Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

I wonder if Sony will follow up with this..

I hope. Xbox are smart though, because if Sony don't they're only going to have Xbox/PC compatibility, which they've already done, and if they do they'll look really good for being the ones who bridged the gap and remove the "my friends are on PS4" selling point.

My brother and I have been wishing for this for so long. Too bad this wouldn't work for GTA V and ESO (yet).

Sony better pony up.

I hope this will make people realize that the Dualshock 4 is simply awful for shooters once a shooter gets cross-play

What lol? That's subjective to the max. I have both and I do a lot better on a DS4.

I notice everyone keeps bringing up big AAA third-party titles (like CoD/Battlefield/Destiny) but, this seems to me like it's clearly only meant for id@xbox games. Like, why else would it be specifically Chris Charla announcing it under the title "ID@Xbox Updates?"

It's still cool, and all, but, not so sure it means all third-party games from big publishers can do this, yet.

I'm not sure if the Final Fantasy XIV Dev Team will agree with this:

"...and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players"

Just imagining all the big multiplayer games supporting this has me excited. Destiny, Battlefield, Battlefront, CoD, The Division. The player polls would be huge! That would be pretty sweet.

Holy shit. A moment we've always waited for in consoles.

I don't know how many games will support this in the long run.

Shooters most likely won't because PC players would slaughter console players

MMO's probably will happen assuming MS softens their stance on paywalls there

Sports titles, particularly EA ones are probably going to jump on this

Wow! Xbox crossplay with PC and PS4 is such a win for everyone. These are the kinds of things that create goodwill with gamers. Keep it up, MS!

MS is really changing.

It's a new era.

For them it's basically perfect. "Why would you buy game XYZ on Xbox when there are way more PSN accounts out there?" becomes a meaningless argument and now it is up to Sony to be the bad guy if they say no.

I like this Microsoft. Fisty.

Whatever Sony has cooking up at GDC it must be a freaking megaton. Why else would Microsoft announce such huge news. My guess is they wanted to try and take some shine off of Sony's boots before Sony shoves it right up their arse. Or maybe they did it out of the kindness of their hearts and are actually listening to what gamers want.

So my question since PS4 and PC are already crossplay on rocket leauge is this:

Is it possible and/or how easy is it to find specific players (friends) cross platform? Or are the players on the other platform just tossed into the matchmaking pool and no way to choose to single them out?

This is hella cool.

A buddy of mine back in Idaho was planning to start a group playing The Division, but due to some financial setbacks he wasn't able to upgrade/repair his PC and so, if he ever gets the game, it'll probably be XBone.

Which sucks, since I was planning on the PC version. And I have a PS4, so even the console version wouldn't be an option.

Hopefully The Division gets updated to support this.

shhh, let them get over-excited and watch the disappointment.

As a huge supporter of cross-platfrom play, this is really exciting news!
Curious how Sony will respond to this and whether many devs will actually implement it.

This will not solve the " my friends are only on ps4". It will either be only used for matchmaking or each game will have their own friends list. You will not send messages or games invites from xbox to stream or PS.

Sounds like an interesting and surprising move, but as ever with MS I'm going to wait to see the small print before getting excited.

They can't be the bad guy if they allow it already, they already said thy would. Theres no bad guy in this..well except if dev choose not to do it

Y'all are being mighty optimistic. 😐

As far as I understand, it's up to the dev to implement that sorta crossplay capability.

Meaning, we may have a few big budget games that offer this, mostly using their own networking stuff like origin, and there'll probably be a slew of smallish indie type games that attempt to offer it, but I kinda doubt we will see any of that connectivity in the overall majority of games. And that's not even considering the restrictive licensing of console libraries, including network ones. I'm guessing here, but I'd be willing to bet most manufacturers have lockout clauses and require extensive paperwork to enable that sort of functionality.
