Emily Rogers: Nintendo Working on Unannounced Wii U Game [Update: Paper Mario]

I haven't played a Paper Mario console game that disappointed me yet. Bring it!

Then again, looking at the trajectory of both IntSys and Nintendo's reliance on Amiibos, I'm only cautiously optimistic for this... when I would've have been positively ecstatic about this a while ago. We'll see.

So, possible Wii U 2016 release schedule looks like it has more games than 2015.

Twilight Princess
Pokken
Star Fox
Paper Mario
Pikmin 4
Zelda Wii U

vs.

Kirby
Yoshi
Mario Maker
Splatoon

That's a lot of games to release if NX is launching this year.

Nobody knows what platform Pikmin 4 is being developed for.

You're also forgetting Genei Ibun Roku #FE and Project Guard/Giant Robot. Last year also had Mario Party 10, Mario vs DK Tipping Stars, AC amiibo Festival, Mario Tennis, Fatal Frame, Xenoblade X, Art Academy and Devil's Third in terms of first party games. Either list everything or don't do a list at all.

So we know Nintendo works on a new Paper Mario but when will we see anything from it? What if we see it first at E3 or something like that? Doubt Nintendo will show it tomorrow...

When Miyamoto casually mentioned "oh Pikmin 4 is close to done" during SMM interviews last Summer. That is also literally all we know about it.

The way Pikmin 4 was announced is probably my favorite thing. The fact that's still all we know about it is incredible as well.

Nintendo needs to go all out with the NX at E3 so I doubt we'll see PM announced there. My guess is that we'll get the announcement in the next Direct (which will most likely be the day Corrin and Bayonetta Smash DLC are released).

It'd be pretty cool if amiibos were utilized in a way where you can have paper versions of them as partners. Paper Link or Samus would be pretty cool.

I wonder how much budget it takes to make a Paper character's sprite set. IS added the FE Amiibos as extra characters in both Codename STEAM and obviously Fire Emblem Fates. So, this could follow that...

Along with Paper Sonic, Mega Man, Ryu, Robin, Cloud, Corrin, or Bayonetta.
I'd say Paper Mewtwo, but The Pokémon Company....

Depends upon their function. If they're simple summons that do an attack or two, then probably not too much. However, full movesets for partners would be pretty difficult to do for over 60 characters.

These lists are heavily flawed and missing oodles of titles. It's probably more correct to say 2015 and what we know for 2016 are pretty comparable and that the Wii U as far as we know has pretty solid support from Nintendo this year. Of course, so did the PlayStation 3 in 2013 when PS4 launched. So I think the time of predicting a console's release based on if content has dried up for the prior one is in the past.

But this is Nintendo and they like traditional way of doing things as a company. IE - they have always announced and released 1.5 years later. Could be the same thing again. Then again, two skus, one could release this year too (3DS replacement).

But, we don't know. What we do know is the lineup is pretty good this year from Nintendo's side of things.

Then, speaking only of exclusives:
[2016]
Genei Ibun Roku #FE
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games
Pokken Tournament
Star Fox Zero
Paper Mario
Pikmin 4
TLoZ: Twilight Princess HD
Zelda Wii U
-eShop: Lost Reavers

vs.

[2015]
Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival
Art Academy
Devil's Third
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Yoshi's Woolly World
Mario Party 10
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black
Splatoon
Super Mario Maker
Xenoblade Chronicles X
-eShop: Fast Racing Neo, Affordable Space Adventures, Runbow

missing something?

2015 digitals are all must-have and from the other, Splatoon, Maker, Xenoblade and Yoshi are really good recived.
Animal Crossing, Devil and Mario Party didnt turn out well, while Kirby and Fatal Frame seems to be solid enough.

2016 so far... we can have an idea about Twighlight HD and about #FE and Pokken (because of the reviews).
Mario & Sonic probably is gonna be similar to the past entries.
Its all up to Pikmin 4 and Star Fox Zero. Zelda probably is gonna be a must-have. Im afraid that looking the last Paper Marios, maybe this one is gonna turn out not great... and well.... we have seen Star Fox Zero, so it have to polish a lot to change the opinion of those who try the demo.
If these 3 end up being a must-have, we still need 1 more to make it equal last year at least... well, with less desapoinment i guess....

about Lost Reavers... what the japan reviews said?

I cant see NX coming this year anymore, if is true that there is still titles unannounced comming in 2016....

... what games from 2015, were announce on 2015 as well?

edit: and indie games, in my site
Indie-eShop
, I got more than 150 games listed for 2016... but I dont know from there, how many are exclusive

I think Super Paper Mario is a great game, but it got completely over shadowed by Mario Galaxy release a few weeks later.

