NXGamer first look at XboxOne version of Just Cause 3 (hint: it's baaaaaad)

Dude its not even comparable to fo4. I have played probably around the same amount of fo4 as that and havent come across anything as terrible as the fps drops in Just Cause 3. Its honestly a worse technical mess than anything ive seen on the system

On consoles? There are definitely caching issues on FO4 on console with some 0-20 fps drops. Maybe not as many and the game usually manages to get itself up to 30.

JC3 seems to be in a somewhat similar boat but as a fast-paced action game it may impact the play more.

Why can't they use GPGPU to offload physics work to the GPU?

Because rigid body physics are better off on the CPU. There is a reason my most if not all GPU physic simulations are limited to gameplay-innocuous stuff (hair, clothing, dense particles).

I know its pewdiepie so dont kill me but look how rough the plane bit is on his machine

Interesting. I didn't see specs listed anywhere in the video, do we know what he's running this on? That kind of hitching makes me think it's asset streaming/loading but who knows. Does he do capture/streaming on the same machine he's playing on?

According to a site of his as of November 2014:

I had the PS4 version for about a week. While I can confirm there are long re-load times for retrying the challenges, it never went down to 0fps like in that xbox video (played for more than 40 minutes straight). It does slow down when there's a lot of explosions very similar to what's show in the video though. I would definitely say wait for patches and see if it fixes the issue for consoles if you were planning on picking it up.

been watching spamfish on twitch and his seems smooth as butter.

Yeah, cool. Basing of what Xamtheking posted about his specs, a 760 with 2gb ram isn't doing him any favors for sure. I'd think manufacturers would be tripping over themselves to provide pewdiepie with the latest and greatest in hardware but I guess his primary demographic isn't the titanx buying audience.

Because there are a lot of explosions happening, I thought they could have been able to offload some of the CPU load to the GPU. Thought wrong?

Seems like this is SE pushing for the holiday market. Publishers will never change. The quick buck is everything to them I guess.

I do not think any one of the devs wants the game out in this state.

The weird thing though is apparently it went gold about a month ago. Maybe they just REALLY wanted to make sure they had it on shelves in time, but it's odd that they didn't take some of that time to optimize it.

I imagine they probably have been working on it, but that patch may not have passed cert yet. Is there any word of a day 1 patch?

People always say this but the game had a planned release date; the studio have a responsibility to match their dreams with reality.

SE made a mistake not delaying anyway - clearly the New Year would be better performance wise but also I expect the games going to be lost against so many open world games of 2015 - especially on the coattails of Fallout.

The problem now is the same WB faced; theres no economic reason to improve a game this broken - they blow their marketing budget in the first week and even then if they fix the game many people will already have turned away.

I played dozens of hours of JC2 on PS3, it looked and ran great. At the time I really thought it was the best looking game on the market.

It's sad to see that Avalanche screwed this up.

Yeah that sounds kinda dumb.

Then again I think a month isn't a whole lot of time if problems run deep i guess.
Just making an uneducated guess though. Maybe it's all the time they would need.

Yes, I totally agree the devs didn't meet the date. I'm not implying they can do no wrong but at the end of the day someone selling this game to people has to go "fuck it" and give the go ahead.
That's what I don't get. It's been shown many times that basically noone wins in this scenario maybe aside from investors with no long term thinking.

I am not sure if you are wrong, because I have honestly no clue as to what is happening always in a single frame in this game. But the type of physics on display seem to be normal rigid body physics, which has been customarily always been done on the CPU, even in engines that otherwise use GPU physics. The reasons for which are because CPUs tend to do it "better" as I understand it. If some game world object interacts with gameplay code, and is not just purely visual, then you can bet that you want the CPU to be on it afai understand!

Just Cause will always be a game meant to be played on PC.

With that said, hopefully something can be done so those with consoles can smoothly experience the game too.

They use Havok in this game. AFAIK the engine is CPU only still.

