Xbox One - my digital games won't start

You can't really complain about a roaming console not working with digital games when offline.

Digital allows you to do the game sharing thing when the network is up and running, but when it's not, you're still limited to playing on one system at a time, just like physical. And physical never allows for dual system play.

In your case, perhaps making the living room system the home console once XBL is back up would be the better long term solution?
You can transfer a Blu-ray from one console in your house to another whenever you like, however.

should mention that the ps4 uses the same sort of license check requirement and its just as annoying .....if you try and start your game while the licensing server is down you get a great big padlock (digital games)

i really wish they did away with this altogether
PStoo. And no, losing PSN doesn't break nearly as much offline functionality as people are describing here.

would be better if there was some sort of battlekey authentication or some crap as everyone has mobile phones these days

but even then you could just log yourself into as many of your friends consoles as you like

unless you're suggesting that you have to do 2FA every time you launch a game, which is worse IMO

That's the choice between digital or physical. Digital = you can only play it on your home console when offline, but you can share the game with another console (essentially gettting 2 for the price of 1) when online. Physical = play on any console at any time., but need two copies to play simultaneously on two consoles.

Losing XBL completely doesn't stop anyone from playing their digital games. As has been mentioned multiple times, taking the console offline (or pulling the Ethernet cable) will let any owned games boot up just fine. This includes apps like the Blu-ray player.

The one month that's been a bad month for XBL and everyone thinks this is the end of the world. Everything will be fine. Let's have some patience. Yes, I know not everyone has that much free time to game, but still.

I would be pissed too if I came home and wasnt able to play any of my games. I get it.

yeah it's cool, no big deal, it's not like we're paying for this or anything. just chill

I wish MS would be more upfront about this, explain to us why this is happening so often now and why exactly it turns the console into a absolutely useless black brick at that moment....how the hell is Netflix not working? How the fuck is it going to say something went wrong and that you may need to insert a disc for both Netflix and a blu ray....really Microsoft?

Just started up Rocket League, was changing my car and the game closed and told me to insert a disc.

That's annoying to say the least.

Not working for me either, hasn't been for about an hour and a half. Hopefully it comes back soon, this is the first period of time I could allocate to gaming in the last few weeks.

Online services go down from time to time thats just life. I'm not a XB 1 user but my worry would be if you arnt game sharing (so you have the master account) what is stopping offline content from launching? It's a bit worrying Microsoft could intentially or unintentionally (as appears here) block all your purchases one day...

It's not like i will get less of these issues if i just leave the Preview program, right? I was just talking to someone and he has very little issues he said, he's not in the Preview program. I doubt it has anything to do with it though. Maybe he's just in a location where they aren't often affected.

This is a server thing, it likely has nothing to do with the preview program.

I fucking damn well will complain. I can't watch Netflix YouTube Hulu or blurays on my living room console.

Yeah, makes sense.

Well let's just hope things pick up again soon. I have a lot of free time, but plenty of people don't and when they say they only have a few hours for gaming and at those times it actually is down...i feel their pain. That shit sucks. MS turned the Xbox One into something very great, now it's time to improve that XBL too. It's not like they don't have the money for it.

Hulu, Netflix and YouTube are online services that require an active XBL connection. It's a silly requirement, but the same requirement is on PSN so that's moot as a point of comparison. If the console is offline, you're not going to use online services.

As for the Blu-ray issue, there is no reason why you can't play BD movies offline on your living room Xbox. So long as you have at least one account that has downloaded the BD software and is set as the home console, it'll work as a BD player until the end of time when offline.

PSN is not the same man, stop spreading misinformation.

PSN will never prevent you from playing your digital games when offline on PRIMARY console ever. Netflix and other apps will never be off regardless of PSN status.

Um isn't this a super simple fix?

From my understanding you just make sure your console is set as the home console and then go to settings and choose offline. Are people not doing this?

seems like some people have their console set as their home console and still in fact can't play their games

I can usually watch Netflix/Hulu/YouTube when PSN is down.

It is the same.

An Xbox One home console (aka primary) that is offline will always be able to play any purchased digital games. This is also true of any Xbox 360 console.

The only Xbox One consoles that cannot play purchased digital games offline are those that are not set as home.

There are games on the PS3 that require a PSN connection to launch, no matter what. And the Netflix app, at least on PS3, won't connect to anything if you're not logged in to PSN.

If Sony has changed that for PS4, kudos to them. On PS3 if PSN is down, I can't connect to any of those apps. They all demand a PSN login on launch.

Yeah but then Sony can't reveal users have watched a billion hours of entertainment PR like Microsoft can with Xbox Live. I think we know who did the right thing.

So is this just spotty? cuz 2 hours ago I couldn't launch a game but now I'm watching Netflix for the past 30 min

Someone should make a thread about Xbox live issues the past week.

No joke, almost every single day for the past week Live has had some sort of problem. People are losing their shit on XB1 reddit in their megathread. Its up to 1600 comments right now.

XB1 gamefaqs board has almost every single thread about the live issues.

Something is definitely going on. Some group is consistently ddosing them every day. Its crazy.

In fairness my mind read that as PS+. However I do recall watching Netflix on my PS3 when PSN was down
