOG? I would be in for a DRM Free version of the Mass Effect series.

While this is all still just a rumor, there are a few things I find odd with your reasoning:

1) Unless I'm missing something, CD Projekt RED's value is at an all time high, meaning that if they were to be bought, the owners of the company could ask for the highest amount of money right now. Think about it like this: Lebron James can ask for and get a huge sum of money if he's a top player in the NBA. Lebron James cannot ask for and get a huge sum of money if he's not a top player in the NBA. If Lebron James wanted to make a boatload of money, the best time for him to do so is when he's a top player in the NBA.

2) The success of their digital platform is, realistically, nowhere near the success of Steam. In short, they're not making "We'll never sell the company" kind of money.

3) There are rarely morals and principles when it comes to extremely large sums of money. Paul Volcker (one of the smartest economists alive) used to talk about this, and he would say something along the lines of "Money can buyout morals". The Wu-Tang clan also have a fantastic saying for this: Cash Rules Everything Around Me. Independent businesses will say they love being independent and hate corporate practices until they're offered a check that can buy them a good number of islands. I'm not saying CD Projekt will go against their principles (again this is a rumor at this point) but just be aware that their tune of independence can do a complete 180.

Now that this vicious rumor has been debunked I just want to say fuck you to whoever started it. You know who you are asshole.

Sorry for the coarse language but this really got me worked up this morning.

I fear for GOG if they get bought out.... I have zero confidence that anything good will ever come out of an EA buyout. Because nothing good has ever come from these buyouts.