What I don't understand is, how outlets like this (Playstation Access) are showing (what is proportedly to be) PS4 footage, that doesn't appear to show much (any?) of the dramatic framerate issues highlighted elsewhere.

Either it's careful choosen footage, or they are running the PC version

very hyperbolic. Can you post evidence? it should be pretty repeatable for a share button upload.

Sure I can.

Go to ustream/mmarsu to see my saved jc3 vids. You dont even have to look for parts where I do chaos it dips constantly. Otherwise Ill stream again a bit later. Im selling the game later tonight tho. Dont want to subject myself to this unpolished shit.

A great fun game, marred by terrible technical disasters

Well this is disappointing. Just Cause 2 looked and ran very well on 360/PS3. I was expecting this game to be another solid release on consoles -- especially new, more powerful consoles vs what Avalanche dealt with for last gen -- but nope. Looks like I'll skip this game for good.

Yeah but they achieved console parity...

900p vs 1080p, isn't it?

Video in OP is a little bipolar. He says at one point the performance issues "definitely" don't hamper the fun of the game. A few minutes later he says that it's so frustrating it makes you want to shut off the console.

I can guarantee thats not ps4 footage!!!
Lol. Yes it is. I'm not saying huge fps drops not happens on ps4 and I haven't the game personally, but I have seen a bunch of walk through which it seems runs fine. Maybe I haven't seen yet the more demanding explosions, but I will check. Surely there are area where runs fine, absolutely.

Well Playstation Access have assured me it's the PS4 version, so.........IDK what to say.

If my copy runs like that, I'll be happy.

Wait a second, I said there are situations where runs fine but I will wait DF face off before to expect solid fps. I noticed drops during the explosions so I can't guarantee anything.

Yes it is! I have the game already. It plays just like that post patch. I hope they put out another one soon to decrease the challenge reload times and smooth it out a bit. Like I said earlier, it won't (at least I haven't seen it) drop to 0fps like in the xbox one version but you will encounter some slowdowns. Don't think it's related to the server connection because I disconnected it and still does the same thing.

Probably fine. Those processors are so far beyond what the consoles are running.

I'll find out soon enough I guess. I'm assuming my 3570 will crush it OC'ed or not.

I ask myself the same thing ;). Waiting for the performance thread before buying.

I have not been this excited for a game in years. It looks so much fun. I don't get how you can enjoy gaming but be so upset about a slight loss in fps or 1600 rez.

Back in the day it used to be called slowdown and it was awesome.

I look forward to playing this kick ass game with slowdown during the explosions and sippin' beer while waiting for it to load up a beautiful picture of gaming destruction.

I might be showing my age here...

Whatever version Playstation Access is using the retail ps4 version is nothing as smooth as that at all :s

You guys are crazy. This game has MASSIVE dips constantly on ps4. Ill make more vids but I thought streaming for hours was enough

Calm down children the average framerate is 27 fps. Are you spoiled?

Posts like this are exactly the reason devs and pubs think they can get away with this kind of thing.

It's also a great demonstration of why average framerate is far less of the end-all-be-all for assessing performance than many people think it is. In this case it's boosting it's average whenever the player isn't engaging the game in the way it's designed to be played. As soon as a few more physics calculations hit it drops like a rock. A game should be judged not by how it runs standing still doing nothing, but by what one can expect when engaging the game in the more strenuous situations that will arise.

Frankly in my opinion the huge swing in response time and visual feedback from dropping to sub-20 is almost worse than running it at that rate the entire time and at least having a consistent feel to adjust to.

It's so sad how weak these consoles are. I'm at the point where I want the next gen to start asap. Almost every single game this entire gen has had significant fps drops/poor performance.

I must be as well. I keep watching footage on consoles and all I see is a great time in an amazing looking world. Maybe a slight hitch here and there, some pop-in or loading times around 20-30 seconds is the worst I have seen. I have played and even enjoyed games with much worse going on.

It was in last gen also. FPS drops happens in every generation in most of the 3rd party games.
