Ratchet & Clank - Review Thread

"GAF's biggest wanker"
Cons
Ship battle is terrible
Ugh, not a big deal, but I would have hoped they had figured out by now how to make the ship combat more compelling. I wouldn't say it's been terrible, but it's definitely been lacking in previous entries.

Taking a step back and looking at the entire Ratchet & Clank picture, it's easy to see how missed this franchise has been from the gaming industry. The combination of wondrous gadgets and galaxies with its unique narrative and engaging characters, Ratchet & Clank on the PS4 has been way overdue, and this initial installment on the platform is simply incredible. I highly recommend it to any longtime fan of the series as well as newcomers who have yet to experience the awesomeness that is Ratchet & Clank.

One thing I've learned here on GAF is to never take people's play times as gospel. I remember people swearing up and down that The Order took them 3 and half hours when it took me almost 8. The Last of Us could be cleared in 12 by some here when it took me close to 20 hours.

Point is everyone plays differently. It'll be different for a lot of folks.

Those never bothered me. Are they 30fps with the rest on the game? That would feel kind of weird.

So I'm not sure I've ever played a Ratchet and Clank game before. If I have it would've just been at a friend's place for a bit as I never had a Playstation growing up.

Reckon I'd enjoy this or would all the cameos/references get in the way?

funny no Gamespot or Polygon reviews are up yet, but Im not really interested on theirs anyway. Now only looking forward for Giant Bomb and Jimquistion ones

Giant Bomb doesn't review games anymore unfortunately.

Like where is Dark Souls 3?...

Yup. Its funny how many times they've tried it, and it never really felt right.

Visually though, its always been impressive.

It's a better starting point than most of the games. Should be fine since it's a retelling of the "origin" story.

IGN: "The 15-hour campaign follows some of the same whimsical, Star Wars-inspired storyline as the original game, but adds depth to characters while expanding the scope of the adventure."

It's funny how length only matters when the game is long

A quality ratchet game?! How is this shocking. This is one of the consistently great franchises in gaming. Never had a doubt.
One could argue the spin offs weren't all that good. (A4O and FFA) and the smaller titles (SM and QFB) weren't as good as the mainline ones.

Would I like this game if I enjoyed Sunset Overdrive? I never played a R&C game before.

Yes, definitely.

Nothing will get in your way, as this is basically the very first game, taken into a different direction. So you will be right there from the start :)

So true. Same here.

I am so excited for this game. I knew it was going to be good. Had that feeling. Insomniac knows their shit, and these types of games are sorely missed the past few years in a sea of Action/RPG, Shooters, Open World, etc..

Going to 'work from home' tomorrow, running to the store first thing in the morning to get the pre-order. Stoked!!!

Everyone buy this game! We need more of these games on PS4

gaming trend (75/100):

okay. i get how it could be the first 3, plus short. but how can it be beautiful, funny, fun and 'stale' at the same time?! :) ...

Holy crap how is 10-15 hours for a $40 game short?!?! Maybe I have a different perspective as I've gotten older and less free time, but god damn, not every game has to be RPG-like taking 50+ hours. Like damn, this game hits the sweet spot, if anything, longer than I had anticipated. Like seriously, I disagree!

Daaaaaamn. I paid off my pre-order in January so the reviews don't affect me but I'm really happy that it's doing so well.

Especially in a game like R&C where you can rush through the game or take your time, upgrade all your weapons to max and collect all the gold bolts.

Was expecting good things for this game, but man it's doing amazingly well. Congrats to the devs! Can't wait for my copy to arrive!

Too many great games right now.

I'll be holding off on this one for a bit, but I'm glad to see it doing well! As a first-time playstation owner (PS4), I'm glad to see games like this that I never had the opportunity to play.

But for now, Dark Souls 3 first...

the game feels a bit short.. when you compare it to the older Ratchet & Clank games.

This is from the lowest ranking review on metacritic

"While weapons are interesting and unique, they often come with the added weight of being hard to aim"

http://gamingtrend.com/reviews/2040-vision-ratchet-and-clank-review/

Hard to aim? What the? Even if you take assists off and play the game as a more traditional third person shooter, ratchet's weapons have always been super easy to use, the default settings however feature that lock-on targetting system where you can't miss provided your weapon is in range.

Maybe they played on the default auto-aiming system because in a way it is 'hard to aim' when a game is always doing all the work for you. Otherwise, I don't understand this criticism. I've played the game at various events and never did it feel 'hard to aim'.

Amaing scores!

The one thing that keeps repeating in each review is how amazing the game looks, reviewers are just floored by how good it looks, didn't read such enthusiasm over visuals in a long time, maybe since The Order and even than I'm not so sure critics were this excited about it visuals (maybe because the game was so bad it ruined it for them, or maybe because they felt the scope was too limited), I want to play it for the graphics alone.

Well done Insomniac
