Splatoon wins 'Best Multiplayer' and 'Best Shooter' @ TGA 2015

Best surprise of the night, and well deserved.

I actually had to stop playing it for a while because I got too obsessed with it, it's so good. I'm going to pick it back up again over the holidays when I have more free time.

I am usually in the PC master race camp when it comes to shooters but Splatoon is solely responsible for creating my gaming backlog across all of my entertainment options. I took a short break to come back to 2 new maps and about 7 or 8 new weapon sets to check out. I didn't really expect the same crew to be playing on my return but it has largely been the same SplatGAF - this game has legs for sure. For me, the fun is all in the movement and that will never get old.

Take it from a guy who's probably spend months of his live playing CS 1.6, the only thing that are truly lacking in Splatoon are Spectator mode, more community features(like Tournament Mode, Party VC, Leaderboards, more social features, more streaming features).

- Recoild control is present,
- Strifing is present, usually users with weapons that allow greater mobility use it and are notoriously difficult to hit.
- Accuracy is unparalleled for a console shooter without k+m controls
- Aiming is precise for chargers(snipers) hence the earlier gifs I showed of some charger play. While other weapons require varying degree of aiming.
- Gyro is miles better at fast/twitch like aiming - compared to regular control methods on consoles
- Jump shooting is prevalent, it's very important for rollers, chargers(snipers) & blasters, while other classes don't utilize it as much because it places them at a disadvantage.

I'd recommend you checkout some videos of Yugo1 or Dude playing before making such statements.

Yep. Another thing to remember is that it comes from experience as the devs are into competitive shooters and wanted to make one of their own. It makes a lot of sense that this stuff would be present.

Here's an example to show what I mean in my previous post:

Remember the Camp Triggerfish glitch that allowed you to jump over the gap in mid? The dev team instantly patched it out.

This would be the hardest jump to pull off in the game. Besides breaking the map balance, which is probably the main reason for its removal, mastery of this jump technique would give players a massive advantage over those that simply can't do it. Therefore I'm glad it's gone.

yeah definitely. it's like a shooter made for people who like platformers.

It legit took me by surprise when I saw it won last night so it's nice to see that the refreshing underdog win :). I mean who expected Nintendo's first shooter in a loooong time to win against the console FPS juggernauts like Halo/CoD? That's saying something. Even in it's short time, I really think it now belongs with Nintendo multiplayer greats like the Mario Kart and Smash Bros series. I love shooters in general and played all the others minus Destiny:TTK(only vanilla) and I definitely played Splatoon a looooooooot longer and no lie, I've never had such intense gunfights as I've had in Splatoon's. While it's gameplay concept is really simple, the depth in "inking" is crazy as it does everything in the game whether it's painting, splatting an opponent, making trails, hiding, shooting opponent's feet to slow them down, etc and you have to use everything once you face someone who's just as skilled. Splatoon deserves all the love it gets plus much much more and I really hope that Nintendo is working on a sequel for the NX......at it's launch :).

Not really, I play online and coop what I would call shooters, games where recoil control, accuracy, selecting gun attachments, quick to aim, dealing with flinch and doing the good stuff like strafing, jump shooting and what i would call GUN PLAY is the order of the day. Accuracy, recoil control, feathering teh gun, quick scoping snipers....I just dont see it at all in Splatoon...

I'm fucking dying here lmao

I had definitely expected it to win, but even so, well deserved. Best Nintendo game since Super Mario 3D World. It'd have also been great to have it in the Game of the Year nominees instead of Metal Gear Solid V. Really didn't like that game.

Laugh all you want, I can never see such a game taking priority by console gamers who play COD and Destiny and shooters that sell 20 million.

And laughing at gun control, when a gun kicks at 10 o clock and you have to control its recoil to be accurate, feather the trigger quickly to help reset the sights..centre speed....you guys really are on a different page.

Go read Hey den and the depth of the gun analysis in COD for one example...and then comment.

Would I call garden warfare a 'gun play shooter' - no I would not. you point and shoot peas or whatever, but there is no real 'gun play'. Do I enjoy garden warefare - yes it was fun, but its not a gun play shooter to compete with what I believe shooter fans want on console.

These games are fun but will make no head way into the really popular shooters imo.

This happened to me as well. I haven't played the game in a couple months, because I actually started noticing some potential personal problems. It's the first time I've actually gotten worried about getting addicted to a game.

I plan on playing it again soon but I'm going to have to set some strict limits for myself. Yes, the game is that good.

So are you saying Splatoon isn't a shooter you like or that Splatoon isn't a shooter at all cuz those are 2 very different arguments.

I microwave steaks.
It's hard to play team based games without communication, because I want to take matches seriously. At least the gunplay is good.

Lets take the garden warfare example as that does not bring out the Defenses....That is a 'fun' shooter I guess, it does not really have gun play and yes it has quite a few different guns...But the appeal and audience is VERY different and is a fun distraction..

I would put Splatoon into the same category, not saying its bot a great game, but some posters on here thinking it would worry activision like i read in some posts is what made me post as its just missing the point by a mile

You do realize the award was for "Best Shooter," right? Not "Best Gun-Play Shooter"

Splatoon may very well end up being my GOTY. It's extremely fun, polished, and the most unique game all year. I love how it's evolved over the months too.

I was not at all expecting Splatoon to win, and it definitely deserves it. Competitive play in this game is fantastic, and can be a whole other level of fun if you join a proper squad. The squad I'm a part of takes part in tournaments, we placed 2nd in one of them :)

I have around 250 hours in the game, but I know some who are probably double or triple that.

