Ex-Naughty Dog Community Guy on DLC/Microtransactions: 'You should pay for good work'

That is horrid.

Just imagine if 343i decides to introduce the starting overshield for those having difficulty with the mp...

All for a couple of bucks...

Stupid reason is stupid reason even if it comes from ND.

PS: Do the "good work" beforehand and release with the game...

Edit: I heard that this quote is not from a ND employee...

Where is there good work there? It's the same thing as paying to skip time.

...And what exactly is wrong with that?

Tons of gamers aren't teenagers with endless free time anymore. Let them pay for their enjoyment with the dollars that they have, instead of the time that they don't.

This guy doesn't even work for Naughty Dog anymore so I have no idea why he's speaking for the company. Didn't ND say before that everything in UC4 MP can be earned in game so I feel like they've learned from their mistakes in TLoU MP.

Perhaps there is a reason Eric is no longer at ND? Maybe that's a bit speculative.

Still, it's an easy target to pile on and it's ND. High profile enough. Even if you take the fact that you can indeed play with those weapons for FREE, you still have loadout customization behind a paywall and that's shitty. Because in the end, in general, even if free, loadout customize-able weapons are better, players should have the freedom to fine tune their loadouts no matter what with every weapon. The "paid weapons" are simply on preset classes and people rather customize their loadout than settle for a class with ND-made parameters.

While the usual raging about weapons behind a paywall is not exactly as sold here, and many posters writing driveby's have no idea of the distinction (that much is clear), loadout customization still is very important in TLOU. So Yes, pile on, cause it's shitty. nonetheless.
I'm not defending that it is behind a paywall. I'm just against the idea that the DLC is pay to win, cuz it clearly isn't if you play the gane.

Not only does not work for ND the quote in the title is out of context.

Yep. This thread needs a huge edit. Click bait, and flame bait all in one.

Bingo.

Anyways, work on making a full game first, then give us things at a later date that are actually extra. Guns and random crap are not things a lot of people want to pay for imo but maybe they do.

In their defence, they have always done this. Uncharted 2, 3 and The Last of Us started with minimal/cosmetic microtransaction DLC only, and over time added more and more stuff which started to impact actual gameplay.

Hopefully the same happens with Uncharted 4, so at least we'll get a few months/a year without any crap pay-to-win-like stuff.

As a dev there's probably no point wading in to this but...

During development your scope is invariably larger than you will be able to complete (insert maxim about work expanding to fill space/time etc). To hit your street date you scope down and cut the work you don't think you can complete that will have the least effect on the quality of the final product.

Towards ship you branch. The final game goes out, but the content team keeps working on things that couldn't make the ship date. You resurrect that cut level and repurpose and build something new and put it out there. Is the original purchaser entitled to it because it was being worked on while the game still wasn't out?

What if you didn't start repurposing work on it until the second DLC or some later TU? Is the purchaser still entitled to it?

What if you didn't resurrect it until the next game? Is the purchaser still entitled to it?

Ultimately it doesn't matter when a piece of content was 'developed'. The only thing a consumer can do is evaluate the product on sale at the time of purchase and decide if the value exchange is a good one.

I don't speak for my employer yada yada.

Definitely this.

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Try to use the thing in an actual match against competent people and do decent. You can't. It all sounds amazing and peachy on paper, but the maps are filled health kits and people healing. Plus, you have to waste parts on it. Every other purchaseable is better than it.
That goes out the window when a person is actually good with it and hounds you after hitting you with it once. The maps certainly aren't filled to the brim with health packs. Like with all the dlc, balancing goes out the window in the hands of skilled players compared to the base weapons.

The paid guns aren't even that good. I remember back when all this first started i was on dualshockers and people were saying the weapons were op so me and three other people argued against it and got a team. We had to use regular weapons the other team would use the payed ones...needless to say all it takes is skill, straight clean sweep in interrogation. Microtransactions suck sure but they don't ruin a game, well at least not this one

Lol I would hope we don't get ANY pay to win like stuff

So the guy oesn't work for ND, but posters seem to know the guy and says he knows what other people are doing with their games?

Anyways, don't blame the posters, a thread title should be accurate for us.

He certainly did. Which is why I stopped playing TLOU MP, because it got riddled with a ton of people using them.

He did not, it definitely caters to a less precise playstyle but player skill and proper use of traps always wins over someone with more bullets in that particular MP.

Noooo im blaming posters too. Jumping in and calling a company trash with not much else to say is all on a poster

Why not make DLC free and thus attract more people to buy the full game? I wonder how that would turn out. Would it definitely make less money?

True, but also people need read the articles before making knee jerk responses off of a sensational click headline.

This is almost 2016. People should have learned that by now. No excuses when the information is right there. Don't people fact check anymore?

*looks at society* No, no they do not. Such a lost art it is.

Yep. Hence the term, shitpost.

But if you're good with the crossbow, you'll be way better with the El Diablo, military sniper, shotgun, or assault rifle.

Most people stick with their teammates, so them hounding you after the first shot isn't a big concern (besides, most people are running first aid training, so they'll heal up before you get to them).

And almost everyone at all times have 3 health packs with them, with health kits constantly respawning.

No he isn't, other than for his games, so please don't defend devs making things take longer.

Unsure since I never used DLC guns but from his statement it completely sounds like that...which is frustrating, since a great playing who is 'kicking ass' gets even better now.

