My GOTY so I'm glad it got some recognition. The only other major release from this year that I've played is Bloodborne

As well as allowing friends/parties to play on any stage and mode they want. I'd also like to see the ranked modes have a different rotation period as well as I stopped playing cuz it's always tower control. I actually like tower control but I don't want to only play that mode.
Not sure if this is what you're interested in, but there's a Private Match option that lets 8 players do any combination of mode and map (can't have more than 4 players per team though). It's how we usually organize practice matches and tournaments.

I get, mostly, Best Shooter for Splatoon. It's colorful and light-hearted, quirky and inventive in ways that Shooter v.2015 isn't.

But Best Multiplayer? Especially with the way they've locked on-disc content and released it week by week. And that's on top of the Wii U's -still- woefully inadequate online features. Nintendo gets such as free pass on everything just for being Nintendo.

The best thing about Splatoon's MP is that Nintendo's limitations on online also strip the worst elements of online MP. Imagine games where you don't have shitheads teamkilling and screaming toxic shit in chat.

So refreshing and enjoyable.

Oh, you want to bring speed into the equation? Let's go with some Timid Natured Kevin real fast. Afterwards, you can enjoy some Tower Control scoped charger, or a look into what ranked Splat Zones mode at S/S+ level looks like. If this is too much, you could always watch a relaxing bit of Turf War on the most neutral stage in the game at current.

Edit: How could I forget this gem?

These are amazing, especially that MLG rainmaker taking it at the very last second.

Splatoon wins by default because it actually works for me.

Bought Star Wars Battlefront but it doesn't like my router and I have managed to play precisely zero games. Moving house in a month so we'll see how it goes with my new internet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Splatoon is in my top 10 games of all time and is my GOTY regardless.

Just like how you can tell which Splatoon players have played too much CoD. "Congrats on the positive K/D! You got less than 200p. Please never get matchmade with me again."

Well you gotta have one player who can take out the opposing team while the rest claim territory. The best teams always have that one player that dominated in K/D.

That's something only a Nintendo game could get away with. If a COD or Halo limited itself like that it would get butchered by reviews and the fanbase.

Damn. I'm going to have to read through all of this thread, but based off the couple of pages I have read, there are going to be some super salty folks around when Splatoon starts picking up some GOTY awards next month. I'd back a top5 spot on gaf too.

And Splatoon WASN'T butchered for no voice chat before it was released? Please do some research.

Wait...people are complaining about Splatoon winning best shooter and best multiplayer?

Have they played Splatoon?

Still doesn't have voice chat though right? Hard for me to agree with a "multiplayer" award given to a game without voice chat in 2015.

Listening to squeaky-voiced 13-year-olds spout racist and sexist crap actually ruins multiplayer games for me, so i couldn't care less about there being no voice chat.

Although, i would hazard a guess that the vast majority of Splatoon players are 25+.

I keep trying to imagine if voicechat would really help this game and can't come up with a "yes".

I am sure really hardcore players might get some use of it but in a way, I kind of like that you make decisions by seeing rather than speaking.

I'm not anti-voicechat though, it's one area where I wish Nintendo would come around.

I didn't care about Splatoon getting these awards, mainly because I don't think these awards are that valuable, but the salt in this thread alone makes worth it. Congratulations Splatoon!

I'm kinda glad none of the big names won something this year. Hopefully this will make devs innovate more in the near future.

The biggest and most pleasant surprise watching the Awards. Splatoon has been some of the absolute most fun I've ever had playing a multiplayer game, and everything about it bleeds creativity and cohesive design principle. While I had my problems with a lot of the nominees and winners, this was definitely well deserved.

I doubt a few gaming journalists choices and opinions will have any sway into what pubs and devs do. But I am sure the sales of Splatoon shows their is a market for different stuff.

Looking at all the new moba shooters coming out soon its already happening I guess.

