Final Fantasy is a huge series and had a big presence on Nintendo platforms, and has a lot of history with the company. Its most popular character just happens to be Cloud.
Sakurai did mention that Snake's "outsider" position was part of the reason he was added, so the same probably applies here.

At this point we can put 2 and 2 together. All 6 third party characters in Smash history have been predictably this way

I think the Smash community's tendency to infer about what Sakurai is thinking based on patterns that keep being disproven again and again instead of focusing on what he actually says is a complete waste of time.
When you think of Capcom, people think of Ryu and Mega Man.
Ryu is the most iconic fighter from the biggest fighting series in the World. Mega Man is just as huge in Japan especially.
I focus on what he does. Not what he says. The third party characters have all followed a pattern.

I have been saying Square was going to get a rep for months and months. I kept going back and forth between Cloud and Chrono. I was wrong on that point. I did not have the courage of my convictions.
It's like the people who acted like Wii Fit Trainer was an obvious inclusion, citing two GameFAQs topics from 2010 where Wii Fit was vaguely mentioned.

Damn at that meltdown. I thought the Geno bandwagon ended after Brawl released since hardly anyone gave a shit about him leading up to Smash 4's release. It was always the one character who's popularity I didn't get.
Oh well, I've never played Final Fantasy but Cloud could be interesting depending on his Limit Breaks. There was 3 placeholder slots found in the last update wasn't there? They might be going for another simultaneous release next month.

In terms of overall sales, Monster Hunter like 3 million more sales than Megaman for the entire series with a 100 less titles being included (http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/salesdata.html). RE also has more sales throughout less games (66 million with 101 titles being included)

Technically Nintendo has already crossed over with Spyro (even though his name isn't on it anymore) with the recent Amiibo/Skylanders DK and Bowser.
So that's two or three once "Sony" franchises Nintendo has had crossovers with so far.

why would there be rules in a game that is literally about bringing character from different franchises to fight each other. The first time i saw pikachu beating the shit out of link in smash 64 at a video store i lost my shit and knew that this game was the thing i needed in my life. And pikachu beating the shit out of link makes no sense.
