Phantom Squad threatens to take down PSN and Xbox Live this Christmas

This has nothing to do with poorer countries, it's more about uninformed consumers, which you'll find more of in developed countries than in the "poorer" ones.

Yes it is mainly the uninformed. What I was getting at is in many years time people in countries that have had computers will be more educated about them. Obviously at this moment in time we have the older generation of people that didn't grow up around computers. But as time goes on more and more people will grow up being around a computer so will understand them more. The same will happen to countries that are becoming developed, so the pattern will repeat. I was talking about the very long term.

They sure sound like 12 year olds

But only at Christmas because we want to teach the people hoping to enjoy their presents that MS and Sony need to upgrade their cyber security. Wait, what?

I wonder if they understand the consequences of their action. They think they're untouchable? That's what Lizard Squad thought too.

Toronto Ontario.

Ps4 still working. It's slower for sure, but hasn't gone down yet.

Friends works. What's new works. Store works.

Gonna blame this on the million+ people logging on for the first time.

What security? All they're doing is overloading a server. This ain't hacking and it doesn't effect security.
This is TP'ing a house, not breaking into the house and showing the place needs a burglar alarm

I just reinstalled GTAV for the first time on my newly-formatted Windows machine. Even though Steam is working fine, I can't launch it because Rockstar's servers are down. I assume these guys are to blame.

Two-step DRM is pretty great, BTW.

Cool Facts: Game of War has been a hit since July 2013
What is interesting is, they act like they are targeting the big, multi billion dollar corporations with this stuff, while i would argue that, in reality the inability to logon and purchase games on those shiny new consoles hurts publishers and indies much, much more. Many companies who cannot simply absorb the days of lost sales. All in the name of...what? Cyber security? Yeah. Not really. It literally serves no one's best interests.
Are you implying that their ideas are juvenile and half baked?

Ps4, working, it's sometimes painfully slow. But a lot of new ps4s are being hooked up and started I guess. Xbox is normal to me, but I'm just using Netflix on it so yeah.

Yeah as another said, gotta be the influx of ps4s slowing it down. I can't see this as a consequence of an attack.

I think its much less about that, and more about being an asshole. Same as Lizard Squad.

I hate the media in things like this. Even tech media that should know better still write terrible articles. Yup let's attribute slow networks to ddos attack instead of the more logical conclusion that it's Christmas and a fuck ton of consoles are going online at once, possibly to get system or game updates or just buy more games. It's a shit show with people that should know better and try to educate the masses. And it's not hacking if you buy an hour of a botnet, nothing is getting hacked and even that wouldn't be the right term, use cracking for security breaches

Last year was a legitimate DDOS attack that crippled the services.

This year, the services are down/overloaded because of the traffic increases and any claims of an "attack" are most likely just kids pretending to have done something.

But the fact is that I'm playing BO3 on my PS4 comfortably, and no 12 year old kid did a damn thing to these servers. He's too busy playing with his new iPhone.

This is probably the best way to explain the situation. They're not hackers, or heroes, or whatever they want to be called.

Well then why isnt anything working?

A lot of people are signing in for the first time to set up their accounts or playing their new games? Now if this is something that happens all day then we might have a problem but remember a legitimate server overload can happen

I don't think that they have anything to do with this. The slowdown is due to new traffic and nothing else.

These guys are just begging for attention by trying to take the blame for slowdown/outages.

Systems going down and up all day is nothing new on Christmas, sad thing is no matter if *InsertHere*Squad is behind the thing or not, they'll get the credit due to the threat.
