Rumor: GFK Market Research Survey about Nintendo NX leaked

Fake, on the basis that no one would ever specify something as being designed for a halfway point resolution like 900p unless they were trolling.

Unless the res is mandated to account for multiple systems, as others have mentioned. They may need the games res to be able to be halved on the fly to a specific figure, for example, and so it would be wise to stipulate a target to developers. If it wasn't Nintendo, I would agree, but it is plausible.

FWIW, I can't find any evidence that Nintendo is a "client" of GfK.

I think it's more likely that this is speculative market research instigated by GfK themselves—which is much more akin to what they actually do—based off the NX rumours, which would make sense considering it's using the system's codename.

This guy gets it.

While I think Tamaki has exaggerated and taken liberty with most of his stories, I kind of believe he does have some participant sources.

Nintendo achievements and 900p/60fp sounds good to me!

Can't anyone make a survey that looks like that? There are some very talented people out there (remember the Smash Bros fakes?) so this would be easy for a lot of people to make up.

However, the 900p thing makes no sense, Wii U has (I think) aleast 10 games that output at 1080p, with Smash 1080/60.

The survey itself has been confirmed as real.

Don't believe any of this for a second but a handheld capable of 900p/60fps sounds far too good to be true.

A.. Ar.... Are we for real complaning about... 900p?????????

my goodness... I love you gaf

my exact reaction

C'mon buddy. It's 2016, 1080p has been the standard for years, even most new TV that are coming out are 4k. I'm the first one that enjoys the Wii U more than the PS4, but a new hardware with 900p as standard in 2016-2017 would be embarrassing even for Nintendo.

I'm not too keen on this info from out of nowhere, but whatever gets the popcorn popping and the rumor mill turning.

It makes sense if it's 900 across handheld and console, or if it goes 900 minimum on console.

Are we thinking the handheld will be 900 as well?

I don't think so; people are confused about the console being 900p, but considering the handheld versions of games would logically run at half the res in order to run well on the handheld.......it makes a lot of sense.

If we look at this from a technical standpoint:

Wii U:
Mario Kart 8 = 720p 60fps
Super Smash Bros = 1080p 60fps
Wind Waker HD = 1080p 30fps

3DS:
General Resolution = 400x240 (800x240 with 3D on) + 320 x 240 second screen.
Many games are locked to 30fps with a few running at 60fps like Super Smash Bros.

Now, if the leaks and rumours are to believed then the NX is a mix of the two systems in a more beefed up fashion. It'l be a home console and a handheld device, how this will work and how media can be played across the two is yet to be described but if this is true then a 900p/60fps aim for the system isn't crazy.

The upside (and downside) of the Wii U having a second screen/off the tv experience that requires you to be in close proximity of the Wii U home console, is that it used the full power of that console to produce a crisp high quality (720p-1080p) image. While if you can walk around with a handheld device we haven't seen anything come close to the quality of games like Mario Kart 8 or Wind Waker HD.

I remember been sat on a Bus (in 2012) and a girl was saying how she was really excited to buy the new 'Wii' from Nintendo because it was a tablet that she could carry around the city with her and play games whenever she wanted. I had to interrupt and give her the bad news, to which she responded with "Well, what's the point then?"

I also thing the idea of the NX having a double mode, such a high quality tv mode where everything looks sharp and amazing but when you transfer the game to the handheld device it drops in quality so it can run better on there -- IS UNLIKELY. Why? Because I doubt Nintendo would cause imparity within their own new system and nor do I think they can make a modern 1080p 60fps game run on just the handheld alone. I imagine something similar to PS Now, where your local network would be used as some sort of streaming station to stream the game to the handheld, however if this were the case it would need to be constantly connected to the internet when out and about, using 3G/4G or something similar. The most I imagine them doing is scaling down the consoles image from 900p to 450p or something similar.

