Ding ding ding.

Not to mention thy're woefully underfunded for being a military branch. Leia had more resources in the Rebellion.

Eh. Death Star 2.0 was a planned Attack against a heavily defended Star station, while Darth Star 1/3 were impromptu raids to stop an attack on them. We don't really know how well funded she is in context.

Was getting caught part of your plan?
When Rey is drawn to Anakin's lightsaber I was thinking the children screaming were the younglings Anakin killed with it. That sword has some bad history. :p
My first thought too in fact

They should've at least put a super quick Mustafar reference in there, but I won't put that against it.

So who the fuck is Max Von Sydow's character? Dude seems in the know. He knew Luke, he knew Kylo, I think he knew Poe, I'm not really sure. I was so flustered at the onset that I actually watching a new Star Wars that I couldn't really pay attention.

Maybe he was a Resistance fighter. But yeah, his character was very mysterious. I feel like we missed something there

I'm beginning to wonder if he has the connection to Rey. Maybe like her version of Kenobi, a person who watches over her from a distance. And he kind of looks like Kenobi to boot.

Kylo and Snoke seem to know about Rey. Han and Leia seem to know who Rey really is. Maz seems to know after Han clues her in.

Is the Empire still around in this movie? It seemed like it. Plus, they are probably still larger than the New Republic.

The First Order is probably literally the first Order of the Empire, much like Order 66 and the rest during the old republic era.

I don't remember the Empire declaring Orders during the original series.

"Order" is the command to activate a "Clone Protocol", it's not directly linked to the Empire's rule

For example, this is the Clone Protocol 65
"If a majority of the Senate or the Security Council declares that the Supreme Chancellor is unfit for duty, the Chancellor is to be captured or, if necessary, killed."

You guys aren't discussing the important things, like did Finn get friend zoned with that kiss to the forehead? and does Luke now have a better chance with Rey than Finn? All alone in that remote planet.

What the hell, man, you think she's gonna french a comatose dude

Isn't he supposed to be getting a love interest of his own?

You know, when a Republic forms an army to fight external threats, they don't generally call them a Resistance... I think that's what makes it really confusing for everyone, because logically it makes no sense.

Yeah it's my only gripe. Naming it "the resistance" was basically an easy call back to "rebels" but it makes little sense as a name. Why not the Vanguard or something like that

I disagree. The film is structured in such a way that the main characters are, themselves, new to the whole Star Wars thing. They talk about the Original Trilogy the way newcomers to the series would. "I've heard vague stories about this shit, but I don't really know what's up"

Any context needed to follow what's happening in the film is provided by the film itself.

I just read your TFA review in the Mercury. I'm not usually in Portland, so seeing your name IRL was kinduva shock. Good stuff

So what's up with the Clone Wars series? I was high on this movie and watched the Clone Wars movie but it was kiddie bullshit about a baby Hutt and fart jokes? Does it become... not that?

It's so weird. The crawl identifies him as "an old ally" so I was braced for Lando cameo or something but it's an ally from the last 29 years apparently because he's nobody identifiable from the original trilogy...

Went to tumblr.com, typed in "Star Wars" into the search field, found this right on the front page

according to one of the art books he was an explorer who was old enough to know about the Jedi during the time of the clone wars. Apparently he was also very spiritual and was a member of some church of Jedi worshippers for people who were not force sensitive.

I liked the movie overall bit hate how much it copied from number 4. Third death star? Saving the rebel base at the last second? Eeesh. It would have been so much better if they failed to destroy it and the rebal base was blown up. Imagine the mind fucks. Of course Leia and the bots would have to survive somehow like being on a ship at the time. The end could have still shown hope in the Luke discovery scene.

I'm starting to think the Republic was full of idiots and the Emperor was right. How do you build a larger Death Star and nobody in the Republic knew or cared?
Perhaps less full of idiots but full of pushovers. Oh we support this 'resistance' but we're not technically fighting the space nazis with infinite resources capable of building planet killing superweapons. Oh hey what's that shiny red light up the-

Or like... The Army of the Republic lol. "The Resitance" makes sense as a rebrand in Episode VIII *AFTER* the Order shatters the civilian Republic.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cont...ublic:_Order_Initiation,_Orders_1_Through_150

There are a lot of Orders in the Republic. Order 66 being one of them. I think the First Order can also mean the 1st Order from the Empire in response to RoTJ. It's both a command and a group.