He's in a better position than anyone not working in the industry and the rest of your statement betrays a lack of reading comprehension.

Not necessarily as it builds up good will which technically can turn into more sales. However that is not always the case as consumers have shown themselves willing to spend a lot on dlc.

Oh dear. Not a good look Naughty Dog, not a good look.

Edit: Oh he's not speaking for Naughty Dog. Never mind then.

So it is better to go the safe route and just have paid DLC so the devs can cash in on whales, right?

Keep disappointing me, GAF.

1. Devs work 2 years on a game.
2. The game gets released and people pay 60$ for it.
3. The devs keep creating content for the game for several months.
4. Lets make them work all those months for free because we already paid the game.

And everything because your entitlement is so strong that you cant conceive a finished game with extra content.

How wrong can be your logic, people? You all talk like if suddently a dev creates content for any finished game, that game would become unfinished until the new content "completes" it.

We could argue whats worth a paid DLC, but hell, how can you be so angry at people wanting money for the work they do?

This thread is really disgusting.

Same here, man - no gameplay-impacting DLC would be the best-case - it's just what they've done in the past.

If UC4 follows the pattern of their last two games (likely), the best-case scenario is a delay in game-affecting DLC like this. It would start showing up 4-6 months after release. The honeymoon period is our only chance at pure gameplay.

Imagine if they had a no-DLC playlist :( would fix all the issues

Not to mention used games are a huge reason as well. People who buy used, the developer still has a chance to receive some payment if the person wants to purchase extra content.

Hence why some pre-order or initial launch codes when used on a new product, are not carried over to a used (I know you know this, just speaking out loud). And those who buy used sometimes have a chance to purchase those things as well.

The used market helped spawn this, every bit as much as people who will buy quality content. I have no issue buying extra quality content for games after they launch.

Gotta get my knee jerk reaction in!

Paying $60 for the base game, the season pass for $30, the microtransaction and the paywall to access the multiplayer.

It's more like, "We can get away with it."

But that's not why people are upset. It's when they introduce DLC that ruins the balance and punishes those who don't buy the DLC. Like the TLOU weapons. I'm fine with DLC post-launch. But I'm not fine with DLC that changes game balance and punishes those who don't buy it. I don't see why disliking that is disgusting.

Well, we should have news that is enough for us in some ways in the OP. Poster's shouldn't be fishing us just as well as all the crap articles around imo

Games have gotten way more expensive. Games are not necessarily selling any better than in the past. Players have been paying the same $50-$60 they have for decades. Something has to give.

I could not agree more. Go to work for your employers for free several months out of the year, and not get paid for your work.

Plus devs do not get paid for used games. So someone purchases a used game, the developer has the opportunity to get some compensation on additional content if the purchaser finds quality in that.

Well, we should have news that is enough for us in some ways in the OP. Poster's shouldn't be fishing us just as well as all the crap articles around imo

It is not fishing in this case to click the link. The very second spaced, easy to see, sentence starts off with, FORMER. But I understand your take as well. The OP knew what he/she was doing to gloss over that word that stuck out to me in less than 3 seconds. And fail to include anything about him being former, that the article mentions, TWICE.

Ok. Lets not pretend that this is some grand gesture and not just an easy attempt to maximize profits.

I dislike micro-transactions in most games, specially if you already paid for it. It is just not elegant.

To me it's like going to the movies and having commercial breaks there. Are you entitled to watch a movie without commercial breaks(assuming that's how the movie is being shown)? No, but doesn't change the fact that it sucks.

We made a hat, you should buy it and kiss our ass because its good work.

We even went in and looked at the stats and found some of our newer players were struggling a bit, and in this world of instant gratification, we thought well, lets just make a gun that nerfs those who had put in the time and experience learning to play the multiplayer and put in a weapon that newcomers can buy to instantly get a leg up. I mean the other players can still get it too but hey the cost of winning is, well, literally money. You can thank us later.

--------

They really dont understand paid DLC it seems.

I remember when you could buy expansion packs and it was basically a whole new campaign continuing the story of one of your favourite games without sacrificing getting the full original game as it was intended and the expansion was as lengthy as the original. Now? Give its give us money for petty shit and our DLC campaign and map extras are little bite sized chunks to tease you till we get around to the inevitable sequel.

At least Blizzard still gets it with Starcraft. I remember buying the Warcraft expansions (the RTS) and loving the shit out of that stuff, now we rarely get expension packs, we just get bite sized teasers to remind us of hey that game still exists.

The only other companies I can really think of right now getting it right right now are Nintendo with their constant free Splatoon update s to keep the game fresh and exciting to come back too and what Machine Head did with Wolfenstein, a proper fucking DLC like expansion in The Old Blood.

What? Of course not, but do you think the artist gets paid for each DLC item sold? Of course not (or I at least don't think so). They have a salary and whether they get paid for working on the main game, dlc or another game is irrelevant. DLC or no DLC they get paid regardless.

Naughty Dog's really gone down the toilet, huh? They used to be above this.

Will wait for a GOTY edition with DLC on disc.

TLOU GOTY Edition still didn't include the microtransaction DLC weapons.

Also I love how he basically says, yeah, the DLC are better than what the base game offers, but only new players will buy them! How stupid can you be.

What? Eric Monacelli is not at ND anymore? Well better him than Arne. Infinity Ward has some good head hunters around ND, another departure there.
