So apparently PS4 is jailbroken

I wouldn't say nothing. PS3's brokenness was pretty substantial + PSP being about equally wide open + Sony getting a negative ride out of a few lawsuits + other bits of unrelated controversies and numerous attacks on PSN and Sony online infrastructure.

http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/52451/update-targeting-cheaters-in-gta-online. 2400+ comments up until today and it doesn't seem Rockstar can do enough, if anything, to fix GTA Online for PS3. I hear it's pretty bad on PS3.

I think people who try to actively modify GTA Online eventually get their PSN accounts/systems banned. Pretty sure Social Club is another counter-measure against these mods. I can imagine people linking their PSN -> Social Club anyways.

I read that the thing in Brazil verified and it was something beyond account sharing.
Well question is how much effort they put into the old gens. I assume if it happens in the new gen they'd work more for it.

LOL at people thinking this will be doom and gloom for the PS4.

Piracy and cheating while certainly not helping PC gaming isn't stopping it's progress and it still remains a profitable platform for most game genres/companies. What makes you think it'll be any different on PS4.

Fuck, this will only encourage online-only games with server based data won't it?
No. That was going to happen, regardless. You can bet your ass that someone will use this as justification, however.

Similar to the fast food and grocery industries replacing employees with automation. Was going to happen anyway and they have been in talks with the automation machine vendors for years, but they try to play it all off as if it were a reaction to minimal wage increases.

Eh, I gave up on jailbreaking my stuff long time ago.

Can't be bothered to play the cat and mouse game everytime they release a firmware update.

Not to count the hundreds of hours of reading endless, badly written tutorials and the constant fear of bricking my system.

Cool for those interested though!

Looking forward to PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, PS Vita, and emulation for all the 8 bit to dreamcast consoles.

This will be amazing ;___;

Honest question - are you being serious?

Cos I see this kinda response a lot. If you want to emulate half of the above, Raspberry Pi2 or PC can already do all that dirt cheap with tutorials to rip your games everywhere on the interwebs.

As to the other half, PS3 emulation et al is going sloooooowly and hackoorzing the PS4 isn't going to change this.

Is the prospect of this worth risking your PS4 console for a banning or worse?

Geniunely curious.

because it's not the same thing, everything started from the webkit exploit on 1.76 firmware, now through the webkit exploit, they have found a kernel exploit and various groups of hackers are working on it from months.

more info here

http://wololo.net/2015/12/13/ps4-jailbreak-possible-cturt-confirms-ram-dump/

it's only a matter of time. Kernel exploit generally it's the start of the end...

Dickjustice highlighted the trophy part in his response.

Trophies, not the online gameplay.

I don't know why - but that's difficult for me to see using the Dark Theme :(

I feel like an ass but switching to light theme I can see the bolded instantly:

I just can't see the bolded with the dark theme. That's probably why I barely use bold, myself. Even worse when looking at an entire screen of light on dark. On light any bold pops.

Great comparison. It's very true.

I really dislike companies telling people what they may and may not do with hardware they bought, so if they manage to break it far enough to run custom OS etc - all power to them.

Thing is, they shouldn't have to. If I take my old Atari what's to stop me making my own game for it? Nothing. Nothing at all.

I totally agree with you in a perfect world.

Reality is that some people use this to screw with other people, and it really doesn't take to many to do so before you end up with a CoD on PS3 situation, where every game you go into has infinite ammo grenade launchers.

What I wish would happen is that as a product dies, the creators would open it up. That way you could still have the ability to make games for your old Playstation 2, while not impacting others negatively in the now.

yeah, kinda pointless, preowned games or games at deals are not so expensive...no point in pirate-ing at all....buy for x, play it, sell it for x-20% of price no biggie.....

Great so expecting flying assclowns in the near future on psn online.

How ironic would be to have the shitty half-assed payed service that sony provides being buried deeper in its own misery by a colateral damage like this.

PS4 being jailbroken won't do a thing for me, but I would certainly enjoy seeing PSN die painfully.

Yes, indeed. Piracy on consoles isn't a real threat right now because of online features... it's so easy for developers and publishers to avoid piracy... just do what Destiny do and that's it.

That of course still doesn't help out single player games but at this point given that the jailbreak only works on incredibly young firmware they probably don't have too much to worry about.

According to the forums they still got a dozen or two encryption keys they have to work through so it will be quite a while before we see any sort of piracy most likely.

Everyone who buys their PS4 games digitally?
Digital games are all I use. I have no desire to use any discs with my PS4 or Xbox Ones. So a couple of games on each system and I could be downloading 300GB if the games are 50 GB in size. Since I have two Xbox Ones the games get downloaded twice.

