Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

This is true but it's also in a closed ecosystem. You are looking at probably right around a 970 performance. Maybe slightly under

I doubt it. The PS4 has a 7850+, but given the same settings, how many games run about on par (or better) that than on, let's say, a 7950/R9 280?

The upgrade doesn't seem too great. Or worthwhile. As long as this is geared towards 4K and doesn't affect game quality on base units, I'll just pass.

However,

I don't like this one bit.
I don't see how double the GPU power at the same price isn't worthwhile. As one of many gamers unsatisfied with a number of PS4 titles performance this is great news.

Timing is everything. The earlier you bought the vanilla console, the less you probably mind the incremental update.

I do wonder though: how different would the gaming landscape look if we, as gamers, weren't so fixated on graphical bling?

I'm not sure why the lol. It's TFlops performance is indeed in line with a 970

That's just one factor, though. It's still much slower than a 970.

People forget that a lot of people getting good performance with a 970 on PC also have a CPU that makes what we have in PS4 and XB1 look more silly than they already do.

3570K's, 2500K's, 4670K's, 4690K's, a lot of the i7's. Like it or not, CPU plays a factor in gaming. Especially in games that are a little more open and less linear. While Uncharted 4 isn't an open world/sandbox game, I bet the fact that it's more open than other Uncharted games has forced ND to push that CPU to its limit.

why this frustrates me ..

as a console gamer (for a very long time) i'm accustomed to long hardware cycles. i understand that this means that what's on my console won't be cutting edge stuff graphically, it won't match what's on good PC's, but i don't really care. that has never bothered me. i think alot of console-focused gamers feel the same way.

now we're getting this iteration idea which seems like it'll have some upside. better graphics/performance more quickly. which is nice, but it isn't something i was exactly craving. i was fine with the way things were. it seems like i'm being offered something i didn't even want in the first place and being asked to pay a lot more money, more often, for it.

i'm sure it will be successful.

We are a visual species. That'll never change.

Alright, this thread is moving too fast to keep up. I could be on board with this.

Anyone think that all current PS4 games will be forward compatible?

I think if that were the case, it's a much more compelling argument to upgrade. Also, I think the "no exclusive for NEO" line is complete BS. Maybe for the first year, but they will phase out the PS4 eventually, especially when the "PS4 Trinity" or whatever the next upgrade is announced.

Anyone think this leak will slow the current gen PS4 sales a little? I see a few posts saying,"Welp, glad I didn't jump on the Base PS4. Will wait now". I'm sure this info will make it out to the mainstream sooner or later.

I've got to imagine Sony won't be too happy with this as they hope Uncharted 4 will drive a lot of HW sales. That number might not be as big as they thought now.

I don't believe we will see a significant impact on UC4 HW related sales because most people don't bother with rumors. Of course some people like us that use dedicated gaming forums/websites will probably wait to get a new console now, most of the market will only notice this after Sony officially announce this which will be as late as they can.

I seriously doubt Sony announces this at E3 if they are only launching in March 2017 like Leadbetter thinks they are. Doing that would have a massive implication in their holiday sales worldwide which would be stupid to say the least. My guess is that if the rumors are true (October games have to launch with NEO mode), then this is going to launch in November. It fits with an E3 announcement and at the same time announce that the PS4 Basic is dropped to 299 "starting right now". They lose some "insignificant" July, August, September and October sales but at least they keep the biggest sales months of November and December and maybe meanwhile some people will be happy chosing to be a basic owner and jump in at 299 (or take a page from MS marketing book and offer a limited 249 promotion until PS4Master is released, after that price jumps to 299).

If it is indeed a March release then I don't expect any official news before January.

If the first games with the NEO option start in October, then the PS4N will be released in September-October, isn't it?

September no way. It would be a complete disaster if they launch a new product and there are no games that actually support it and show the tangible difference they are trying to sell. If they demand October releases and beyond to start having a NEO mode than launch is October at the earliest.

The closed ecosystem hasn't given any benefit the ps4 so far. Why would it be different this time?

I mean ps4 equivalent AMD hardware still performs the same as the ps4.

Nah it won't slow anything down, most people won't hear about this thing till it's officially announced. People are overestimating the importance of this news.

3. Choice is never a bad thing.

This is such a tired cliché and is not a true statement.

If I take a service that costs 30$ and split it into two services, both of which still cost 30$, I've added choice. But it is absolutely a bad thing.

More relevant to this this case, I see this playing out one of two ways:

1) The PS4 becomes an afterthought, and this newfound choice is bad for all the people who don't want to upgrade/can't afford a PS4K, or
2) The PS4K is largely ignored, which makes it a bad choice for those who buy it but don't get much of anything out of their increased cost.

Believing that there is a middle ground where the PS4 gets all the attention it always has and the PS4K gets as much attention as it deserves strikes me as a naïve view of the world. One or the other will suffer. EDIT: In retrospect I guess there is an option 3. Both get half-assed, and the product is just inferior to what it could have been.

Looking for meaning in GAF
Makes it look like it can run things at 1080p native with maybe some power to spare, but that's totally not doing 4k native.

Am i the only one who thinks the whole story is very curious and strange? I mean it's rare that something from Sony has been leaked, and now we have 4-5 sites which are reporting about PS Neo..

I'm definitely holding off. I'll probably wait and see the Xbox upgrade. Likely get that before I get cheap ass original Ps4 in a couple years to play cheap exclusives. I'm super excited to be able to upgrade my Xbox where all my friends are instead of my PC that I rarely use.