I don't think that has anything to do with it. SPM came out in the spring. It was basically the first big game since Twilight Princess at launch. And then there was another large drought until Metroid came out in August, with Galaxy following in November. There were empty spaces of nothingness on either side of it.

Who is she and why should I believe her? Hows her track record with leaks?

She's had a healthy track record, and her claim was also backed up by a few journalists here on GAF as well. It's reliable. If you want more info on her, a quick google would do you well.

Is it really deserve backlash? It wasn't a rule that it needed to have the same gameplay, it still looks and feels like a Paper Mario game.

Where did I say it deserves backlash? I'm just saying you can't act surprised that it got a lot of hate considering it was a huge departure from the other games. You act like a game is only made up of its charm and characters, when really gameplay is usually the most important part.

The comparison you were making was entirely dependent on your lists being complete (as possible). TheMoon pointing out that they aren't isn't being pedantic.

Pikmin 4 is not necessarily a Wii U title. It could be for NX.

Could be for mobile. Or, hell, maybe it's a QOL thing somehow. What do we know?

I agree that we don't know much and my pessimistic assumptions are just, well, assumptions that could (and hopefully will be) proven wrong but I can't shake this negative feeling. Unlike you I think Paper Jam is indicative of Nintendo's change in attitude towards Mario RPGs and that they will double down on focusing on the core Mario canon.

Hmm, the reason I'm not assuming much from Paper Jam is because 1) we just got Dream Team before that and that went fully original and 2) I wouldn't be surprised if AlphaDream simply decided they wanted to make an M&L game set in the Mushroom Kingdom after having one set in an original location of their own accord.

I don't have anything to base that on either, it's just a feeling here too. But similarly to the Paper Mario situation I don't want to make any assumptions when it comes to that series until we see their next M&L RPG.

I just don't really believe there's core Mario canon mandate in place when it comes to the RPGs just yet. There could be but we haven't seen enough games in their respective series yet to make that assumption IMO. We'll probably know soon enough with this new Paper Mario though. I'm not saying I'm not worried at all. :S

2016 is filled with outsourced projects. Zelda is surely NX compatible. Pikmin 4 we don't know anything about. Nintendos development teams are fully working on NX projects from the looks of it.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Pikmin 4 is coming anytime soon? Other than that one quote from Miyamoto, do we have any reason to believe that game exists?

I think it probably exists but Miyamoto was talking the exact same way about Pikmin 3 for years before it finally came out. Like far enough back where we didn't know Wii U was a thing and thought it would be a Wii game. So I don't think there's any indication that 4 will be hitting this year, just some time.

That's a lot of games to release if NX is launching this year.

Others have pointed out that this list is missing games, but even if it weren't, it's entirely possible that Nintendo's output this year could be that much larger than last year (regardless of NX). The important thing to remember is that it's not one group of people working on all of those games. Additionally, games take many years to develop most of the time. So it's possible that last year, most teams were still hard at work, whereas this year, teams may be ready to release. More at a time than last year just happens to be a coincidence, possibly.

But your logic seemed to be related more to the impending NX release. But I still think Nintendo wants to support the Wii U, so they'll keep putting out games for it. And especially since we don't actually know the NX's release timeframe, I think it's silly to speculate on that being a reason we should see fewer games than last year.

Besides the fact that one of the leakers is a woman, what differentiates this from any other leak? Are they all attention whores too?
FYI, attention whore is used for both men and women.
That said I think JetSetRadio's comment was unwarranted. ER has proven to be reliable enough.

Had a Wii U for two years now, have many of the so called 'best' titles on it. If Nintendo let it wind down with a couple of HD remakes and a couple of decent unannounced first party titles I would be very happy. The Wii U is going to be regarded as the most undersold console with the best software line up in time.

A quote from Miyamoto is the only thing you need to believe that the game exists lol.

I was asking if it deserved backslash generally, not that you implied it.

If this Paper Mario plays like TTYD, but doesnt have the charm and characters of TTYD and instead is like Sticker Star, it would get backslash.

The first two Paper Mario games are 50/50 on story and gameplay, which is why Super Paper Mario isnt really hated as much.

It's not going out with a couple of HD remakes. It's going out with Zelda, Star Fox, Paper Mario, Pokken, #FE and possibly Pikmin. Those are all huge Nintendo franchises and that's just what we know in January, the very first month of the year. If 2016 is the Wii U's last year it's going to go out with a bang.

People actually care about Paper Mario characters? Excuse the pun, but they are literally 2D in terms of personality.
It's just kinda nice to have some flavor and diversity in games, ya dig? What's kinda nice in the Paper Mario games is when they add a bit more depth and lore to the Mario world with new characters and locals to explore than what's traditionally explore in the games.