COD innovated hugely this year with 10 Specialist characters and abilities, from a robot with a mini arm gun to a guy with a flame thrower, and has put COD back on top of the pile for consoles (excluding FIFA and GTA of course)

I think a general voice chat would be a bad idea for the game. However, party chat would be fine just leaving it all between friends. I do hope the NX will have party chat at a system level.

Though don't ever think about adding me in those, I never talk on mic anywhere for anything or anyone.

Cool, I really wish Nintendo made more totally fresh AAA projects such as this one, without slapping one of their usual suspect's name on it. I hope Splatoon's success convinces them to do that. Splatoon seems worthy of praise, even though I have not played it.

Oh the things people would say in ranked....

1"spawn on me, we control the zone in oil rig"
2"hahaha i had sex with your mum, im gonna squid to it while we lose it"
1"voice chat doesn't fix anything"
1"and Im gonna lose 15points, because matchmaking put 1 random high rank dude on my team"
3"something in japanese"
4"something in japanese"
1"k"

The best decision they made in the last 5 years was not to have Mario and company as these main characters.

Seems like everybody wants it both ways. Splatoon is great because no voice chat and the community is full of hip 25+ year olds.

I just like multiplayer games that have voice chat and easy mute options. Or at least the ability to voice chat with friends.

A good solution would be having voice chat as an option, not mandatory. Lets everybody have what they want.

Would have gotten a sale out of me.

Kishima talked about getting their younger staff more involved IIRC and I hope that is a sign to come. It's definitely important as they got great ideas and worlds all their own they've yet to create.

Aren't the majority of players in Japan? I don't know how you've hazard a guess at their ages if you can't voice chat with them.

Loving the Meme about the 13 year old kids are the only ones playing multiplayer games. Doubt anyone here appreciates the Nintendo games are kiddy Meme. Have some of you never experienced party chat.

Nope, its on Wii U, of course they haven't.

Also glad game got some recognition, best multiplayer game I've played in a long long time. Not having any land line based internet and thus no way to play it right now is annoying.

A fanbase that's exceedingly toxic almost to MOBA levels?

Yeah excuse me while I play the world's smallest violin for their feelings on the subject.

Lots of it, or it was actually more like a gradual release than free dlc. It launched really barebones and got frequent content updates.

It's funny reading this then realizing Battlefront launched with even fewer weapons and customization options.

Why you gotta lump the entire Halo and COD fanbase into toxicity?

I believe if Splatoon 2 had voice chat Nintendo could moderate it better than most companies.

The only place I see voice chat helping is squad matches, where it would be between registered friends only. In such a case, yes, being able to verbally communicate with in you're team would help the more competitive teams do there thing (without relying on other devices). Otherwise the game is better off for not allowing you to speak to randoms. I absolutely don't believe the splatoon fanbase would be above the sort of behaviour we see in other popular shooters.

Laugh all you want, I can never see such a game taking priority by console gamers who play COD and Destiny and shooters that sell 20 million.

And laughing at gun control, when a gun kicks at 10 o clock and you have to control its recoil to be accurate, feather the trigger quickly to help reset the sights..centre speed....you guys really are on a different page.

Go read Hey den and the depth of the gun analysis in COD for one example...and then comment.

Would I call garden warfare a 'gun play shooter' - no I would not. you point and shoot peas or whatever, but there is no real 'gun play'. Do I enjoy garden warefare - yes it was fun, but its not a gun play shooter to compete with what I believe shooter fans want on console.

These games are fun but will make no head way into the really popular shooters imo.

You have clearly never played splatoon. And yes I love "traditional shooters" BLOPS3 is one of my favourite games this year, but after buying a Wii u last weekend and playing this, seeing all the depth to the different guns I just have to disagree, it's a shooter through and through. Hell, one week ago before I played it I would of agreed with you, I was buying it for some casual fun, just to run around splatting ink everywhere, but there is SO much more to this game. It has real depth.
