Ughhhh. Just saw this news. Really sucks. I think we all expected that they would be affected by this, especially if Kojima's departure meant that there would be no immediate work following MGO, but.... ugh. Something something fuck Konami something. :/

I'd like Konami to eventually regret this, and their other recent decisions somehow, and realize how fucking good they could've had it.

Jeez that's awful to hear. I hope these guys find studios that will pick up them up swiftly. They did pretty great with MGO.

at this point, i'm almost excited for when they turn the lights off so we can just stop discussing them as a game company

their name should really only come up with the legacy of their classics, and how shitty it was that we never got silent hills. for real though, best of luck to those affected.

Gotta love Konami.

*MGSV sells stupidly high numbers in the first week, immediately making back all rumored amounts of money spent on the project*

Konami: "Shut it all down, folks."

I'm more than confident Konami is rolling in the green after MGSV.

The rumored budget was $180 million dollars. MGSV apparently sold 5 million copies, including downloads. If all that is true, then yes it has made its money back.

Only 80 actually.

If PC's MGO gets canned I'm going to fucking riot. It's probably being ported over by some other studio now.

I'll demand a refund, too. Even if I've clocked 109 hours in the campaign, you don't announce a huge portion of a game and then decide to shitcan the studio working on it just because you're sick of them.

I've been firmly in the "Konami's Dumb" camp, but now I'm straight up #FucKonami.

If the 80 million rumor was true and that was a early figure would five million copies still make back the costs for marketing, production, shipping and other assorted costs for launching the game and supporting it after?

So they just gonna leave MGO out to die...shame. Don't ever want to see them enter the industry again. But they better sell their franchises first!

Rumored production budget was $80 million. Double that and you probably get somewhere around what the game needs to make to break even.

The game did not sell 5 million, Konami announced it shipped 5 million.

So...really we don't know if it made it's money back. But it's certainly not a slam dunk.

I'm more than a little skeptical about this, it seems bizarre to spend however much money they did developing MGO only to shut down the studio that developed it, prior to it even releasing on all the platforms it's meant to. At the worst I'd be willing to believe that they wound the studio down, only leaving enough people to work on patches and updates.

Hmm, surely they wouldn't be cancelling MGO so close to coming out on PC, at least if we had it on PC it could be modded into being a functional online community without official support.

They're doing this so that PC would not be able to do that.

All for Revenge.

On the other hand, this means all of them are free for Sony to lap up along with Kojima and his new studio....

Like I said already, most of them have already moved on to Infinity Ward with a smaller amount going to Respawn and Sony and others to various mobile startups.

I can hear Konami PR typing their response as we speak denying that they even had a "studio" in LA and that Kojima's boat recently "disappeared" off the coast of Japan. Then continue that Kojima is currently presumed missing after the waters were deemed unsafe to send out a rescue crew and that MGO will no longer be supported. Apparently the final code for the PC version was hidden in a safe on Kojma's boat. Konami CEO Hideki Hayakawa had no comment after being asked about the recent news because he wasn't aware that Kojima was on vacation.

Meanwhile Kojima is alive and stranded on an island. Metal Gear will return.

Konami still following Konami' guide to game development:

1. Have existing/remaining developers create a game (mode).
2. Release game (mode) and fire everyone involved.
3. ????
4. Complain about lack of profits, and shift focus more onto Pachinko.

Christmas basically starts on Halloween now.

If they abandon MGO then they are pretty stupid seen as it could be a nice little earner for them over the next couple of years if they get it right.

i can assure you that if konami is making press releases for shipping figures like they did for 3 million, and making a big thing of it in their financials like they did for 5 million, they've likely made a profit and are pleased with the success of the game.

to what degree, we don't know. let's not pretend the game floundered though.

Fuck Konami. Ugggghhhhhhhh.

After all the shit that went down, I expected this AFTER January's MGO PC release...

But...why am I surprised? It's Konami... *sigh*

I feel terrible for the developers.

More selfishly, I hate how one of my favourite series has succumbed to the Death of a Thousand Cuts. It's been painful to watch.

Even when they were good with Kojima they didn't give a flying fuck about MGO. It's never been supported. It's never been built to last. It's basically just shoved out in a semi-broken state and playable for 10-12 months before they shut the servers down and tell the players to fuck themselves.

Considering how Konami has behaved recently, this news doesn't surprise me. I hope all those developers effected by this, find work with an developer, that actually appreciates their talent, and gives a damn about it's product. I'm so disgusted how this whole thing about MGSV TPP went down.
