PlayStation 4 sales (sold-through) hit 30.2 million worldwide

I really wonder how they track sold through numbers now. It was fairly obvious for the first year, when the channels didn't have many PS4's in stock, but now? Since they even count to 0.2 million their method seems to be precise. Anyone wants to chime in on this?

Inventory management + install base analysis based off connection and known metrics.

The first party software lacking brings up interesting point though. Like many are already saying, third party multiplat plays bigger and bigger role as time passes, and Sony diverted more energy to make machine to server the purpose. I must say they were very smart doing so.

Historically, Nintendo first party games are the only ones that ever truly continue to sell consoles.

Halo to some degree, but still not as much as Nintendo games.

Third party games are the majority of sales. People who keep saying how they don't understand how the PS4 sells so well with a lack of first party games don't understand sales in general.

Just to put this in perspective the last announcement we have is that Sony had shipped 29.3 million units by Sept 30th. That means in just over a month they managed to not only sell through their existing stock but also an additional 700k units BEFORE we even made it to Black Friday sales.

Console is great but first party software wise a letdown for now. So I really don't get how it's selling so much. Congrats to them anyways.
Next year it's going to explode

10 million sold in 6 weeks? No chance. 4.1 million PS4's were sold in the last 6 weeks of 2014, and it's not doing more than double that this year.

I said end of January, 30.2 million is what has already been sold so as we speak 35 million has probably been shipped already for Black Friday & more will be shipped for Christmas & more right after that.

Yeah, consider this is the damage they've done without their heavy hitters. Next year they have this

Think what you want, but understand the scoffing that will accompany your oft repeated, unfounded assertion that's viewed through the lens of your particular bias.
Bias? I own all of the consoles out there. In any case I don't want to derail the conversation, I've been enjoying my time with my PS4 a lot. Still, we are facing an incredible success here and - even if maybe exclusives are not that important evidently - these numbers are still surprising to me. PS2 was packed with exclusives and it practically had no serious competition...

I think the main reason the PS2 didn't sell faster was because it was heavily supply constrained at launch. The US only got like 500K to sell at launch.

The closest competition does not have a great variety of good exclusives either so what do you want consumers to do? Stop buying consoles?

you're enjoying a product a lot, why are you surprised it's selling well? I don't quite understand the logic here.

It's not rocket science. Sony got out the gate with a bang and nailed the PR/social network messaging, while MS did the exact opposite. It snowballed from there as they became the market leader, were able to broker deals with the biggest third party games, and became "the place" for people and their friends to play these games. Same shit 360 did last gen. It should put to rest this fallacy that your average consumer walks into a store asking themselves "Which console has the most exclusives?" as opposed to "Which console do all my friends have, and which one will I be able to play CoD/Battlefront/Destiny with them on?"

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
This is absolutely fucking crazy numbers

Agreed. So far this gen I've felt like I've been going through the motions. Sure there have been some good games but nothing I've been passionate about. However with Horizon Zero Dawn and PSVR along with its console exclusives that all looks to be changing next year and I have Sony to thank for that.

Cause we are in the ball park of best selling console of all Times and I don't think we are nearly there in terms of quality if we don't consider only the hardware, imo. But yes I'm not disturbed by this in the slightest, Just surprised.

So now there's a realistic chance they'll finally drop the price of Vita memcards, y'know, with the PS4 doing so well and all?

Phenomenal numbers. They made the most powerful, innovative, and developer friendly console, and customers are rewarding them accordingly. It's really something to realize that they've achieved all of this without hitting $249.99 and without an Uncharted, God of War, or Gran Turismo sequel gracing the console.

I remember 2 years ago when people were saying Xbox One would destroy PS4. Absolutely insane. I predicted 20 mill by end of year but they'll probably do 33+. Holy fuck.

Anyway, congrats! Well deserved, what a great console! Now for 40 million.

Update on what I wrote.

There’s a few ways to identify sell-through figures with relatively high levels of accuracy. Generally companies use a mix of multiple identifiers, especially when they can with inventory where they can track activation, such internet connectivity and account creation/hardware activation.

Firstly is inventory management.

Sales departments throughout the world are quite effectively on-top of their game when it comes to 2 metrics, called :
Sell-in ( how much they sell to retailers/ship to distributors)
Days in inventory (how many days it takes for a retailer/distributor to clear their existing stock to zero)

By getting the updated sell-in figures from different regions around the world, and then reducing the stock holding estimates of approximately how much stock is at retailers/warehouse, we can extrapolate sell-out figures quite accurately.

And companies that sell things like smartphones and game consoles can do secondary verification of the above through analysing the activation of the consoles.

Through repeated comparisons over different time windows, they can very accurately extrapolate how many % of PS4 owners never connect to the internet by comparing hardware activation numbers at different points of time vs their estimated sell-out figures, and then make assumptions that if you have X amount of activated PS4s, there are a certain % of customers who never connect it to the internet, so X+% = sell-through figures.

Just checking the Wii in comparison and it would be in the 35-40 million ballpark in the same amount of time. Goddamn the Wii was a monster

Can we at least get to page 10 before we commence the 'PS4hasnogames/I don't get what people are playing on it - diatribe?

If there is one thing that need to be applauded it's how Sony handle PS4 supplies. The PS4 barely experienced any constraint despite selling like gangbusters. Just incredible.

Wow, what a tempo. Seeing Sony on the top like this brings back memories :).

How should we tune our expectations for future now when Japan is basically gone frome home console sales?

What would be really good number for ps4 in the end?

The best thing about the "I don't understand" posts is that we can, every month for the US and every week elsewhere, actually SEE why people are buying it through simple software charts.

It's not a mystery.

I think Japan can turn around if a few developers can get their games out.

Nothing like it used to be but right now it's like DOA

Because exclusives don't sell consoles. It's who has the best performing franchises.