All the canon ones in that list involve the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic), i.e. The Clone Troopers, The orders are the protocols regarding them

The FO is just a remnant of the Empire, but not THE empire itself

There was an interview where they said they kept it to just those to keep the battle from being confusing to the viewer like in RotJ (or it could have been in the art book, I forget). Honestly, if that's the biggest concern you have, cool? I looooooved the movie, but there were some huge question marks of why and how things supposedly happened. Literally nothing about the starkiller base makes any sense, even in the context of the star wars universe.

Nah, no concern on that. Just curious.

Overall, I did enjoy the movie. I have it ranked below Empire and Hope and on par with Jedi.

But yeah, there were things little things that stuck out like "WTF?"

My thoughts exactly, along with I wish the rebel base got blown up. That would have been awesome.

About the soundtrack

I did enjoy, especially 'Han and Leia' and 'Jedi Steps'. Fells like John wanted a more... relaxed? slow? vibe in this one. However, wtf with the cover?

were they out of people to do artworks?

I look forward to the inevitable "What if Episode VII didn't suck?" on YouTube.

Meh, I'm gonna see it again on Tuesday, I can't get enough of it.

well not really...yet

Jedi Steps is amazing

Early on there were rumors about Leia and the republic being the ones to build a death star and I think that would have been a more interesting take. There was all this talk about the two sides being in a cold war over the 30 years and the ethics of needing your own super weapon could have been interesting subject matter, plus you could potentially have more massive battles with death stars firing at each other.

The map to Luke Skywalker thing doesn't make sense. Why would you leave a treasure hunt map to your location. They even had an easy fix in the film by having the map lead to the first Jedi temple and not to Luke himself. Have it such that Luke followed that map to get to the temple and people are retracing his route to possibly find him.

What's the consensus on Rebels? Worth watching? Does anything connect to Episode VII?

Rebels is more of a continuation of Clone Wars than anything else. Its been getting better since its start, but isn't quite up to the same height as Season 5 of Clone Wars. Last few episodes have been pretty good, though.

You know being the Republic who has infinite resources shouldn't they have their own weapons of mass destruction to deter? They never learn at all after seeing 2 deathstars.

I'm fine with Rey coming off like a "Mary Sue" even if I don't think she is because we're only seeing act one of a three part play, her mechanical and piloting ability could be inherited or part of the "will" of the force. We don't really know much about her really she and Kylo Ren kind of come off as opposite sides of a coin Rey is light side Anakin (and Luke) minus his issues while Kylo is dark side Anakin with all his issues and a lack of the restraint Anakin learned along with some of his own while barely or poorly trained. Going by Wookieepedia's sources Rey is 19-20 (another Luke parallel) while Ren is 29-30 so there's around a 10 year age gap between them, do we know when he turned and how long he was under Luke's guidance?

If by episode eight we find out she really is just an orphan with no ties to anyone significant then I might have an issue, especially with the force manipulation but I assume it's because of a powerful lineage and a borrowing of KOTOR plot points and if that's the case I'm totally fine with it. I can enjoy "oh shit" level game changing good guys (like Neo from the Matrix, especially when he became "The One" or well, Superman) but I really don't see it ending that way once Kylo Ren gets his head screwed on straight.

But breaking his force hold and proceeding to whip his ass once she remembers to use the force does make it clear who is more powerful right off the bat. Ren has been at this for years and gets bested by somebody who just tried using the force for the first time like 15 minutes ago.

Sidebar: the theory that Kylo's sword play is weak because there are no Jedi for him to go against gets thrown out the window by him losing the force hold battle with Rey. At first I thought well maybe Kylo is stronger in force holds and chokes because he likes to torment people but Rey even broke his holds like it was nothing.

First time that we know of and Rey remembers. Ren has several handicaps at that point and is unfocused, even the dark side of the force needs some level focus to properly wield, its reliance on emotions is also a weakness as it was in Ren's case and Anakin before him.