So, its a 'fun distraction' (new code word for 'kiddy'?) Because it doesn't have accurately modelled AR15's or whatever? Lol. And mentioning Destiny as a game with better gunplay? It's 30fps, the PvP is awful and, like all console shooters when you compare them to Splatoon, it controls like crap.

This is gonna sound weird, but even though I think Halo deserved one of those, I'm kinda glad to see Splatoon get it? We need more weird, creative games like it in the genre.

Hell, we need more weird, creative games like it in the industry. So props to Nintendo for this :)

Preconception that's all this block of text means...cod is just another shooter in the go bro scene, just play cs then if you want to compete. These colorful games Nintendo is making must make you guys really uncomfortable when they start entering the competition scene.

huh?

anyways, basically you just dont like the game because it doenst focus on gunplay as you call it, well that's fine, splatoon is a game that focus on positioning and territorial control (in any of the modes). But it is a TPS, just not the kind of shooter you like.

Completely deserved wins. The naysayers must be judging on the unusual cartoon visuals alone and dismissing all it has to offer.

You want to understand why some people dismiss Splatoon as a shooter alternative to the main shooters in the market, I explained why in a little detail.

Its not the cartoon stuff its the gun play which I tried to articulate is why the destiny, Halo and COD are lumped together and Splatoon is a different demographic APPEAL imo.

Never said I did not like spatoon, just EXPLORING reasons why some dismiss it as a shooter in the COD / Destiny / Halo / BF category.

Have not played Splatoon, but of that list I would have been surprised if it didn't win best Shooter. It's the only innovative one on that list. I'm not even sure why Destiny's expansion is up there.

It's not the COD/Destiny/Halo/BF category. It's the shooter category.

I don't think anyone cares what people who dismiss titles out of hand without playing them thinks. I mean, it's a message board, so you can share it anyway, but don't expect anyone to really give any thought to someone who does that.

Anyways. Im surprised again at Nintendos ability to move into different genres and carve out a successful spot in them. I remember when the rumors were floating on IRC and message boards about Nintendo making a fighting game. Back in the days of Tekken Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, the idea of Nintendo making a fighter was a joke unless it came from someone like Rare (who eventually launched Killer Instinct) But then Smash Bros came out, and all these years later its one of the top selling and best games in the genre. And now there is Splatoon.

Very impressive.

Pretty cool that it won both. I only got up to B+ ranking but that shit was stressful as fuck. Splatoon can be ridiculously competitive. Ranking up and then ranking down in the one session has to be one of the most frustrating things ever.

holy shit

Some people in this thread, SMH.

"I don't like it because is doesn't have X,Y,Z"

But us does have X,Y,Z

"That's not what I meant, I mean it doesn't have this specific subset of X, Y, and Z"

But it does

"That's not what I mean, I mean its not this other game that I like... It's not a cookie cutter of a subgenre so it shouldn't be considered part if the genre at all or considered for awards"

On topic, this was honestly a surprise. Good job Nintendo.

Well, yeah? It's a japanese game made for the japanese market and it shows. There's almost no shooter competition in Japan because everything is so westernized and puts them off so Splatoon has been very huge there. Meanwhile in the west there are so many shooters and so much competition for people's dollars because it's a dominate genre so something like Splatoon would get overlooked.

Doesn't matter if it's a different demographic appeal though as it's still part of the same category as a shooter, and it has much of the features you detailed in a prior post that Las7 also talked about.

Played the game for the month of release, I really liked it and the last boss of the Single Player Campaign is my favorite Boss Battle of the year. I was getting absolutely destroyed on the online multiplayer, but even sucking I have fun since I play to my strength by giving support and cover fire, I keep getting back to the game and while my buddies who are great at the game do all this crazy stuff and doing all the kills I dedicate myself to paint around in turf mode or attack from behind on other modes.

I have never felt a shooter be this inclusive and win or lose you know its because skill and strategy was involved.

I didn't even know debating about whether or not Splatoon is a shooter was thing people do.

Can we go back to arguing about whether one of the largest and most popular fighting games is even a fighting game? That was fun. Oh wait. No it wasn't.

I wasn't really watching it seriously, but I won't lie, I was really happy to hear it win best shooter. I had a lot of fun with it the month or two I got to play it until my Gamepad randomly stopped working.

Some just try to delegitimize things so hard.

Anyway, I'm glad Splatoon won, I actually didn't think it was going to, to be honest. It's a great shooter and it is very innovative in its genre.

Lol some people dismiss splatoon as a shooter? I've only seen one person do that and they are in this spread. And smash bros isn't a fighter? Lol aight.

I like Splatoon but I won't love it until they remove the shitty 2 maps at a time in rotation limit. Just allow all tha maps to be in rotation, all the time.

Isn't it a good thing though? That there's even a debate over it shows that Splaton is unique.

Maybe we should come up with a sub-genre that describes Splatoon compared to other shooters, like how Smash is a Party Fighter and MK is a Kart Battler.

Nintendo should keep using this pattern of looking at what's currently popular and instead of imitating them create something that captures the essence of a genre without actually being a shooter or whatever.

I do agree with this, I think that the optimal way to address it is to have 4 ranked rotations
- Single Mode/Two Maps(2 hours) - this would be the current ranked
- Random Mode/Two Maps(2 hours)
- Single Mode/ Random Maps
- Random Mode/ Random Maps

In the Random modes you could have a system to allow you 15 seconds to change gear after the mode/map has been selected.

Personally I don't see any other ways to optimize the system considering the Wii U's constraints. That would have to be addressed by the NX.

That leads me to think what exactly will Nintendo do with Spla2oon considering the NX titles need to address both the handheld and console demographic. There are certain features of the game that require a second screen if they want a person to play the same game independent of the device he is using. The way to address this is to allow the NX portable to use any sort of smart device or laptop as a second display.