You need to pay to play PS4 online anyway, singleplayer is fine.

Of course it isn't. More and more games absolutely demands patches to be tolerable. It's a travesty. I can't imagine myself and many of my friends, and not only them, but most of the active user base, negleting ever going online.

Give me the ability to boot from PS2 discs and a suite of emulators hackers. Sony gets no love from me anymore with their current PS2 classics bs.

I used to be into modding when I was a teenager, but eventually decided it wasn't worth the trouble:

  • Almost every game released is practically in a alpha/beta state at launch, requires a "day 1" patch. (patching a pirated game is possible, but not convenient)
  • All modern consoles have routine firmware updates, which will often cripple any sort of hack/mod you had in place. You then have to "re-mod" your system to use the latest firmware features.
  • Many games (whether bought or pirated) require to be ran on the "latest" firmware and you have to jump through hoops patching the games to work, or you have to re-mod your system to use the latest firmware.
  • If you use your modded system online, you risk having your console and/or account banned, along with your purchases and/or trophies/achievements that were tied to it.
  • "homebrew" is neat to tinker with, but the gimmick of playing emulators wears off when your phone and pc can do the same thing.
  • The downloading/pirating novelty wears off when you obsessively "collect" over a hundred games that you will mostly never have time to play, especially when you have to keep researching workarounds in an endless cat-and-mouse game.
In the end I realized I was just hoarding games just for the sake of it and spending most of my time looking for the next game to get (and the latest mod to try) instead of actually playing anything. When I did finally play something, I would always just gravitate towards the same few games and ignore everything else. Once I made that realization, I decided to just give up on the "mod scene".

Now when I read about mods, my main worry is about online cheaters. Modding games can be fun, but not so much when people take those hacks online to ruin experiences for everyone else.

Wise up, what exactly is so bad about PSN?

Apart from a few instances of downtime (all services suffer) I have had no issues to speak of, even download speeds have been solid.

Why would you want to have service you use (?) get worse?

Ask the PSP, sold great, but games dried up because people were just pirating them.

IMO the PSP being jailbroken is a large part of why it sold well at all. I personally know quite a few people who bought PSPs just to use them as portable emulation machines. Outside of Monster Hunter and Crisis Core, the PSP's library was honestly really weak.

The Vita library is as strong, or stronger than the PSP, yet somehow it's struggling. Nowadays, when most people own phones capable of portable emulation, I'm not sure emulators on that gorgeous Vita screen would be quite as strong of a selling point (even if it did run Dreamcast)... but I'd still argue that the Vita's poor sales numbers are in some part due to the system never being properly jailbroken.

You're not modifying the hardware. :)

If this lets me emulate other consoles then I am so happy. I had fun emulating stuff in the ps3 back then. My tv doesn't have rgb ports so it sucks playing old consoles.

^This. CPS2 ran REALLY well on ps3, so since supergun setups are insanely expensive, we've actually used that for SF2ST in tournaments.

Better question is why would you wish that a service which is used happily by millions goes down in a blaze of fire? Slight selfishness me thinks.

A small price to pay for the superior experience.

·Downtime.
·Unable to join friends on occasion in a group party because NAT issues.
·Unable to join friends on ocasion in a game because NAT issues.
·Playing P2P even on first party games while paying to play online (LOL).

Oh, my PS4 is directly connected to a switch that goes wired to my router on a 300 mbps fiber connection. I have no trouble with download speeds but forwarding is ridiculously bad for 2015.

Also the few instaces of downtime that all services suffer.... No one takes a couple of downtimes per month on average, not even free services. Sony's SLA, again, for a payed service, must be among the worse in the industry.

This might be because I'm a mainly PC gamer and, to be perfectly honest, my standards using several online distribution platforms makes Sony's look like rubbish.

So maybe I shouldn't wise up but the people who only uses one service and has nothing to compare to, thus being happy with the service :)

This is exactly how I feel. Normally I'd be anxious about the effects of this, but given the way Sony have crapped all over classic support, I want the thing broke wide open. If it could do so without piracy being possible, brilliant, but I'm not sure how likely that is.

Uhm, NAT is your problem. Wanna borrow a match?

P2P is fine for some things, especially consoles where the data can't be tampered or manipulated.

Live went down the other day. Things happen, PSN has been pretty solid since the last few maintenance down times.

Errrrrr.. 3 of the 4 things you listed here are not "PSN" problems.

NAT issues are a user-side network thing, not a PSN thing. There isn't anything they can do about that. P2P multiplayer is a developer thing, not a PSN thing.

I have these same issues occasionally on PC. And Xbox. Networks are complicated. It is what it is.

I'll give you the downtime thing though. PSN seems to have an awful lot of it.