Until we truly know more about the NX we can't really assume - just make wild guesses and conclusions based on surveys like this one that may or may not be true. But it is fun to just think about how Nintendo are going to overcome these ideas and create a parity within their own system let alone compared to 3DS and Wii U. The NX could very well be a visual step up from the 3DS and a visual step down from the Wii U - it totally depends on how hard they relay on the 'gimmick' they build this system around and how much power it requires on a CPU and Graphical stand point.

I'd be pretty happy with 900p.... if all games HAD to run at 60fps.

60fps as standard on all games would be awesome.

Still it sounds such a bizarre resolution to have as standard ..even on the handheld (unless the console is being bundled with its own weird screen/ VR or AR headset).

Why do people believe this shit time and time again? It's getting more embarrassing than the people who still think Half Life 3 is coming. Also 900/60 fps? Who is that for? Why would it even be included? Games can vary so drastically it has no significant to anyone to list. Especially when the Wii U could do 1080/60 (as evidenced by Smash), and so could all the HD consoles

On the cropped bit at the bottom:

"Using the criteria listed by bullet points above, please pick out the rumours you might have heard on the Internet about the NX"

What rumors? Wouldn't that make the NX less capable than Wii U in a certain sense?

What makes you think that some games running at 900p makes the NX less capable than the wii u? Maybe it's referring to games that are comparable on competing platforms would run at 900p/60fps compared to the 720p/30fps on their competitors.

We have no idea why they chose that wording - if any of it is real to begin with.

Aaaaand the first negative hyperbole surrounding NX is a reality.

Things like ''900p'' will stick, even if is incorrect information unless they invalidate such rumours immediately. In the case of this rumour being correct, it merely says something over the graphical capabilities optimized for 900p resolution, I would highly doubt it cannot output 1080p. Then again, suspecting low-hardware targeting 900p, as a tech-enthusiast, it would be dissapointing.

What Nintendo needs to do is be aggressive towards these rumours, if they are not true, instead of keeping their mouth shut. That does not mean giving any significant infoon NX, but rather just dismantle this rumour by telling via an official statement it is simply not true. These negative hyperboles can really damage the momentum they have build up, until this point regarding mysterious/eagerness to see what by gamers, as is evidenced by this thread and facebook reactions.

Nintendo marketing needs to step it up.

Guys don't jump off the deep end on this 900p thing. You should know better that all of the last generation consoles can have 1080p games if the developer so choose to do so for their software.

No. PC gamers with 980tis can't even "max out" titles. I have a 280X and I can't even max out titles at 900p. More over, PC games have even started "higher resolution" texture packs that are pushing the RAM limit up. Don't even bring PC and max settings into this.

I'm pretty sure I can max out new releases with my 980 ti at 1600x900, 60fps. I was playing Fallout 4 at 4K on the high preset last night at damn near a locked 60fps.

You can look up benchmarks for many new releases, and the 980 ti usually breaks at least 60fps at max settings at 1080p, and in some cases 1440p.

The 280x doesn't have even half the performance of a 980ti.

Regardless, my point was that 900p doesn't really mean anything.

Ugh, I bought a 1080p television back in 2007 and though it's ancient now by tv standards and has been demoted to the bedroom, it's ridiculous that some games and consoles still can't hit that resolution 9 years later.

I think you're over-worrying here a little. Random internet picture of a supposed NX related survey says 900p/60fps - that's not going to stick unless you get something more concrete.

sensor bar.

please god do not let that be included

Yeah that's like the only takeaway I got from this, I didn't realize until now that if I see another sensor bar then I'm out. I'm kind of at the point now where I want Nintendo's games but not their idea of hardware. All I want from them is a console with at least a manageable UI and a normal controller included in the box at no extra premium, plus a hard drive worth having. Even Bayo 2 is sitting there complete with wrapping on it since I'm sick of dealing with the gamepad and XCX only managed to pull me back in for a week at best.

I just don't see them taking that route though, they still seem stuck on having to break the mould for the sheer sake of it.

If this is true, I'll bet that 900p is the resolution of the handheld device. It makes sense, in a strange way, that the system is capped at the resolution of the handheld.

There was that old rumor that said the handheld's resolution was higher than you would expect, but lower than you would hope.
